GRIPPING – Steward’s questioned jockey N Callow in relation to the tactics adopted on the gelding, particularly in the early and middle stages when settling further back in the field than anticipated. Jockey Callow advised that he was instructed not to overly pressure the gelding in the early and middle stages and to allow it to settle where it was comfortable as the gelding has a tendency to over race if ridden aggressively. Jockey Callow added that it was his intention to settle further forward however bearing in mind his instructions and given the gelding had relaxed during the middle stages as opposed to over racing, he was content to race in a rearward position. Jockey Callow went on to state that the slow tempo during the middle stages of the event were not to the benefit of the gelding but when placed under pressure it ran on well and if good enough in the home straight, in his opinion was in a position to win the event. Stewards noted jockey Callow’s comments.
