When questioned into the disappointing performance of SYLVAN SAFARI, rider C. Dixon reported that the gelding travelled well in the early and middle stages of the race but failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure in the home straight and whilst he was disappointed with the horses performance he was further of the opinion that SYLVAN SAFARI may not have been comfortable on today’s track conditions. Trainer T. Austin was at a loss to explain the poor performance as the gelding had pleased him leading up to today’s event and gave an undertaking should anything comes to his attention in the near future that may have had a bearing on today’s performance he would advise the stewards. A post race veterinary examination of SYLVAN SAFARI failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 2: PE & GC HARRIS/GD BALLARD TRANSPORT PTY LTD CLASS 5 H’CAP – 1200M
1st – AIR BUS 2nd – JENZAN 3rd – FAMOUS CRY 4th – PERIANDER

As C. Dixon was unable to make the allotted weight of 59kg as the rider of AIR BUS, he was replaced by W. Doyle. C. Dixon was fined the sum of $100.00 under AR120(b).

The start was delayed when JENZAN (C. Kearney) proved difficult to load, trainer S. Cunningham was advised that a warning would be placed on the mares barrier manners.

TYCOON IS IN (R. Mules) jumped out at the start making contact with JENZAN which was slow to begin. TYCOON IS IN then raced ungenerously for a short distance when being corrected.

TYCOON IS IN threw its head in the air and hung out when being restrained near the 1000m when racing in restricted between ALL ROYAL (S. Galvin) and JENZAN which shifted in. C. Kearney, the rider of JENZAN was advised to show greater care when shifting ground.

Race 4: BETOOTA FLYING OPEN H’CAP – 1000M

The start was delayed when AUSSIE ROCK (M. Crawford) got it head over the top of starting gates and when being corrected SHOREPHIL (R. Mules) which was in an enjoining stall became very fractious and backed out the barriers riderless and as a result broke through the outside running rail and escaped off course. SHOREPHIL was declared a late scratching at 3.57pm by order of stewards and acting under LR113 (7) ordered all bets placed on SHOREPHIL be refunded with deductions of 33 cents in the dollar on the face value of all win bets and 21 cents in the dollar on the face value of all place bets be applicable. Trainer B. Smith was advised a warning would be placed on SHOREPHIL’S barrier manners. After being recaptured SHOREPHIL was examined by the veterinary surgeon who reported no abnormalities detected.

Due to the quick release of the field following the incident, stewards delayed correct weight to confirm that the starter Mr Kirstenfeldt had officiated the start. After confirmation stewards were satisfied the start of the race was effected and declared correct weight on the judges numbers.

Race 5: BLACK TOYOTA BETOOTA CUP OPEN H’CAP – 1600M
1st – SIR JAMES 2nd – KALMAN 3rd – NO SHACKLES 4th – DECERTO

Stewards questioned B. Richardson, the rider of LOTTO BLUES, regarding the tactics adopted on the horse in the early and middles stages when sharing the lead which was not its normal pattern of racing. Ms Richardson stated that her instructions were to ride the horse back off the pace but after beginning so well LOTTO BLUE commenced to over-race and as a result she was unable to restrain the horse in behind PALOLO DEEP (D. Rewald) and EIGHT RED (S. McCullum) forcing EIGHT RED to race three wide for the majority of the race. Trainer K. Healy confirmed the riding instructions and was agreeable with B. Richardson assessment. After viewing the race film Stewards accepted the explanations.

Mr Healy when further questioned on the performance of EIGHT RED stated that with the pressure being on in the early and middle stages the gelding was unable to obtain the lead which it has done at previous two starts and won and as a result was obliged to race wide which was a telling factor on the performance and is also of the opinion that EIGHT RED races better when able to lead. His explanation was noted.

ZERO LOYLALTY (C. Kearney) which raced wide for the majority was forced wider rounding the home turn by ONLY LOOKING (C. Dixon) which shifted out to improve. C. Dixon was advised to exercise more cared when shifting ground.
