Entries are now open for this year’s Ekka Sweepstakes, which will showcase greyhounds to the public during the Royal Queensland Show.

The sweepstakes are a chance for owners, breeders and handlers of pre-racing, racing and post-racing greyhounds to put their purebreds on display.

The winner of each category will receive between $200 to $500 with their blue ribbon, and exhibitors will again be paid a $100 appearance fee, an incentive that was introduced by Racing Queensland in 2022.

Judging will take place at 12pm on Sunday, August 13 in the Canine Pavilion, and the public is encouraged to walk through the pavilion to acquaint themselves with the greyhounds and their handlers.

Racing Queensland’s Senior Greyhound Racing Manager Brenton Scott said people would be able to pat and interact with the greyhounds on show.

“The greyhounds come from all stages of their careers, from puppy to retired veteran, showing their beautiful nature to the patrons of the Ekka,” Scott said.

“It’s a great chance for the public to interact with the animals as well as with the trainers who will be able to answer any questions.

“We are keen for people to see the gentle nature and suitability of the racing greyhound as a pet and a wonderful breed.

“Representatives from the Greyhound Adoption Program will also be on hand to handle any enquiries.”

There are six classes overall, with greyhounds divided by age and sex, with the winners of each class competing for the coveted Best of Breed.

The public will be able to get up close and personal with the greyhounds.

In 2022, Best in Show went to Squishy (race name Petite Fox), and Squishy’s proud owner Samantha Bloomfield said the Ekka Sweepstakes were back to their best after two Covid-interrupted years.

“The sweepstakes is a great opportunity to showcase our greyhounds to a big crowd,” Bloomfield said.

“It’s a great day out for people and the dogs love the attention.

“RQ’s support with the appearance fees and prizemoney has been fantastic.

“Last year’s event was the biggest numbers we’d had in a few years and was a great return to the Ekka.”

The winner of each class will receive $200, with cash prizes paid down to fifth place ($40).

There are four champion categories with a top prize of $500 for the winner of Best of Breed, $400 for Best Dog and Best Bitch and $300 for Best of Breed neutered.

Rounding out the awards, a trophy, ribbon, certificate and $50 prizemoney for best Junior Handler (under 18).

Entries close on Monday, July 3.
