Course Information

The Certificate II in Racing Industry is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to pursue a career in various sectors of the racing industry. Whether you aim to work with thoroughbred horses or standardbred horses, this course equips you with essential competencies and insights into the industry's operations.

 

Work Placement

A significant component of this course involves hands-on work experience in a racing stable or stud farm. Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting under the supervision of experienced industry professionals.

Entry Requirements

This qualification does not have any specific entry requirements within the Industry Training Package. Training and assessment involves moderate to high physical activity. In light of this, RQ mandates that individuals undertaking this course must:

  • Attend and be active in scheduled training and assessments, both on and off-the-job.
  • Complete workplace tasks in accordance with employer expectations.
  • Ability to operate in the racing industry environment and handle standard industry equipment.
  • Possess adequate language, literacy, and numeracy skills to comprehend learning materials and carry out routine work tasks effectively within their role.

Please note: RQ will communicate with individuals who express interest in enrolling to assess their language, literacy, and numeracy skills. The RQ team is equipped to offer supplementary learning support to learners in need of basic assistance. For those requiring more extensive support, RQ can facilitate referrals to specialized language, literacy, and numeracy development providers. These providers can aid learners in enhancing their language, literacy, and numeracy skills to ensure their readiness to begin the course effectively.

 

Details and Unit

To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in 14 units of competency: 4 core units plus 10 elective units.

Core Units

  • ACMGAS202 - Participate in workplace communications
  • BSBWHS211 - Contribute to the health and safety of self and others
  • RGRCMN201 - Investigate job opportunities in racing and related industries
  • RGRCMN203 - Comply with racing industry ethics and integrity

Electives

  • ACMEQU205 - Apply knowledge of horse behaviour
  • ACMEQU202* - Handle horses safely
  • RGRPSH201 - Handle racehorses in stables and at trackwork
  • RGRPSH202* - Assist with transportation of horses
  • RGRPSH207* - Perform racing stable duties
  • ACMEQU208 - Manage personal health and fitness for working with horses
  • ACMEQU209* - Provide non-riding exercise to horses
  • RGRPSH211 - Work effectively in the horse racing industry
  • RGRPSH309 - Implement feeding programs for racehorses under direction

Choose 1 of the following non-riding and riding electives:

  • RGRPSH308 - Provide first aid and emergency care for horses or other equines
  • RGRPSH205* - Perform basic riding skills in the racing industry

 

Career Pathways and Outcomes

Certificate II graduates may find employment as stablehands or grooms in racing stables, equestrian centres, or stud farms; track riders, responsible for exercising and training horses on the racetrack; strappers, assisting in the preparation and care of racehorses before and after races; grounds maintenance workers, maintaining racetrack facilities; stud hands, assisting with the breeding and care of thoroughbred horses; or racing administration assistants, performing administrative tasks within racing clubs and organizations. Graduates may also choose to pursue further education and training within the racing industry.

 

Fees

Traineeship Eligibility: You must already be employed to enrol as a trainee with Racing Queensland. Speak to your employer about choosing Racing Queensland as your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).

Cost: Eligible apprentices and trainees that meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a set fee per nominal hour. These fees are calculated at a regulated rate.

Concession rates apply for students who hold a current Health Care Card or who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Non-funded trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. These will be confirmed prior to the commencement of training.

Information regarding costs will be outlined on the agreed training plan which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee at the time of induction.
