THE HAYDEN TO RAISE THE BAR AGAIN IN 2025
The harness code’s innovative slot race The Hayden will return in 2025. Named after Queensland cricket legend Matthew Hayden, the race pays tribute to a Queensland icon known for his grit, determination, and maroon pride. Exclusively for three and four-year-old QBRED horses, The Hayden will again be run over 2138 metres at Albion Park on Saturday, June 21.
It will again act as Racing Queensland’s qualifying race to determine its slot holder into the third running of the world’s richest harness race, the $2.1 million The TAB Eureka at Club Menangle.
After the success of the inaugural running in 2023, last year’s iteration continued to raise the bar with another quality field of QBRED pacers assembled to compete for over $200,000 in stakes. In what proved to be a thrilling finish, Free Thinker was too strong, going on to represent Queensland in The TAB Eureka.
This year’s edition will continue the successful format, with slots auctioned at the Sunshine Stars Yearling Sale. Slot holders will select an eligible QBRED horse to compete, with the winner earning the honour of representing Queensland in the 2025 TAB Eureka.
Beyond the track, The Hayden plays a crucial role in supporting Indigenous education through its partnership with Shoreline. Founded on the Tiwi Islands, more than 500 students have participated in Shoreline programs over the past decade, igniting and inspiring positive change and self-determination for young Indigenous Australians.
The Hayden is more than a race – it’s a celebration of Queensland
pride and excellence on the national stage.
