GENERAL

As R. Plumb was not riding due to illness, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: AQUIS BEAUDESERT MAIDEN H’CAP – 1300M

The declaration of correct weight was delayed when stewards were made aware that the Judging panel had not arrived on course. After reviewing the film and being satisfied with the placings, stewards then declared correct weight on 6, 2, 4 and 7.

THE KNIGHT – Hung out under pressure on the home turn.

TOO HARD TO RATTLE – Hung in under pressure over the final 80m and proved difficult to ride out. Trainer D. Forster indicated that in her opinion the gelding may have found the firmness of today’s track conditions not to its liking.

HARLIN ROSE – Raced greenly shortly after the start and shifted in before shying away from the rail.

MIGHTY MOOSE – Overraced in the early stages. Hung in and was tightened near the line.

ODDFELLOW – Raced three wide with cover for the majority of the event.

PROPOSED – Overraced in the middle stages.

HIGH HUSSY – Dipped approximately 100m after the start. Raced three wide throughout before tiring noticeably over the final 600m. Stewards, after considering today’s performance, advised trainer V. Heading that a metropolitan and provincial bar will be placed on the mare.

PLUCKY PANTHER – Slow into stride. Tired over the concluding stages. Trainer S. Essery was advised that due to the horse’s poor performance today it would be stood down from competing at TAB venues until its form improves to a satisfactory standard.

STYLISH LOVER – Obliged to steady approaching the 100m.

This race was hand timed.

Race 2: SPILL THE BEANS @ AQUIS FARM C,G&E CLASS 3 PLATE – 1200M

Prior to the running of this event stewards appointed James Cable as Judge and steward Ian Brown as his assistant.

BAREFOOT TYCOON – Began awkwardly. When questioned regarding his riding, jockey M. Cahill stated that he was instructed to occupy a forward trailing position, however, approaching the 700m was inconvenienced by the tiring LAST CIGAR, which resulted in the gelding losing its position. Jockey Cahill was then obliged to steady and shift wider on the course in the run to the finish. Stewards noted his comments.

FEW TOO MANY – Fractious in the barriers. Raced three wide with cover throughout. Obliged to steadied when overracing approaching the 900m.

MISHANI RAINMAN – Began moderately before mustering early speed to occupy a forward position.

MISTER SPINKS – Raced three wide throughout. Shifted in slightly near the 600m.

JUST FAVULOUS – Shifted out slightly near the 600m. Shifted out rounding the home turn. L. Tilley reported that it had not been his intention to lead on the gelding, however when racing three wide he elected to press forward and lead.

LAST CIGAR – Tightened between runners when tiring approaching the 600m.

Race 3: CELEBRATE XMAS EVE @ AQUIS BEAUDESERT F&M CLASS 3 PLATE – 1200M

Stewards inquired into an incident near the 1100m where it appeared that both VERILY (C. Frater-Hill) and GYPSY’S TIP (B. Thornton) were checked and lost their positions. After taking evidence from both riders and R. Stewart (SHIELD WALL) and M. Du Plessis (ZARREEN) it was established that SHIELD WALL, when four wide on the course, may have been directed slightly in when SOLO MELODY (C. Gallagher) crossed in advance of that runner. ZARREEN, which was racing to the inside of SHIELD WALL, then shifted in and away from that runner despite the efforts of its rider and may have overreacted to the pressure placed to its outside whereby consequently both GYPSY’S TIP and VERILY were tightened and checked to the inside of that runner and lost their positions. Stewards, after considering all the evidence, were not satisfied they could apportion blame to any one rider and noted the incident.

EXCELAMOUR – M. Cahill reported that whilst his instructions were to ride the mare back in the field, after it began well and raced keenly, he was then obliged to take up a forward position. When questioned as to the significant betting drift, trainer A. Plumb noted that the mare was having its first start for her stable today. Ms Plumb also noted that the mare had been successful in a Benchmark 70 at Canterbury at its last start and as such she was not surprised at its opening price. Ms Plumb also stated that the mare had impressed her in its work and unofficial trial leading into today’s race, on the basis of which she was confident of a forward showing. Ms Plumb further added that prior to the race it had been her intention that the mare settle towards the rear of the field, which was consistent with its previous racing patterns, however she was not disappointed when the rider elected to settle closer to the speed today after beginning well in a small field. A post-race swab sample was taken.

VERILY – Checked and lost its position near the 1100m.

ART SHE QUICK – Bumped by GYPSY’S TIP near the 1100m and shifted wider.

