Training partnerships are all the rage in the racing industry these days but a mother and son joint venture is a rarity.

"Team Geran" broke with tradition three years ago when experienced Toowoomba trainer Kylie Geran began a partnership with her son, Corey.

The pair have since trained several winners in the metropolitan area while building their stable numbers up to 40 in work at Toowoomba.

The Gerans will head to Ipswich on Wednesday with three starters, but two – Torbreck and Dreamseeker – will clash in the Class 4 Handicap over 1520 metres.

Co-trainer Corey Geran has racing flowing through his veins as his father is the popular Darling Downs jockey Gary Geran, who still rides the provincial and country circuits in the state’s South East, and will partner Torbreck.

“I started training about three years ago after I worked as foreman for John Symons and Sheila Laxon at the Sunshine Coast,” the 26-year-old Corey said.

“I was living at the Sunny Coast for seven years while I went to university there and got my business degree.

“I’ve been brought up around horses all my life so it was only natural I’d end up training one day.

“The sky is the limit in this game if you’re prepared to work and try to improve every year."

Corey has been back training with his mother for the past 18 months at Toowoomba following his stint on the Sunshine Coast.

Taylor Marshall will ride Dreamseeker for the stable on Wednesday.

Of his two runners in the Class 4 race, he favours Torbreck as his best chance.

Torbreck had a win and two placings in three appearances before a last start sixth in a benchmark race at Roma on November 19.

“I’m pretty confident with Torbreck but Chris Munce’s runner Valley Of Dreams looks the one to beat,” he said.

“We took Torbreck to Roma last start but it was a very hot day and he didn’t handle the sand track.

“He’s back to a better track this time in a small field, so hopefully he’ll go forward and put the tempo on and will be hard to run down.”

As well as Torbreck, Geran also took Dreamseeker to Roma the same day and she was impressive scoring a runaway win over 1200 metres.

“She’s racing well but Torbreck is the better chance,” Geran said.

“She went to Roma and won very well last start and her form before was very good.

“We bought her online just to race around the non-TAB meetings but I didn’t like her initially.

“I wasn’t that keen about buying her but she’s now won three races and is going super.”
