Gold Coast trainer Bryan Guy has stunned the racing industry with his shock decision to retire, and hopes to bow out with a winner in his final week of training.
Guy, who turns 67 in May, has sold his stables near the Gold Coast Turf Club and will saddle up his last runner on his home track on Saturday after a career spanning 40 years.
Guy will also have three starters at Ipswich on Wednesday including Rebel Salute and Brook Hill - who clash in the Class 5 Handicap over 1350 metres - while he has nominated eight horses for his final meeting at the Gold Coast.
“It’s something that I’ve been thinking of doing for a long time,” Guy told Racing Queensland.
“I’ve decided now is the right time to sit back and to start enjoying life a bit more.
“I’ve sold my Gold Coast stables but I’ll still live on the Gold Coast.
“My first runner as a trainer was a winner at Rosehill, so hopefully I can finish up with a win on my final day on my home track on Saturday."
Guy rates Rebel Salute in the Class 5 Handicap as the pick of his Ipswich team.
Rebel Salute has won four of his 17 starts and is coming off a last start sixth in an 1110-metre Class 6 at Doomben on January 15.
Rebel Salute is part-owned by Guy’s son Daniel who has been involved in a training partnership with his father for the past six years.
