Racing Queensland has adopted a suite of changes to the Greyhound Rules of Racing, which are due to take effect in the coming months.

The changes to the Local Rules, which will take effect from September 1, 2024, include:

  • New Local Rule 11A: Rehoming of a greyhound;
  • New Local Rule 11B: Euthanasia of a greyhound; and
  • New Local Rule 11C: Abandonment of a greyhound.

The new Local Rules clarify the responsibilities of owners and other persons to rehome a greyhound after racing, outline the limited circumstances in which euthanasia of a greyhound is permitted in the Queensland greyhound racing industry, and specify the circumstances in which the controlling body may deem a greyhound to have been abandoned by its owner.

The changes to the Greyhounds Australasia Rules, which will take effect from November 1, 2024, include:

  • Amended Greyhounds Australasia Rule 32: Appointment and duties of marking and microchipping officials; and
  • Amended Greyhounds Australasia Rule 33: Greyhound to be microchipped.

The amended Greyhounds Australasia Rules mean the requirement to ear tattoo greyhounds will cease from that date.
