LIVE COVERAGE: Caloundra Cup Day

It's the final day of the 2019 TAB Queensland Winter Racing Carnival and what better way to round it out than at the picturesque Sunshine Coast Turf Club. 

The meeting features the Listed Caloundra Cup, Listed Glasshouse Handicap and Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas. 

Held over a mile for three-year-olds, the Guineas has become an important guide to finding future Group 1 winners.

The Bostonian (2018), Tivaci (2016) and, of course, Winx (2015) all went on to enjoy varying degrees of Group 1 success after saluting in the Guineas.

“Michael Cahill said he should have run last the amount of work he did last start, Glen (Boss) gave him the right run today and we saw what he’s capable of.”

“I brought him here on Wednesday and worked him with Rockbeat and beat him comfortably, he’s always worked with good horses.”

“A couple of his placings have been behind possibly the best two-year-old colt and filly in Queensland, in Garibaldi and Gem of Scotland he just had to handle the wet and he did.”

“We travelled comfortably behind a nice tempo, we got to the front pretty early, but he was still working strong through the line.”

“It’s a genuine Heavy 10 out there, it’ll be tough going if it chops up.”

“He just loves it here, I was a little but worried on the turn when they kicked up inside him, but Luke (Tarrant) knows him well and when he gave him a little squeeze away he went.”

“I think the big key for him is getting balanced, around the tight turning tracks he tends to lose a bit of momentum, but he just sweeps around the corner here and I hope he’ll be able to do it around Eagle Farm as well.”

“The plan was to get on the crown, I said I’d rather give away a bit of ground around the turn than give away the top.”

“We wanted it to keep raining throughout the week and to stop today so she could go around on the heavy.”

“We wanted to lead last start at Ipswich and when he gave that up it was race over.”

“It wasn’t wet at Ipswich like this and she was backing up on consecutive weekends, where she got a week off for today where there was a lot more in her favour.”

“Honestly on a track like today’s if you’re travelling just let them run, if you try to put them on the bridal there’s not much benefit to it.”

“You can look at her wet track credentials all you like, but it’s tough to do the form for a track like that it’s a genuine heavy.”

“He was pretty impressive at Ipswich the other day, he only got out late and rattled home, so Jimmy (Byrne) was pretty keen to get on him again.”

“We’ll just keep trying to pick suitable races for him, I’m rapt for the owners they are a bunch of first timers from Hervey Bay and he’s got them six wins now.”

“Obviously I train here at the track and to win a city race on our biggest day of the year is just great.”

“It wasn’t his fault (he went through the barriers), sometimes they just don’t press the button at the right time.”

“He get’s through the going fine and was pretty unlucky at Ipswich the other day where the track wasn’t suited to him.”

“I’ll tell you what I’ve had better horses, but she’s as tough as any, she’s been in work since November and tops it off with a Group Three at home on a heavy ten.”

“At the five hundred I thought she can’t win hopefully she can run third and pull up alrigh.”

“Last Sunday I told the owners she’s going straight to the paddock, but I got there Monday and she said to me I’m not done with yet let’s go again.”

“She’s had such a huge preparation won a Group race, won a listed race, second in a couple of Group races, couldn’t have asked anymore from her, I’m getting emotional.”

“It was testing she had a hard run, but she just kept coming her four from four at the track is now a perfect five.”

“I was pretty confident throughout, it’s all about rhythm and that’s why I chose to stay three wide no cover and she got through the track a treat.”

“When won well today, she enjoys the ground that’s made the world of difference.”

“Robbie (Fradd) rode her brilliantly and I was very confident when he peeled out in the straight.”

“This race wasn’t his main target the Brisbane Cup was, but things didn’t quite go to plan, she tried hard, but the tracks were a bit firm for her.”

“We’ll take her down to Grafton next, it’s very wet and cold at home so we’re enjoying every minute with her over the ditch.”

“She’s going to stud in New South Wales later this year, so we’ve got a decision to make where we take her.”

“I think I was on the right filly, being German bred she flourished on this kind of track, carrying 54 kilos she gets through it no trouble, she was doing her best work at the end.”

“I hit a few of those bad patches in the run, but she just kept travelling the whole way, a big thankyou to Robert Priscott.”
