SEQUOIA CHIEFTAIN - Over-raced during the middle stages.

THE WOLVERINE – Slow to begin. Steadied to avoid heels near the 2200m while over-racing. Near the 150m was steadied to avoid the heels of BANTAMWEIGHT which shifted out whilst being corrected by its rider after laying in. Neither jockey E Chaves nor trainer J Smerdon could offer any tangible explanation for the below market expectation performance of the gelding.  A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to find any significant abnormalities. Trainer J Smerdon reported that in light of todays’ performance he would now consider the gelding’s racing future in his stable.

ABBEY BRIDGE - Over-raced in the early and middle stages.

BANTAMWEIGHT - Slow away, lost ground. Near the 150m shifted out when being corrected by its rider whilst laying in causing THE WOLVERINE to steady from heels.

On returning to scale jockey S Thornton advised in her opinion the gelding being pressured in the middle stages by another runner was the major contributing factor in the horse failing to run on when placed under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering mild heat stress and to have a slow post-race recovery.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be stepping short in both fore legs. Trainer S Barker advised the gelding would now be retired from racing however, nevertheless he was advised a Veterinary Certificate of soundness and barrier trial to Stewards satisfaction is required should the gelding race again.
