She might be tiny but Mimmy’s Secret is fast earning a reputation as Central Queensland’s “mighty midget” ahead of her bid for a fourth straight win at Rockhampton on Tuesday.
Mimmy’s Secret has won her past three starts in Townsville and is aiming for a 50 per cent winning strike-rate when she returns to her home track at Callaghan Park for the QTIS Three-Years-Old Handicap over 1050 metres.
Rockhampton trainer Kevin Miller has been careful placing the daughter of Encryption as he’s been reluctant to push the filly too hard due to her light frame.
“She’s going great but I’ve had to be careful placing her as she’s a December foal and she’s barely 15 hands,” Miller said.
“The good thing with her is she’s getting more seasoned with every run.”
Mimmy’s Secret was a cheap $8,000 buy at the Capricornia Yearling Sale in Rockhampton and has been great for her owners which includes Miller’s long-term client, Bob Symons.
She’s already returned more than 10 times her purchase price with $83,000 in prizemoney.
“I went to the sales and Bob asked me to ring him as soon as she came into the ring to be sold,” Miller said.
“She was very small but Bob said buy her as there was something he just liked about her. I had her legs x-rayed and they came back good so I took her home.
“She’s been a darling to train and everyone who rides her has said she’s lovely and quiet.”
Mimmy’s Secret - an Adam Sewell mount - is coming off a dominant all-the-way win over the Georgie Holt-trained Margot Barbie in a similar three-year-old race at Cluden Park on February 13.
Despite her decisive victory last start, Miller believes her best performance was winning her maiden at Townsville in the middle of December.
“She normally races on the speed but that day in Townsville she got well back in the field and came from third last which I rate as her best win so far,” Miller said.
Miller’s best win in his 12-year training career was with Isis Carmella in the Cleveland Bay Handicap in Townsville in 2023.
He would love to think Mimmy’s Secret would one day replicate that win but is in no rush.
“She’s paid up for the big Capricornia Yearling Sale race but we’ll take our time and go race by race and see where she ends up,” Miller said.
“She’ll go for a short break soon and we’ll aim her for more QTIS races.
“I don’t think she’s up to a Brisbane trip just yet as she needs to improve more. For the time being we’ll just take small steps with her.”
