Stewards Report

BUNDABERG RACE CLUB 7th September 2013

WEATHER - FINE TRACK RATING –SAND RAIL - TRUE

OFFICIALS

Chairman – K Daly
Steward – D Reid
Clerk of Scales – W Salzmann
Judge – R Prowd
Veterinarian – Dr S Porep
Swab Attendant – Dr C Maria
Bookmakers Supervisor - Stewards
Starter – A Emery

Race 1: CLASS 2 HDCP - 850m

NORTHERN SHIFT (App K Gates) jumped in at the start and bumped LISSOME LASS (App B Derbyshire) resulting in both runners becoming unbalanced for a short time.

OTANGO (S Bayliss) raced wide in the middle stages.

Race 2: CLASS B HDCP - 1212m

Correct weight was delayed to allow App B Derbyshire rider of STEERMAN and K Munce trainer of that gelding to view the patrol video to determine whether STEERMAN was afforded a fair start. After viewing the video, acting on their own observations and on a report from the starter, stewards found that as the gates opened STEERMAN reared, and as a result lost ground. In all circumstances stewards declared STEERMAN a runner. Mr Munce was advised a warning would be placed on the barrier manners of the gelding.

PRETTY POLLYANNA (App N Ogura) blundered on jumping away.

PRETTY POLLYANNA over-raced in the early and middle stages and on a number of occasions had to be steadied off the heels of MURRAMARANG (App K Gates).

Stewards questioned App B Derbyshire, rider of STEERMAN, regarding her tactics in the early and middle stages. She explained her instructions were to lead if possible, however after missing the start rode the gelding hard from the 1100 metres to take up a forward position wide on the track near the 500 metres, from which point STEERMAN commenced to weaken to finish in a mid-field position. Stewards advised App Derbyshire that in their opinion, after being slow to begin, she would have been better served allowing STEERMAN to gradually work into the race and give the gelding an opportunity to finish the race off. Trainer K Munce agreed with the stewards’ assessment and after considering all circumstances no further action was taken. K Munce further advised stewards it would be his intention to immediately spell STEERMAN.

App T Brooker, rider of KATIE WILL DO, explained that after settling outside the leader the mare had a tendency to lay in, and near the 600 metres was unable to hold its position when racing tightly between runners. She added that when able to find clear running approaching the home-turn, KATIE WILL DO found the line fairly.

Race 3: BENCHMARK 75 HDCP - 1090m

TIGERLICIOUS (S Bayliss) and I GET EXCITED (App T Brooker) came together at the start and bumped.

TWOGUNDAN (App B Derbyshire) was slow to begin.

WHITE CAP (App F Elliot) raced wide throughout.

S Bayliss, rider of TIGERLICIOUS, explained that after being hampered at the start, the gelding which was first up today, was unable to go the fast early speed, however finished the race off strongly and found the line well. He added TIGERLICIOUS is better suited over races over a longer distance.

Race 4: MAIDEN HDCP- 1090m

CELTIC AMBITION (App T Brooker) and GEMS TATT (S Bayliss) were both checked shortly after the start when tightened for room between BELLA BEIJING (App T Williams) and SECTION SIX (App N Ogura) which shifted in abruptly despite the efforts of its rider.

At scale App T Brooker, rider of CELTIC AMBITION reported that leaving the 900 metres the gelding, which was having its first start on the sand surface, commenced to race ungenerously and got its head up and lost ground. She added that once CELTIC AMBITION found clear running wider on the track and away from the sand kickback it found the line strongly.

CELTIC AMBITION had a tendency to shift out under pressure in the early stages of the home straight resulting in its rider having to stop riding and straighten on a number of occasions.

Race 5: BENCHMARK 65 HDCP - 1380m

Stewards accepted the explanation from T Hess, trainer of STAR GIGGLE, for the late declaration of rider on that gelding.

Correct weight was initially delayed to allow connections of fourth placegetter REMY MARTINI (App B Derbyshire) to view the video to determine if there were grounds to lodge a protest against second placegetter STAR GIGGLE (App N Ogura) alleging interference over the final 100 metres. Correct weight was further delayed to allow connections of FOMALSTAR (App F Elliot) to view the video to determine if that gelding was afforded a fair start. After viewing the video, connections of REMY MARTINI took the matter no further. At a subsequent inquiry App N Ogura, rider of STAR GIGGLE, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out under pressure over the concluding stages inconveniencing REMY MARTINI. In regards to the application by App F Elliot, stewards found that whilst FOMALSTAR was slightly fractious in the gates prior to release, the gelding was slow to begin as a result of its own barrier manners. Stewards subsequently declared correct weight on the semaphored placings.

App T Williams, rider of OAKMANTEL was reprimanded for permitting her mount to shift out near the 900 metres resulting in NENEVAH’S WISH ( I Coombes) being hampered.
