Race 1: WESTERN PRODUCE & RURAL SUPPLIES MDN PLT – 1100M
 
Correct weight was declared to allow the rider of 2nd placegetter J Babarovich (PORTABELLE) to view the photo finish. After viewing the photo finish, J Babarovich declined to make any objection and correct weight was declared.
 
HONEY BIRD – Approaching the 900m, had to be steadied when SUPER SID overraced and laid in under pressure.
 
SUPER SID – Approaching the 900m, was placed in restricted room and had to be checked off the heels of JAGRAP when the pace steadied. T Townsend, rider of JAGRAP, was reminded of her obligations in regards to excessively slowing the pace.
 
JAGRAP – When questioned regarding the improved performance, apprentice T Townsend said her instructions were to have the horse where comfortable and after beginning well, elected to be more positive on the mare. She added that the mare was very one paced and had to be hard ridden for the majority of the event. Trainer P O’Toole agreed with apprentice Townsend and added that JAGRAP had only recently returned from a long spell of racing and had only had two starts this preparation, with her last race being on the dirt at Longreach which the mare didn’t handle. He further added that reverting back to a grass surface today was key and he was confident of an improved showing. After returning to enclosure, it was apparent that JAGRAP had been galloped on during the event with a post race veterinary examination revealing the mare to be lame in the near hind. Trainer P O’Toole advised stewards JAGRAP would be sent for an immediate extended spell. He was nonetheless advised a veterinary certificate would be required prior to the mare racing again.
 
SASSY STYLE – Jumped awkwardly.
 
WEAGLES – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after competing at Rockhampton on the 7th July and passed fit to start. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, apprentice E Bell stated after being slow to begin, she elected to take up a position at the back of the field rather than press forward where she would be caught wide. She added that WEAGLES travelled well throughout but when placed under pressure at the early part of the straight, didn’t show the expected response and only went to the line fairly. She added that the quick back up from Tuesday might have been a factor in the disappointing performance, but WEAGLES would still take improvement from the run. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
PORTABELLE – Jumped awkwardly. Travelled wide throughout.
 
Race 2: P ANDERSON & S HARRIS BM 55HCP – 1300M
 
AMADEO – Contacted on jumping.
 
LONG STORY SHORT – Jumped awkwardly and bumped with AMADEO and MS WICKED NIKKI shortly after the start.
 
BARBERANCE – Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
 
HUSSON’S SHOUT – Jumped awkwardly.
 
MS WICKED NICCI – Raced in restricted room shortly after jumping and made contact with LONG STORY SHORT and NO MORE BIDS for several strides. Travelled wide throughout.
 
MISS SIZZ – Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
 
NO MORE BIDS – Bumped shortly after jumping. Jockey C Rogers was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that she used her whip 8 times prior to the 100m and 11 in total. In assessing penalty, stewards took into consideration jockey Rogers’ exemplary record.
 
YOU’RE NOT WANTED – Rider D Rewald pleaded guilty to a charge under AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip 8 times prior to the 100m and 16 in total and was subsequently fined $100. When assessing penalty, stewards took into consideration jockey Rewalds’ exemplary record.
 
Race 3: PEOPLES BOOKMAKER BM50 HCP – 1100M
 
ANGELS OF FENWAY – Jumped awkwardly and shifted in. When questioned regarding ANGELS OF FENWAY leading by a significant margin throughout the race, apprentice T Townsend stated that her intentions were to lead and after beginning well, was allowed to do this with relative ease. She added that although she was aware of the gap she had placed on the rest of the field from the vicinity of the 700m onwards, she felt that when trying to restrain, her mount resented her actions and therefore allowed ANGELS OF FENWAY to stride forward. She further added that she was pleased with the finishing effort of the gelding. Stewards advised T Townsend that although ANGELS OF FENWAY fought on well to only be marginally beaten into third, they would expect apprentice Townsend to show a greater effort when attempting to restrain her mounts so they have a greater finishing effort.
 
DUCK IN DUBAI – Travelled wide throughout.
 
CHEEKY CHOPS – Stewards opened an inquiry into jockey Rudd’s riding, particularly over the final 800m after CHEEKY CHOPS received interference. After taking initial evidence from jockey Rudd and Trainer R Little, the matter was adjourned to allow stewards to view the previous starts and also examine betting records of the race. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
FOR THE RECORDS – Travelled wide throughout.
 
GREY FALCON – Slow to begin.
 
SURPRISE SELECTION – Bumped on jumping with FLOSS’S DREAM
 
FLOSS’S DREAM – Bumped on jumping with SURPRISE SELECTION.
 
SIXES – Fractious in the barriers, rearing on a number of occasions and as a result was slow to begin. Hung out under pressure over the concluding stages. Trainer T Austin was advised a warning would be placed on the record of SIXES, who has only recently joined the stable, in relation to its barrier manners.
 
 
Race 4: O’DONNELL’S FRIENDLY GROCER BM50 HCP – 1100M

Correct weight was delayed to allow rider of 3rd placegetter, Emma Bell (WHISKEY APPLE) to view the photo finish. After viewing the photo, she declined to make any objection and correct weight was declared.
 
