The Queensland racing industry is mourning the sudden loss of Cairns Amateurs President Ross Moller.
A popular and widely respected figure in Far North Queensland, Mr Moller, 66, passed away at the weekend, with tributes rolling in for the community leader.
Racing Queensland Deputy Chair Sharon Dawson was among those who said he would be sorely missed.
“Ross has left such an indelible imprint on the city of Cairns and the Far North,” Ms Dawson said.
“Not just from a racing perspective, but more broadly.
“There was barely a person that he didn’t know and there was no task that was too big or too small for him to tackle through his time at the Amateurs.
“He will be sorely missed and we pass on our condolences to his wife, Despina, and the entire Moller family.”
In addition to his role with the Amateurs, Mr Moller was embedded in the FNQ community as a respected realtor and as a Board member with the Cairns Taipans.
Former Amateurs President Michael Delaney told News Corp he had been on the organisation’s committee with Mr Moller for 20 years.
“He would basically take a whole week off work to help set up the racecourse,” Mr Delaney said.
“He was really hands on, putting the tables and chairs out himself, just a great contributor.
“I couldn’t believe it when I heard. I’m still in a bit of shock about the whole thing.”
RQ extends its condolences to the Moller family.
