GENERAL
 
Race 2: Stewards declared BLACK COUNTRY a late scratching at 7.55am. In considering the circumstances, Stewards accepted the explanation of J. JUDGE for the late scratching.
 
As jockey C. Eaton was indisposed, rider replacements were made as per the Stewards summary.
 
Stewards conducted an inspection of the track after a significant shower passed over the racecourse and subsequently downgraded the track to a Heavy 9 at 4.40pm.
 
 
Race 1: TTC MEMBER GARY GARLAND BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 1200M
 
BONCASSIE – Apprentice C Bellamy pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR131(b) in that she did fail to ride her mount out to the end of the race. In determining penalty, Stewards could not be definitively satisfied that Apprentice Bellamy’s riding had cost her mount second place, and in noting her record in relation to the rule, her guilty plea and forthright evidence, imposed a $500 fine.
 
DOCTOR TEEKAY – Tightened for room on jumping and had to be eased. Momentarily steadied off heels approaching the 900m. Near the 300m had to be steadied when crowded for room between ALFA LILY and SUBSTITUTION which was taken out by LATENIGHTTOUGHGUY, which shifted out to improve.
 
FIVE OXFORD – Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event. Apprentice S. Callow advised on returning to scale that she felt her mount may have gone amiss in running. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
 
LATENIGHTTOUGHGUY – Bumped on jumping. Was held up for clear running from the 500m until leaving the 400m. Jockey K. Yoshida was reprimanded under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m, which is 1 more than permitted.
 
OVERSEAS (NZ) – Bumped on jumping.
 
SUBSTITUTION – Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. Trainer M. Currie advised that connections would now consider the geldings immediate racing future with a mind to retirement.
 
 
ALFA LILY – Bumped on jumping. Raced wide and near the 600m was taken wider on the track when SPOOKEY SPIRIT shifted out to improve. Apprentice A. Donald reported her mount failed to handle todays track conditions.
 
LONDON POINT (NZ) – Began awkwardly and then bumped. Over raced near the 1000m. When asked to comment on the below market expectations, apprentice E. Lang advised that in her opinion the mare which was having its first start form a spell would derive a significant fitness benefit from the run.
 
 
Race 2: HARVEY NORMAN COMMERCIAL QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1100M
 
GALWAY HUSSLER – After beginning on terms form the wide barrier, was restrained in the early stages to obtain a position with cover near the inside running rail. Bumped passing the 500m. Bumped and became unbalanced rounding the home turn.
 
LETS DANCE JANDY – Raced wide for the majority of the event. Steadied near the 200m when momentarily tightened for room between BORN FEARLESS and NORTHERNONTAP which laid in under pressure.
 
NORTHERNONTAP – Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.
 
TRICKETEER – Bumped passing the 500m. Rounding the home turn bumped GALWAY HUSSLER.
 
VONCOSTENUFF – Bumped on jumping. Raced tight to the inside of LETS DANCE JANDY for some distance passing the 800m.  
 
ASGOODASYOUGETT – Near the 200m improved onto heels, was steadied and then shifted in and away from heels. Jockey N. Tomizawa was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out fully to the finish line.
 
DON'T CHA WISH – Raced ungenerously near the 900m for a short distance. Held up for clear running from the early stages of the home straight until approaching the 100m. Jockey K. Zechner reported that, in his opinion, his mount failed to handle today’s heavy track conditions.
 
BOAMBEE BEACH – Connections advised that it would be the intention to ride the filly forward from the favourable gate and obtain cover. Ridden forward and led from the 700m.
 
BOOM BOOM BELLA – Began awkwardly and then crowded for room. Jockey D Smith advised that, in his opinion, his mount failed to handle the heavy track conditions.
 
BORN FEARLESS – Held up for clear running for a short distance approaching the 300m.
 
 
Race 3: LASER CLINICS AUSTRALIA COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1000M
 
MASTER GEE – Shifted out on jumping and bumped. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have generalised muscle soreness.
 
GULF COUNTRY – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination due to not racing since September 2021 and was passed suitable to start. Slow into stride and then awkwardly placed on heels soon after the start.
 
BUCKALTIUS – Bumped on jumping and then crowded for room.
 
RECANATI – Bumped on jumping. Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.
 
NEARA REWARD – Apprentice jockey E. Lang reported at scales that the instructions were to ride forward, however the gelding lost its footing when jumping away and as a result was unable to muster speed to obtain a forward position, and as a result she decided to ease back and obtain cover. Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight.
 
SMILING ZAC (NZ) – Began very awkwardly and shifted in bumping BUCKALTIUS. Commenced to hang in approaching the 800m and was then momentarily steadied when SMILING ZAC improved quickly to the outside and shifted in. Raced three wide with cover for the majority of the event.  
 
MISHANI PERSUASION - Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination due to not racing since February 2023 and was passed suitable to start. Bumped soon after the start. When placed under pressure in the home straight laid in and proved difficult to ride out.
 
 
Race 4: GERRY BROWN'S TYRE ACCESSORIES FILLIES & MARES BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1000M
 
EMILEE'S EMPIRE – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped.
 
MONTANA LADY – Bumped on jumping and became awkwardly placed on heels soon after.
 
