The Queensland greyhound racing industry is saddened to learn of John Edwards’ passing at the age of 80.
Edwards was a dominant force in the greyhound industry, training a number of Group winners in the Sunshine State.
A native Victorian, John and his wife Lillian moved to Queensland in the mid-80s shortly after their star dog Tears Laddie had made the Sandown Cup final.
They bred and raced a number of progeny from Tears Laddie, including Queensland Derby winner Makaboy and Ipswich Gold Cup champion Ellie’s Diamond.
Today, a number of the country’s best stayers in Tornado Tears and Here’s Tears have Tears Laddie as their seventh dam.
The final dog that John bred, appropriately named John’s Last, still races today for Glass House Mountains trainer Robert Ayres.
In what can only be described as a fitting send-off for his late breeder, John’s Last saluted this afternoon in the fifth event at the Bundaberg Greyhound Racing Club.
“John was a truly outstanding greyhound trainer, one who dominated the Queensland scene for a number of years,” Racing Queensland COO Adam Wallish said.
“As a breeder, we still see his progeny prominent to this day, where a number of stars can be traced back to his star Tears Laddie.
“Racing Queensland extends its sincere condolences to the Edwards family.”
