Race 1: BET SMARTER WITH THE BANKROLL BIBLE.COM CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1400M

CAPTAIN'S PICK – Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. Had to be checked near the 1100m and lost its position. S. Drake, the rider of VOANABA, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that at that point she allowed her mount to shift in when not fully clear of CAPTAIN’S PICK and at the same time reduced the pace. Jockey Drake’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 11 days, to commence at midnight on Tuesday 28 February and expire at midnight on Saturday 11 March 2017.

Apprentice A. Spinks was questioned regarding his tactics, particularly why he elected to restrain and surrender the lead approaching the 1100m and allow VOANABA to improve forward and obtain the lead, rather than allowing his mount to lead, which he was instructed to do by trainer B. Currie. Furthermore, stewards questioned him as to the reason why he did not use more vigour passing the 1000m to maintain contact with the remainder of the field instead of  obtaining a position at the rear of the field. Trainer B. Currie also expressed his dissatisfaction with apprentice Spinks’ riding of the horse. Apprentice A. Spinks stated that after beginning well he felt he had obtained the lead easily and therefore he elected to ease and allow VOANABA to cross. He admitted that in hindsight this was a misjudgement by him. Stewards agreed with apprentice Spinks that he had erred in not maintaining the lead as instructed in the early stages, however took into account his relative inexperience as an apprentice and did not take any action against his licence other than to remind him to ride his mounts, when possible, to instructions and not leave himself open to being culpable under the rules. Stewards also advised apprentice Spinks that his ride would be referred to the Racing Queensland Riding Skills Panel for tutelage. A post-race veterinary examination of the horse revealed no significant findings.
MY FIRECRACKER – Had to be checked from the heels of CAPTAIN’S PICK passing the 1200m. A short distance later again had to be checked and shifted out to avoid heels, resulting in OUR ROCKY being forced wider on the track.

OUR ROCKY – Forced wider on the track approaching the 1100m and as a result raced three wide without cover for the remainder of the event.

BROOKTON ICE – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Held up for clear running upon entering the home straight and had to shift to the inside of VOANABA in order to improve.

VOANABA – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Race 2: BET SMARTER WITH THE BANKROLL BIBLE.COM RATINGS BAND 0-62 H'CAP – 1650M

ROCKY EXPECTATIONS – A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the horse had mild heat stress.

BLACKJACK PRINCESS – Raced wide throughout.

Race 3: BET SMARTER WITH THE BANKROLL BIBLE.COM F&M MAIDEN PLATE – 1100M

GIFT OF LIFE – Slow to begin.

JUST PIP – Slow to begin. Hung out near the 700m and raced ungenerously and then shifted out and raced wide from that point onwards.

MISS COLOMBIA – As the horse had raced on the weekend, it underwent a pre-race veterinary examination which cleared it to start.

Following the running of this event the track was downgraded to SOFT 7 retrospective.

Race 4: BET SMARTER WITH THE BANKROLL BIBLE.COM C,G&E MAIDEN PLATE – 1100M

Due to the delay to the start of Race 3, this race was rescheduled to 3:10 pm.

BLACK CREEK – Hampered shortly after the start. Inclined to lay in in the home straight. Apprentice C. Jokic reported at scale that her mount did not handle the prevailing track conditions.

GOOD WORK – As the horse had raced on the weekend, it underwent a pre-race veterinary examination which cleared it to start.

LONE MARKSMAN – As the horse had raced on the weekend, it underwent a pre-race veterinary examination which cleared it to start. Trainer B. Robinson advised that it would be the intention to have the horse ridden in the lead if circumstances permit. The horse settled in a midfield position.

BUTTER TOAST, which refused to be loaded into the barriers, was declared a late scratching at 3:17 pm. Trainer B. Currie was advised that the gelding would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate prior to racing again. Mr Currie indicated to stewards that the gelding would now be retired from his stable. On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on BUTTER TOAST be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

33 cents in the dollar for the Win #10
21 cents in the dollar for place of winner #10
21 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #4
21 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #5

Race 5: BET SMARTER WITH THE BANKROLL BIBLE.COM CLASS 3 PLATE – 1200M

COUNTER MEAL – A. Sewell dropped his whip near the 100m.

ROCK SPARK – Following the running of Race 1 trainer B. Currie approached stewards to request that apprentice S. Sweeney replace apprentice A. Spinks on ROCK SPARK as Mr Currie was most dissatisfied with apprentice Spinks’ handling of his runner in Race 1. Stewards acceded to this request, however ordered that apprentice Spinks be entitled to a winning or losing riding fee. Apprentice S. Sweeney subsequently replaced apprentice A. Spinks as rider. Slow to begin.

Following the running of this event, due to the track deteriorating it was downgraded to HEAVY 8 retrospective.

Race 6: BET SMARTER WITH THE BANKROLL BIBLE.COM CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1050M

The start of this race was rescheduled to 4:15 pm.

TEVYE became fractious in the barriers, reared up and became cast. The horse was examined by the veterinary surgeon and declared a late scratching at 4:16 pm on veterinary advice. Trainer L. Gough was advised that the gelding would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate prior to racing again. On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on TEVYE be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

5 cents in the dollar for the Win #3
5 cents in the dollar for place of winner #3
5 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #1
5 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #10

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow trainer B. Robinson to view the photo finish image for 4th.

CONGELATOR – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped HOW BIG’S THE HOLE.

BEVEILE – L. Tarrant reported that his mount failed to handle the prevailing track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a minor laceration to the near foreleg consistent with being galloped on.