DREAM LANTERN – Laid in and away from another runner soon after the start. Laid in for the majority of the event. Improved on the heels and steadied approaching the 500m and then shifted wider rounding the home turn. Hung in under pressure in the home straight, proving very difficult to ride out and consequently went to the line without being fully tested. Trainer L. Hatch was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of the filly. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. Lost the near hind plate in running. L. Hatch was reprimanded for initially removing DREAM LANTERN from the track prior to the permitted time.
 
ARDERN – Bumped on jumping, became unbalanced and shifted in making contact with MONTANA LADY. Passing the 900m had to be steadied from the heels of EMILEE’S EMPIRE which shifted in when not fully clear. Apprentice Y. Lewis the rider of EMILEE’S EMPIRE was reprimanded for careless riding. Raced wide without cover in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be exhibiting heat stress.
 
GRANDEUR ROSE – Blundered on jumping. Momentarily held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight
 
 
Race 5: 1EQUINE - FOR THE EQUINE ATHLETE MAIDEN PLATE 1000M
 
TIME FOR JACK – Bumped on jumping. Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event. Bumped near the 200m.
 
ATLANTIC LACE – Shifted in away from another runner soon after the start and then eased when momentarily awkwardly placed on heels.
 
MAIL LADY – Slow to begin.
 
STELLER EAGLE – Bumped on jumping and shifted in. Jockey G. Cartwright stated that her mount travelled reasonably in the going but when asked for an effort in the straight failed to respond and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
 
THE WHITE MOUSE – Jockey W. O’Connell was fined $300 under the provisions of AR132(5) for using his whip on 15 occasions in totality, which is 1 more than permitted.
 
TIME TO LAUNCH – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
JAMAICAN MECRAZY – Leaving the 800m was crowded for room, steadied and lost ground. Whilst Stewards aknowledged that JAMAICAN MECRAZY was racing neat to the inside of THE WHITE MOUSE (W. O’Connell), which was racing to the inside of TIME TO LAUNCH (K. Yoshida), which was improving to the outside and shifting ground, Stewards could not comfortably apportion blame to any one rider, they nonetheless advised both W. O’Connell and K. Yoshida to exercise caution in similar circumstances. Momentarily held up for clear running near the 400m. Shifted wider upon entering the home straight to obtain clear running and bumped with another runner near the 200m.
 
UCHI – As Jockey K. Matheson was to be overweight, he was replaced by Apprentice E. Lang when there was no other senior jockey available. K. Matheson was fined $200 under the provisions of AR190(3).
 
FLYING TO MARS – Slow to begin. Near the 700m was bumped by TIME FOR JACK and forced wider on the track. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
 
Race 6: TRACKSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1300M
 
TAKE A PICTURE – Bumped on jumping. Raced wide in the early stages. Jockey N. Fazackerley reported at scale that his instructions were to ride in a forward position, however after only beginning fairly he was unable to obtain a forward position and elected to ease back and obtain cover in preference to racing wide. He added that the gelding was not comfortable on today’s track conditions.
 
PICADOR – Slow to begin and lost ground. Trainer J. Dann was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding’s barrier manners. Laid in under pressure down the running and bumped the inside running rail near the 100m.
 
CLEAR BLONDE – Improved onto heels of the tiring GLENGARRY approaching the 400m and had to be restrained.
 
NEWMARKET MISS – Bumped on jumping. Leaving the 500m was steadied when awkwardly placed on the heels of GLENGARRY which was weakening. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
GLENGARRY – Commenced to tire notably from the 500m, consequently was not put under any pressure in the home straight and finished tailed off. Apprentice A. Donald reported at scale that the gelding did not handle today’s track conditions. Trainer G. Hay reported that that GLENGARRY had pulled up well following the run and felt the heavy track had a detrimental effect on the performance. He added that he would refrain from racing the gelding on heavy tracks in the future.
 
 
Race 7: HAYNES - THINK PEOPLE THINK HAYNES MAIDEN PLATE 1920M
 
A DEVIL'S CHANCE – Slow to begin.
 
ITALIAN VIRTUOSO – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after racing at Ipswich on 1st April 2024 and was passed suitable to race.
 
LICENCE TO THRILL – Near the 1700m was steadied and tightened for room when PRIDE AN’ JOY shifted in when not fully clear. Jockey K. Matheson, the rider of PRIDE AN’ JOY was reprimanded for careless riding. Shifted wider on entering the back straight and permitted to stride forward and obtain a position three wide near the 900m at which time the gelding commenced to yield ground and finished significantly tailed off. When asked to comment, jockey N. Tomizawa stated his instructions were allow his mount to stride forward at any stage if the gelding commenced to race keenly. He added that when the pace of the race began to ease near the 1200m, he shifted out approaching the 1000m, however when LICENCE TO THRILL obtained a position outside the leaders near the 900m, his mount began to weaken from that point. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery. Trainer S. Sixtus confirmed the instructions issued and was advised that in consideration of the performance, the nomination of the gelding to race at Provincial Tab meeting would be refused until such time the gelding establishes improved form.
 
WHYTEEPEE – Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 1700m. Raced keenly near the 1600m and again raced keenly down the back straight until near the 1000m. Laid in over the final 200m and proved difficult to ride out over the concluding stages.
 
PRIDE AN' JOY – Raced keenly near the 1600m.
