One of the most interesting newcomers to the Queensland breeding scene this season is the former top New Zealand pacer Cullen’s Creek, who will be standing at WW Racing Stables, Elimbah, of Wayne Waltisbuhl.
He will stand for the modest fee of $800 with a live foal guarantee.
Cullen’s Creek was a top racehorse himself, winning more than $140,000, and he set a track record winning the Group 3 Hannon Memorial (2600 metres) at Oamaru, beating a top field including the A. G. Hunter Cup winner Bondy and the Fremantle Cup winner Power Of Tara.
Among his other 13 successes were the Group 3 Central Otago Cup in New Zealand, two at Albion Park, one at Menangle and two at Newcastle where he took his record of 1:56.9 over 2030 metres.
Cullen’s Creek is a son of former champion Christian Cullen ($1.2 million in prizemoney), one of the greatest of a string of champions left by the champion American sire In The Pocket.
Sons of Christian Cullen are now coming to the forefront as sires in both NZ and Australia.
Cullen’s Creek belongs to a noted female line, his dam Kahu Del being by Armbro Del, a leading NZ sire and broodmare sire from Tee Kahu (dam of 4 winners), by Tuft from Kahu (dam of 6 winners), by the NZ Derby winner Fallacy.
Kahu Del, the dam of Cullen’s Creek, has proved a prolific broodmare.
She is also the dam of the multiple Group winner Harnett’s Creek, the Geraldine Cup winner Swan Creek, Kahlum (dam of the trotting standout Lyell Creek) and Christian Creek, dam of recent WA Group winner Wainui Creek.
Cullen’s Creek has left winners from his first small NSW crop.
“We already 25 firm bookings for him this season,” Wayne said.
