When questioned as to the tactics adopted, Jockey A Allen stated that from the wide barrier he was obliged to pressure the gelding in the early stages to obtain a forward position. Once he obtained a position outside of SMASHED IT, Jockey Allen attempted to restrain the gelding at which point it continued to race strongly despite his efforts resulting in him having to obtain another hold on his reins leaving the 700m. Jockey Allen stated that his intention during the middle stages was to sit back off SMASHED IT, however, the gelding refused to settle. Stewards accepted the explanation.

Jockey D. Browne reported that after travelling well throughout the event, the horse blundered near the 450m and was immediately under pressure and weakened in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Stewards questioned trainer L. White who was of the view that the poor performance could be attributed to the rain-affected track. Miss White was advised that stewards would follow up with her in the coming days as to the horse’s recovery.

Lloyd advised that his mount never travelled in the early stages and had to work hard to reach a position outside the leader at the 800m. He said the horse was under pressure passing the 600m and soon after, on straightening, shifted out when weakening. The explanation was noted. A post-race veterinary examination revealed abrasions to the offside stifle. A swab sample was taken.
