Adrian Coome has come a long way in his short training career and is hopeful of continuing his recent winning run at Rockhampton on Tuesday.
Coome trained a double at Rockhampton last Wednesday when Poetic Pete and Howick both saluted at Callaghan Park.
Coome has a team of seven runners engaged for tomorrow’s Callaghan Park meeting spearheaded by Poetic Heart in the Open Handicap (1300m).
Poetic Heart drew the rails and is coming off a last start fourth to Mamselle Corday in a 1300-metre Open at Callaghan Park on January 8.
“It was only his second run from a break and he died on his run a bit and will strip a lot fitter this time,” Coome said.
“Barrier one is not really to his advantage as he dislikes being on inside of horses.
“I also had him in the Class Six Plate but he had a lot of weight and he’s not a big horse so I preferred the Open with him.”
Coome has made a good fist of training since he started in October, 2018 and hopes to follow close friend Tom Button to the Sunshine Coast in the future.
“I’ve got a great bunch of owners and have 27 in work and there’s more to come in soon,” Coome said.
“I’m really happy with the way things are progressing.
“I want to build on what I’ve done so far and eventually I’d like to move to either Brisbane or Caloundra but it’s a bit hard to get into Eagle Farm at the moment.”
Coome retired from riding in 2018 following a long battle with weight problems.
In his riding days, Coome rode 975 winners and was the State’s leading rider three times, winning seven Rockhampton jockeys’ premierships and two in Mackay.
Among his list of achievements was winning the Rockhampton Cup three times as well as three Rockhampton Newmarkets and three Townsville Cups.
Coome plans to target the Rockhampton Cup again this year with Poetic Heart.
“I won the Cup three times as a rider and Poetic Heart ran fifth after coming from last in it last year,” he said.
“I think he’ll be hard to beat tomorrow and he’ll probably only have a couple more runs before he goes out for break to prepare for the Rockhampton Cup again,” he said.
