Jockey Robertson advised that he was issued no specific instructions by connections, however prior to the event he had formed the view that SHADYVALE STORM was the only speed in the event and therefore he elected to ride APATAKI along in the early stages with the view of possibly settling in a more forward position. When questioned rider explained that after hanging out severely in the early stages of the event his mount had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure and approaching the winning post, he lacked confidence in the racing manners of his mount as such he was reluctant to place his mount under full pressure over the final strides. A post-race vet exam of the gelding revealed no abnormalities. Trainer was advised the gelding must trial again prior to racing.
