GENERAL
Stewards approved the following overweight allowance at today’s meeting:
Race 3 – BILLILICIOUS – G. Cartwright +1kg (56kg)
As jockey J. Morris was not riding at today’s meeting and jockey B. Lerena was to be overweight in Races 3 & 4, rider replacements were made as per the Stewards summary.
Jockey B. Lerena was fined $200 pursuant to AR190(3) for accepting two rides when overweight. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account his good record under this rule.
The track was upgraded to a Good 3 at 11:30am.
Race 1: TAB WE'RE ON BENCHMARK 58 Handicap 2450M
WATERMELON – Improved onto heels near the 1900m and shifted out momentarily. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Near the 600m, fell, dislodging apprentice C. Sutherland. Stewards adjourned an inquiry into this matter to a time and date to be determined. A post-race veterinary examination revealed swelling and an abrasion to the right eye. Trainer R. Dart was advised that the gelding would require a veterinary clearance prior to next racing.
YA LOVE HER – Raced three-wide without cover from the 1000m.
ARCHERS REIGN – When asked to comment, jockey M. Cahill reported the gelding travelled well until placed under pressure from the 400m and in his opinion didn’t run out the 2450m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
CHEAP WINE (NZ) – Raced in restricted room near the 1900m.
GOING TO THE SUN – Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Cast its off-fore plate in running.
CAMELOT STAR (IRE) – Restrained at the start and shifted behind runners to a rearward position closer to the rail. Jockey M. Hellyer reported the gelding stood on his foot when unsaddling following the race.
Following this race, Apprentice C. Sutherland was examined by QAS officials and cleared of any major injuries, however, was stood down from his ride in race 4 pending a satisfactory concussion test which was subsequently completed on course. Apprentice Sutherland was advised that he must obtain a medical clearance prior to his next race or trial ride.
Race 2: STRONGER FIRST FOALS Maiden Handicap 1300M
AIR OF AUTHORITY – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages.
PHOENIX STORM – Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the straight, and when struck with the whip approaching the 100m, shifted in abruptly before being corrected.
TIPPED OFF – Near the 1200m, steadied when crowded for room between SPIRITUAL RHYTHM and palmer which was taken in by THRIFTYMISS (D. Turner). Jockey D. Turner was advised to exercise greater care.
STOP THE TAPE – Raced wide without cover throughout.
TARADALE – Slow to begin.
SIX OF ONE – Over raced in the early stages. Apprentice S. Champkin reported the mare raced greenly throughout.
ARTISTIC TOUCH – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages.
THRIFTYMISS – Raced wide from leaving the 600m.
Race 3: OFFICIATING AT AQUIS QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap 1400M
FRENCH EMPIRE – Shifted out on jumping.
THAT’S YOU – Tightened for room between runners and checked on jumping. After being struck with the whip near the 150m, raced greenly and shifted in abruptly.
QUEEN HIGH (NZ) – Slow to muster speed in the early stages. Jockey M. Palmer reported the filly, which was having its first race start, raced greenly throughout and would derive race experience from today’s race.
RED HUSSY – Began awkwardly and shifted in. Raced keenly for a short distance and shifted in when joining up to the course proper near the 1000m.
HEY CHARDONNAY – Jockey J. Huxtable reported it was not his intention to lead, however after beginning well and with the limited speed shown from runners to the inside, he allowed the filly to roll forward and lead the event.
BILLILICIOUS – Began awkwardly. Near the 1300m, bumped with HURRICANE ROSIE and became unbalanced.
HURRICANE ROSIE – Near the 1300m, bumped with BILLILICIOUS. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
GIRL AMONG MANY – Slow to begin and then hampered after the start. Raced greenly throughout the event and when placed under pressure near the 100m.
GOOD DAY MAE – Slow to begin.
Race 4: JONKER FIRST YEARLINGS 2025 Class 2 Plate 1200M
NOBLE INTENT – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages.
BADDA BOOM BABY – Laid in under pressure over the final 100m.
BOARD MEMBER – Raced keenly in the early stages.
HIDDEN MELODY – Began awkwardly.
KASEAR – Near the 700m, raced in restricted room for a short distance to the inside of ASTERN VILLA.
ICY ISEA – Slow to begin.
VOS SAVANT – Stewards permitted the mare to race without a nasal strip when that piece of gear was unable to be fitted due to the heat. Resaddled on arrival at the barriers. Momentarily held up approaching the home turn on the heels of ICY ISEA before shifting to the inside to obtain clear running a short distance later. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have abrasions to both hind legs, consistent with having been galloped on. Trainer I. Turner was advised that the mare would require a veterinary clearance prior to next racing.