GYPSY’S TIP – Began awkwardly, making heavy contact with the barrier partition. Tightened for room near the 1100m, checked and lost its position before shifting wider.

Race 4: THE MISSION @ AQUIS FARM QTIS 3YO FILLIES MAIDEN PLATE – 1300M

Trainer T. Edmonds was fined $100 for the late declaration of R. Maloney as the rider of COOLWEDGE.

AMIRAT JAMILA – Jumped awkwardly and was slow into stride. Obliged to steady from heels rounding the home turn before easing wider on the course.

BEYONCNEIGH – Slow into stride.

GO DIAMONDS – Began awkwardly. Hung out rounding the home turn.

IBERIAN LACE – Began moderately.

JEOPARDISE ME – Raced greenly in the early stages.

MISS SIZZ – Raced three wide throughout.

Race 5: RECOVER ON NEW YEARS DAY @ AQUIS BEAUDESERT QTIS 3YO C&G MAIDEN PLATE – 1300M

FRANKEL STAR – Overraced in the early and middle stages.

HEKANSPLIT – Shifted out under pressure in the straight.

MAJAQUA – Tired noticeably from the 500m before being retired from the event. The gelding was found to have bled from both nostrils. Connections were advised that the gelding will be stood down from racing for a period of three months and required to trial satisfactorily in the presence of stewards over 1000m prior to the resumption of racing.

PENASQUITO – Raced three wide for the majority of the event. Obliged to steady near the 600m.

RAHEESH – When racing keenly between runners approaching the 800m was steadied and shifted back towards the rail. Put in an awkward stride approaching the 600m and was retired from the event. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination and was found to be lame in the off hind leg. Trainer B. Smith was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

RICHEST – Raced four wide for the majority of the event.

SID – Fractious in the barriers, delaying the start. Obliged to steady from the heels of PENASQUITO approaching the 800m. After inquiring into the incident, stewards advised R. Stewart, the rider of PENASQUITO, to exercise greater care when shifting ground.

SILVER PLATES – Raced three wide for the majority of the event. Trainer G. Cornish advised that his intention was to spell the horse. Stewards advised Mr Cornish that the horse will be required to barrier trial prior to the resumption of racing.

Race 6: DOMESDAY @ AQUIS FARM CLASS 6 H’CAP – 1400M

The declaration of correct weight was delayed slightly to afford R. Wiggins and J. Orman, the riders of the dead-heaters for first, the opportunity of viewing the photo finish image.

GREYWOLF – Slow into stride. Commenced to overrace due to the moderate tempo leaving the 1000m, shifted wider on the course and was allowed to stride forward and race on the speed and was then obliged to race three wide for the remainder of the event. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, S. Bogenhuber stated that the gelding refused to settle in the early stages and proved difficult to ride, hence rather than fight the gelding she elected to improve wider on the course.

MOTION GRANTED – Shifted out abruptly near the 150m, making contact with ALLENA.  Jockey R. Wiggins was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

CHARLIE CAT – Forced wider leaving the 1000m.

ART ATTACK – Hung in rounding the home turn and again approaching the 150m hung in significantly, contacting ALLENA, and proved difficult to ride.

LUCKY CHAMPION – Overraced in the early and middle stages.

RESET’S SON – Began awkwardly and was slow into stride.

BROWN LINES – Jumped out as the start was effected. Raced three wide for the majority of the event. Wanted to lay out approaching the home turn.

Race 8: AQUIS FARM CLASS 2 PLATE – 1650M

MOSSERATI – Raced wide in the early stages.

SHADAL – Slow to begin. Held up between the 600m and the 400m.

TYCOON LAYLA – Shifted out rounding the home turn. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, apprentice C. Frater-Hill stated that her instructions today were to lead on the mare. On jumping from barrier 2 and being ridden hard in the early stages to lead, the mare then overraced and refused to settle despite her efforts before establishing a significant lead.

KATARINA – Resented proceeding to the barriers and dislodged the rider on two occasions. Trainer G. Cornish was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s pre-race manners. Following the event apprentice J. Hodge advised stewards that his left foot was sore after it made contact with the barriers on jumping.

RIVAL MO – Began moderately. M. Du Plessis reported that the mare made some abnormal respiratory noises throughout the event and therefore he did not place the mare under undue pressure over the final stages. A post-race veterinary examination could find no apparent abnormalities. Trainer B. Guy was requested to advise stewards should anything some to light in the next 48 hours which may have had a bearing on the horse’s performance today.
