When questioned re leading, rdr explained that he was instructed to ride the gelding forward if it began well. He added that after beginning fairly, he rode his mount along to obtain a prominent position and after being caught very wide in the early stages he continued to pressure the gelding where it was able to obtain the lead near the 1200m. He further added that near the 1100m, his mount commenced to race keenly and refused to settle, resulting in the gelding setting fast sectionals and was left without a finishing effort.

Rdr explained issued no specific instructs, adding that leaving 600m was reluctant to shift wider round home turn, and with the placement of the rail at 12m, was of the view gelding would be better served remaining closer to the rail and save ground at that point of the race. Rdr agreed in hindsight, it would have been a better option to follow eventual winner into race leaving 600m rather than wait until the 400m to allow his mount to improve into the race.