SPARMAN – Slow to begin.
 
HARD ENOUGH – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, jockey/trainer C Rogers reported that the gelding may not have handled the 63kg as well as the wide barrier. She added that she felt HARD ENOUGH didn’t appreciate the pace of the race and although the horse felt comfortable throughout the event, it was a beaten horse when asked for an effort.  A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Jockey/trainer C Rogers would undertake to report back to the stewards of the condition of the gelding in the days subsequent.
 
METTRE LE FLEU – Shifted in on jumping. Laid in over the concluding stages.
 
IN TOO DEEP – A post race veterinary examination of the gelding, which weakened badly in the straight, revealed no abnormalities. Trainer K McGovern reported that the gelding has had past issues with its hind legs and IN TOO DEEP’s immediate racing future would now be considered. She was nonetheless advised the gelding must trial prior to its next start should it resume a racing a career.
 
HIDDEN CHIEF – Overraced in the middle stages.
 
PURPLE TRUMPET – Jumped awkwardly shifting out. Raced wide throughout.
 
TOP EVIE – Hung out rounding the first turn.
 
BABYLON EXPRESS – Hampered on jumping. Held up momentarily approaching the 150m and had to shift wide to improve into clear running.
 
ROCKY GAMBLE – Raced wide in the early stages.
 
Race 5: BARCALDINE WELDING WORKS OPEN HCP – 1200M
 
MEDIA VITA - Raced in restricted room passing the 800m.
 
SHIGERU MAHOGANY – Laid out over the concluding stages
 
KAKAKENNY- Jockey B Richardson pleaded guilty to a charge under AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that she used her whip 8 times prior to the 100m and 16 in total and subsequently was fined $300. When assessing penalty, stewards were mindful that KAKAKENNY won the race and jockey Richardsons’ recent record in relation to the rule.
 
ZUKAZ – Jumped awkwardly. Raced in restricted room passing the 800m.
 
WICKED WOODY – Jumped awkwardly.
 
TURKEY BEACH – Travelled wide in the early stages.
 
ACCOUNTANT – Travelled wide in the early stages.
 
Race 6: BARCALDINE PLUMBING & BUILDING SUPPLIES OPEN HCP – 1600M
 
FRENCH HUSSLER – When questioned regarding the poor performance, jockey D Ballard explained that he was under no real instructions but to have the horse where it was comfortable. He added that although he was wide, the gelding felt comfortable in the run in the early stages and he elected to keep his position. He further added that FRENCH HUSSLER failed to respond to his urgings when asked for an effort rounding the home turn and in the straight and was disappointing in its finishing effort. Jockey Ballard then further stated that after he had to steady off the heels of HEROISM near the 150m mark, he elected to ease his mount out of the race. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer T Austin undertook to report back to the stewards in the days subsequent on the condition of FRENCH HUSSLER. A swab sample was taken from the gelding.
 
BOLLENTE – Overraced in the early stages.
 
ARGENTO PEARLO – Steadied off the heels of BOLLENTE when rounding the home turn.
 
RHYOLA – Travelled wide throughout.
 
STYLISH LUCK – Slow to begin and overraced in the early stages. Held up momentarily passing the 200m and shifted inside to obtain clear running.
 
Race 7: BARCALDINE REGIONAL COUNCIL QTIS BM65 HCP – 1000M
 
WICKED EXPRESS – Travelled wide in the early stages.
 
DRAGON FIRE – In the vicinity of the 150m had to be checked
 
CHARLES – When questioned regarding the poor performance, jockey D Ballard stated that his intentions were to lead but CHARLES didn’t show the necessary early speed to cross from an outside barrier to do so and therefore was trapped wide. He added that at no stage of the race did the gelding feel comfortable and although the horse didn’t feel sore during the event, it didn’t respond to any of his urgings and failed to respond when asked for an effort. He further added that CHARLES had been stirred up when parading and also in the barriers which was out of character for the gelding. Trainer M Oates concurred with the statements of jockey Ballard and added possible reasons for the performance in his opinion, was a big weight and a wide barrier. He also added that he usually spaces CHARLES’ runs but due to recent programming and restrictions, has been inclined to race fortnightly which hasn’t been ideal for his training method. He further added that the gelding would now go for an immediate spell. Stewards nonetheless advised trainer M Oates that CHARLES would have to prove his competitiveness in a trial prior to racing again.
 
FLEWSHOT – Jumped awkwardly and hampered shortly after. Checked near the vicinity of the 150m off the heels of DRAGON FIRE when taken in by ROSEXCEL who shifted in when insufficiently clear to do so. At a subsequent enquiry, apprentice jockey E Bell pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding for allowing her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear and her license was suspended for a period of 7 days to commence at midnight 17th July and to expire midnight 24th July. In determining penalty, stewards considered apprentice Bells’ guilty plea and record.
 
HAYYLER’S TARY – Jumped awkwardly and contacted on the hindquarters shortly after.
 
ON THE BOSSA NOVA – Stood flat footed and missed the start as a result.
 
ROSEXCEL – Jumped awkwardly.
 
BOUND TO ME – Jumped awkwardly. Raced in restricted room over the concluding stages.
