From SCTC 20th August 2023 Race 8 Class 1 Hdcp – SIR CARTER: Trainer W. Hulbert reported a veterinary examination of the horse the following day revealed an ulcer in the upper respiratory tract. Mr Hulbert added SIR CARTER was currently receiving treatment for this condition, and that going forward a tongue tie would now be added to the horses approved racing gear.

GENERAL

Stewards approved the following overweight allowances at today’s meeting-

Race 2 – HIGHLAND CATHEDRAL – J. Guthmann-Chester +0.5kg (56kg)

Prior to race 1, Jockey N. Thomas was examined by the QAS officials after suffering a cut to the middle finger on his right hand and was cleared to fulfil his engagements.

Due to an IT Issue with Racing Australia DECARBONISE was listed as a scratching late yesterday afternoon. This was incorrect and DECARBONISE was declared a definite starter for today’s meeting.

Race 1: TAB MAIDEN PLATE 1650M

AGRO AGAIN – Began awkwardly, resulting in jockey J. Adams’ left shoulder contacting the barrier partition. At the entrance to the home straight, momentarily held up at the heels of BAGUIO. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.

UTAH JOHNNY – Slow to begin.

YOUNG PIP – Jumped out at the start. Left a trailing position at the 800m and progressed forward to race outside the leader a short distance later

CATCH CRIES (NZ) – Slow to begin.

LOVE LOCH – Connections advised that it would be the intention for the mare to be ridden further forward in today’s event if circumstances permit. After being unable to muster speed in the early stages, was caught three-wide and progressed forward to lead the event from the 900m.

Race 2: JONKER AT AQUIS STALLIONS MAIDEN PLATE 1650M

Correct weight was delayed allowing stewards and starter K. Watson to view start of the event. After taking evidence from all riders who rode in the race and viewing the official patrol footage, Stewards found that prior to the start AMIRITE and WHITTLESFORD both became fractious in the barriers, and as the start was effected WHITTLESFORD lunged at the gates, prematurely opening its barrier. LICENCE TO THRILL, which was drawn to the outside of WHITTLESFORD, blundered on jumping dislodging jockey N. Thomas. After hearing comments from all riders, Stewards considered applications from both L Tarrant, rider of WHITTLESFORD and N Thomas, rider of LICENCE TO THRILL, to be considered non-runners. Based on the available patrol footage and evidence submitted by Mr Watson, Stewards were of the opinion neither WHITTLEFORD or LICENCE TO THRILL were denied a fair start under AR204 and correct weight declared on the semaphored placings.

PARIS FASHION – On arrival at the barriers, Jockey K. Zechner requested for the mare to be examined by the veterinary surgeon. The mare was found to be lame on the off foreleg and was subsequently declared a late scratching by order of the stewards at 12:18pm acting on veterinary advice. Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on PARIS FASHION be refunded with the following deductions to apply –

1st place – 0c the win, 0c the place.
2nd place – 10c the place.
3rd place – 17c the place.

Trainer D. Murphy was advised that PARIS FASHION would require a veterinary certificate prior to next racing.

BACK 'EM BLACK – Slow to begin.

SMELTER (IRE) – Slow to begin.

WHITTLESFORD – Trainer J Zielke advised that from the wide barrier, it would be the intention for the gelding to be ridden in a less forward position. Lunged at the gates prior to the start being effected and prematurely opened its barrier. When caught racing wide, was inclined to over race in the early and middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding which finished a significant distance behind the field revealed no abnormalities.

AMIRITE – Raced wide for the majority. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare which finished a significant distance behind the field revealed it to be lame in the near hindleg. Trainer M. Frappell was advised that AMRITE would require a veterinary examination prior to next racing.

Following the running of Race 3 the track was upgraded to a good 4, retrospective to include that race.

Race 4: STRONGER AT AQUIS STALLIONS QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1200M

MISHANI CRUISE – Put in an awkward stride soon after entering the home straight and was then inclined to lay in under pressure thereafter.

SHORT NAP – Slow to begin, was unable to muster speed at any stage in the event and finished a considerable distance behind the field. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Co-Trainer R. Tyrell was advised that the gelding would be barred from racing at TAB venues until its form improves at non-tab venues.

Race 5: ROGER 'WHALE' TRIFFITT LEGEND MAIDEN HANDICAP          1200M

The start was delayed when GOLD 'N' GLAMOROUS became lose behind the barriers and made contact with a fence at the back of the 1400m chute. GOLD ‘N’ GLAMOROUS was subsequently declared a late scratching by order of the stewards at 2:12pm. Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on GOLD ‘N’ GLAMOROUS be refunded with the following deductions to apply:

1st place – 9c the win, 7c the place
2nd place – 17c the place

In assessing the incident, Stewards could not attribute the blame to any one rider and took the matter no further.

MORE LOVE – Raced wide throughout.

VITA NOVA – Slow to begin.

JUST FOR PLEASURE – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Reported the horse raced greenly throughout.

MILEY'S MEMORY – Raced wide for the majority.

BOOMSITA – Inclined to lay out rounding the home turn.

GOLDEELUCK – Near the 150m, shifted out under pressure before being corrected by its rider.

SENNACHIE – Restrained at the start to a rearward position closer to the rails.

CARREFOUR – Began awkwardly, crowded between runners and lost ground. Raced wide until obtaining a position outside the leader near the 600m. Stewards inquired into the tactics adopted by jockey B. Ainsworth, the rider of CARREFOUR, particularly when after being crowded at the start and losing ground elected to progress forward to take up a forward position near the 600m before weakening from the 400m. B. Ainsworth stated that instructions were to lead or be in the first four, however after settling at the rear of the field, elected to allow CARREFOUR to stride forward as she was conscience that the mare can over race when racing behind other runners. Trainer G. Cornish confirmed the instructions issued, expressing some disappointment in the tactics adopted. After viewing the patrol footage, Stewards were of the opinion B. Ainsworth had erred in that after being obliged to race at the rear of the field, she allowed CARREFOUR to progress forward to obtain a position outside the leader near the 600m, which was a critical factor in the mare weakening from the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination of CARREFOUR revealed no abnormalities.

TAVIS TOWN (NZ) – Jockey L. Tarrant reported that his mount never travelled comfortably throughout the race and was disappointing in its overall performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.  Trainer P. Duncan advised Stewards although the horse had been showing signs of tying-up in the weeks leading up to today’s event, TAVIS TOWN had responded well to treatment and had pleased in its work during the week. Mr Duncan further advised Stewards that he would report back in the coming days any condition which may come to light to explain todays disappointing performance, adding that he would be discussing the horses immediate racing future with connections.

Jones the rider of GENERAL DUBAI was advised to exercise more care and provide greater room for runners to her inside than she did on this occasion.
