Third time lucky for Master Jamie on his home track

Trainer Graeme Green is hopeful it’ll be third time lucky when his star sprinter Master Jamie attempts another weight carrying record at Rockhampton on Tuesday.

Master Jamie was allotted 67.5kgs – the biggest weight he has received in his 47 start career - at his past two starts and has received the same weight for the third consecutive time in the Open Handicap over 1400 metres.

On both occasions, Master Jamie’s weight was reduced two kilos to 65.5kgs with the claim for Brisbane apprentice Melea Castle and she will again partner the six-year-old in his fifth start this campaign.

Master Jamie was beaten by the former Kelly Schweida-trained Montenegro Man, who made his debut for Rockhampton trainer Jamie McConachy, in an Open Handicap over 1400 metres at Callaghan Park last month.

“I thought he’d get one kilogram less as he’s been beaten at his past two starts when he got 67.5kgs,” Green said.

“He’s going great this campaign and he’ll have this run before heading back to Brisbane next start.”

Master Jamie is being aimed at the $150,000 The Gold Jewel over 1350 metres at Doomben on March 18.

“He ran second in the Gold Jewel last year with 59kgs behind Michael Costa’s Derulo who we had to give away five kilos and he only got beaten one length,” Green said.

“The weight got him in the end that day, the same as it has his last two starts at Rocky.”

Green has an unexpected damages bill to pay, courtesy of Master Jamie lashing out at a car owned by a staff member last Friday.

“I brought him back from the swimming pool and he was bucking and playing about,” Green said.

“He kicked a car door in which belonged to one of my staff.

“The owner said the car was only a bush basher, but I’ll have to pay the damages bill.”

Green is only planning one assault in Brisbane on The Gold Jewel before Master Jamie heads back home for the feature racing through Central and North Queensland during the winter. 

“He’ll only have one run in Brisbane before he comes back for the winter races here,” he said.

“The races he’ll be set for are all quality races with a maximum top weight of 61kgs.

“He’s as sound as a bell and is the highest money earning horse ever to be trained solo out of Rockhampton.

“There’s other horses who have won more like Our Boy Malachi, but John Hawkes had him in Sydney after he left here.”
