RACE 1: BENCHMARK 55 HDCP 850 Metres
WHANGAREI, which was having its first race start for over 12 months, was examined by the Club Vet prior to the event and cleared to start.
WHANGAREI was declared a late scratching by stewards acting on advice from the starter at 1.11pm when the mare was unable to be loaded into the barriers. Prior to the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered all monies on WHANGAREI to be refunded in full with deductions of 7cents win and 7 cents place face value of all winning bets. Trainer Ms N Mulcahy was advised the mare would require a further barrier certificate prior to its next race start.
SUPERB EFFORT (R Faehr) was slow to begin.
On jumping away DASHING YOUNG LOVE (K Gates) began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly resulting in LADY IN FRONT (App A Van Der Sanden) and DAILY PLANET G Colless) being hampered.
DASHING YOUNG LOVE and DAILY PLANET raced wide throughout.
At scale R Faehr, rider of SUPERB EFFORT, reported that after being slow to begin the gelding resented the sand kickback when racing back in the field and was reluctant to stretch out at any stage of the event.
RACE 2: QTIS MAIDEN HDCP 1090 Metres
CALL ME ISHMAEL, which was having its first race start in over 12 months, was examined by the Club Vet prior to the event and cleared to start.
EDE FUSE (J Missen) raced greenly in the early stages of the event.
CALL ME ISHMAEL (I Coombes) and DELIGHTFUL ABODE (App B Derbyshire) came together and bumped on jumping away.
GARY THE CONMAN (C Kearney) was slow to begin and then raced wide for the remainder of the event.
DELIGHTFUL ABODE shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.
At scale C Pye, rider of KROSS REFERANCE, reported the filly raced greenly throughout.
When questioned G Colless, rider of MALIBU THIEF, reported that making the turn at the 800 metres the gelding began to resent the sand kickback and from that point was reluctant to stretch out until rounding the home-turn. He added when MALIBU THIEF found clear running in the home straight the gelding finished the race off strongly and found the line well. Stewards accepted the explanation of G Colless.
RACE 3: OPEN HDCP 1090 Metres
On return to scale a protest was lodged by App A Van Der Sanden, rider of second past the post FLIGHT COMMAND, against first past the post COVERT CHARMOUR (App R Payne) for alleged interference over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from the riders concerned, viewing the patrol DVD and acting on their own observations, stewards dismissed the protest. In arriving at this decision stewards noted FLIGHT COMMAND and COVERT CHARMOUR momentarily brushed close to line when both horses shifted ground, however in their opinion this had no impact on the finishing positions of either runner. Correct weight was subsequently declared on the judge’s placings.
DREAM WITH ME (P Romeo) began awkwardly.
HAZAM (App B Derbyshire) raced wide throughout.
FLIGHT COMMAND had a tendency to shift ground inwards under pressure in the home straight.
C Kearney, rider of I GET EXCITED, was reprimanded for forehand use of the whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100 metres. In assessing penalty stewards took into account C Kearney’s good record under this rule.
RACE 4: BENCHMARK 65 HDCP 1212 Metres
SNEEZES, which competed in Race 1, was examined by the Club Vet prior to the start of this event and cleared to start.
KHANTANTES was declared a late scratching at 2:40pm when trainer N Mannion informed stewards the gelding had a temperature this morning and in his opinion was not fit to race. Stewards subsequently fined Mr Mannion $200 for failing to scratch KHANTANTES by the prescribed time. As betting on this event had commenced stewards ordered all bets on KHANTANTES be refunded in full with bets placed prior to 2:40pm to be paid less 23 cents win and 18 cents place face value of winning
bets. Mr Mannion was also advised he would be required to produce a Vet clearance prior to KHANTANTES next race start.
HONOUR JACKO (I Coombes) was slow to begin.
FOMALSTAR (C Pye) raced wide throughout.
G Colless, rider of MARTY, advised stewards that after settling outside the leader and travelling comfortably in the run, the gelding failed to run out a strong 1200 metres.
RACE 5: OPEN HDCP 1600 Metres
N Mannion, trainer of INTERVIEW, was reprimanded for failing to present the Document of Description card for that gelding.
EL SUPREMO (I Coombes) was inconvenienced on jumping away when TALLAHATCHIE (App B Derbyshire) shifted in.
CRAIGLEA BLONDIE (R Fraehr) was hampered shortly after the start when tightened for room between FRENCH COMMAND (P Romeo) and SWEET LITTLE FILLY (App R Payne) which was taken out by DEADLY DENNIS (C Kearney).
CRAIGLEA BLONDIE raced wide for the majority of the event.
Making the 1400 metres turn, INTERVIEW (L Dillon) became unbalanced and shifted out. INTERVIEW then raced wide for the remainder of the event.