Race 5: TAB WE'RE ON BENCHMARK 62 Handicap 1650M
TUQIRI bumped its head in the tie-up stalls, underwent a veterinary examination prior to the event which revealed blood in the off-side nostril and was subsequently declared a late scratching on at 2:41pm. Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on TUQIRI be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st place – 37c the win, 30c the place
2nd place – 32c the place
3rd place – 30c the place
The start of this race was delayed approximately 5 minutes when NAGAMIE, on arrival behind the barriers, shied and spun around dislodging jockey M. Palmer before galloping riderless for some distance. Subsequently was declared a late scratching at 2:55pm. Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on NAGAMIE be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st place – 37c the win, 25c the place
2nd place – 27c the place
3rd place – 24c the place
TROPIC SANDS – Raced three-wide from the 800m.
OUR ORATOR – Near the 1000m, improved onto the heels of SIR BEVERIDGE and shifted out resulting in TIRITIRI being taken wider on the track. Held up for clear running from the 350m until the 250m and then again on entrance of the home straight before obtaining clear running approaching the 100m.
BOVIDAE – Raced wide in the early stages before progressing forward to lead from 1100m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer D. Murphy was advised that the gelding would require a veterinary certificate, inclusive with the results of an ECG and would be required to perform to the satisfaction of Stewards in a 1000m gallop/trial/jumpout prior to next racing.
PASSIONATE REBEL – Slow to begin. Laid out rounding the home turn resulting in both SIR BEVERIDGE and TIRITIRI being taken wider.
TIRITIRI (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 1000m, taken wider on the track. Taken wider rounding the home turn.
CHAYSE ‘N’ ADAM – Leaving the 200m, held up for clear running between OUR ORATOR and THE WELLIAN which shifted in marginally under pressure.
THE WELLIAN – Shifted in under pressure in the early stages of the home straight.
MAYBE SMART – In the presence of trainer B Robinson, Stewards questioned apprentice I Jessop over tactics adopted particularly in leading the race today compared to its most recent starts where the horse settled at the rear of the field. Apprentice Jessop stated instructions, which were confirmed by trainer B Robinson, were to restrain from the wide barrier and work into the race from the 600m. Ms Jessop further explained due to the considerable delay behind the barriers, MAYBE SMART became very agitated adding that after beginning well she was unable to comply with the instructions to restrain and therefore elected to allow MAYBE SMART to stride forward and lead the event. After noting the circumstances, particularly in respect to the extended delay behind the barriers, Stewards accepted the explanation of apprentice Jessop.
SIR BEVERIDGE – Taken wider rounding the home turn.
Following the running of this race, jockey M. Palmer was transported to hospital with an injury to his hand. Jockey Palmer was advised that he would require a medical certificate prior to next riding.
Race 6: AQUIS BEAUDESERT RACEDAY JAN 16 BENCHMARK 58 Handicap 1400M
The start of this race was delayed approximately 10 minutes awaiting for the ambulance, which had transported M Palmer to hospital, returning to the track.
BETTER YET – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying symptoms of the thumps.
CAPITAL CEE – Began awkwardly.
JENNI INDA JUNGLE – Raced wide throughout.
OCEAN ALPS – Bumped and hampered at the start.
MIDNIGHT DRIFTER – Raced wide throughout. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages and as a result approaching the winning post had to be steadied from the heels of DUPONT.
MILEY’S MEMORY – Raced wide without cover throughout.
PISA CAKE – Weakened from the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer’s representative was advised that the mare would require a veterinary certificate, inclusive with the results of an ECG and would be required to perform to the satisfaction of Stewards in a 1000m gallop/trial/jumpout prior to next racing.
BEE EXACT – Restrained at the start and shifted behind runners to a rearward position closer to the rail. Held up between the 500m and the 250m. Cast its near-hind plate in running.
Race 7: AQUIS BEAUDESERT RACEDAY FEB 6 BENCHMARK 65 Handicap 1100M
BARONESSA – As the start was effected, turned its head to the offside and as a result was very slow to begin.
DUSAN – Slow to begin. When asked to comment on the performance, jockey M. McGuren advised that after beginning only fairly, he was obliged to settle further back in the field than anticipated, however was disappointed in the geldings finishing efforts when placed under pressure leaving the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer S. McGuren was advised the gelding would require a veterinary clearance prior to next racing.
MY DOG DIESEL – Raced three-wide without cover for the majority. Near the 400m, laid in momentarily crowding HIT.
ATOMIC SELFIE – Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide with cover for the majority.
KWIK AZ HELL – Held up for clear running from the 400m until the 250m.
RUSSIAN MINT – Raced keenly in the early stages.
HIT – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Near the 400m, crowded for room when MY DOG DIESEL laid in.
