Stewards sought an explanation from R. Stewart regarding him not riding his mount out in the home straight in his normal manner. R. Stewart explained that his mount was under heavy pressure prior to the home turn and did not handle the rain-affected track. He added that when KEREMA MORI weakened noticeably over the final stages, he began riding with some vigour after becoming aware that an opportunity existed to run 4th. Stewards cautioned R. Stewart and reminded him of his obligations to at all times test his mounts to the end of the race.

A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer A. Williamson was advised that the horse would now be sent for a spell. Connections were advised that the horse must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

Had to work hard in the early stages to the outside of EXCEED ALL ODDS and when J. Byrne attempted to restrain the horse it commenced to overrace and he was unable to take a sit at the girth of EXCEED ALL ODDS. J. Byrne was questioned regarding the horse’s disappointing performance. Refer Stewards Report. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an abnormal upper respiratory noise. The horse will require a veterinary clearance, together with the results of an endoscopic examination, before it races again.

Pengelly stated that the gelding travelled well, however, in his opinion, was left flatfooted approaching the 400m when the pace quickened. He added the slow tempo in the early stages may have been detrimental to its chances. Jockey Pengelly further stated the gelding finished the race off well, and, in his opinion, may be better suited at distances further than that of today’s event.
