Trainer T. Austin was questioned on the issue of no riders being declared for horses trained by him. Mr Austin explained he had accepted on the evening prior to acceptances and at the time for rider declarations had been en route to Betoota without communication. While this explanation was accepted, Mr Austin was reminded to ensure jockeys are declared at the appropriate time.
When Apprentice G Steele was found to be overweight in Races 4, 5 and 6, replacement riders were substituted and a fine of $200 was imposed. In determination of penalty, Stewards considered that this was her first breach of AR 120 (b).
Race 1: Birdsville Hotel/Vaughan Johnson/ G & T Contracting Class 2 Handicap- 1200 metres
SHAFTSMAN- Began awkwardly and commence to lose ground shortly after the start. On return to enclosure, it was observed the gelding had bled from both nostrils. As this was the first occasion, the horse would be barred for a period of 3 months and must pass a 1000m gallop before Stewards.
ATEACES- From near the 400 metres until near the 200 metres, was held up for clear running.
MY FLING- A post-race veterinary inspection revealed an upper respiratory noise.
SKY DISK- Began awkwardly and lost some ground.
Race 2: Mt. Leonard Stn/ GDL (Quilpie)/ Cobram Flyers/ Not Just Hardware Class 5 Handicap- 1200 metres
When Jockey D Rewald was required to ride a horse trained by him that had gained a start, and no other rider was available at the time of rider declarations, App C Gallagher was permitted to ride DIXIE MISS.
BILLY JAY- Was declared a late scratching at 11.15am when the trainer was advised the horse had gain a start however he had not travelled the horse to the racing venue.
RHYTHM NATION- Declared a late scratching at 11.15am after gaining a start in the race however the trainer elected to scratch.
MY MOVE- Stepped back before the start was effected and lost some ground.
ROYAL FROLIC- Commenced to lose ground shortly after the start to race at rear of the field. Regarding the performance, rider stated the gelding may not have travelled well to the racing venue and had not eaten up well prior to racing today.
Race 3: Cordillo Downs/ Landmark/ Krakka Fabrications QTIS Maiden Plate- 1000 metres
FRISCO- Slow to begin
I’M A CLANGER- Due to 12 months since its previous start, underwent a pre-race veterinary inspection and was cleared to take its place in the field. Taken wide on the track near the 400 metres.
THE GREYMOUTH GIRL- Began awkwardly, was slow into stride and lost ground.
NAHARIYA- Rider reported that approaching the 800 metres, when shifting inwards, horse clipped the heels of SEALEGS LILLY blundered and lost ground.
SEALEGS LILLY- Taken wide on the track near the 400 metres.
GIRLSGOGIDDYUP- Hung out near the 400 metres and took I’M A CLANGER and SEALEGS LILLY wide on the track.
Race 4: Visitors Flying Open Handicap- 1000 metres
AZARAX- Slow into stride.
Stewards and Apprentice Q Krogh viewed the photo finish print for first. After doing so, satisfied that the placings were as determined by the judges, correct weight was declared.
Race 5: Birdsville Bakery Betoota Cup Open Handicap- 1600 metres
BANNER- A post-race veterinary inspection did not reveal any abnormalities. Rider reported that gelding resented the dust and when taken wide, the horse was able to make up some ground.
SECRETS- Slow to begin.
TOUCAN UKELELE- Slow to begin.
NO OTHER WAY- Due to a miscommunication and error in declaration, K Ballard was dually engaged. However, Stewards permitted App Q Krogh to be substituted as he had originally accepted the ride.
Race 6: Betoota Class B Handicap- 800 metres
MISS NOVELTY- As the mare had not started since December, 2013, underwent a pre-race veterinary inspection and was cleared to take its place in the field.
PINCQAR- Commenced to hang out near the 600 metres and raced wider on the track.
KHAPTIVATA- Near the 600 metres, raced ungenerously, hung out and raced wide on the track.
OUR MAGIC MADGE- Approaching the 600 metres, hung out to race extremely wide on the track. Rider reported that the mare had been struck by a clod and resented this early in the race. Nevertheless, given its record, a further warning was placed on the mare and if it was to perform in a similar manner, a bar may be imposed.
