SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
From Quilpie 10.05.14
Stewards interviewed trainer T. Austin regarding the nomination, acceptance and scratching of five of his horses at this meeting. He stated that he had nominated and accepted with the intention of running all horses at this meeting. He added that unfortunately his truck underwent some major repairs during the week and due to some complications with parts, the vehicle was not available, leaving him with no way of transporting his runners to this meeting. He further added that he had advised regional stewards of this matter and has since provided stewards with evidence of the mechanical work carried out on his vehicle. Stewards accepted the explanation.
Race 4
Stewards questioned apprentice J. Brand (WIGPOOL) with regards to her holding a wide position from the 600m until rounding the home turn. She stated that after getting her mount out of the kickback in the early stages that she felt the ground wider on the track was superior and for this reason raced in a wide position. Stewards advised apprentice Brand that they felt she had erred by holding such a wide position on the track when there was an opportunity to race closer to the rail, however after considering her inexperience and her limited race riding took no further action.
Race 1: Jeffrey Tuite Memorial Maiden Plate 1000m
The start of this race was delayed when USUAL TRICKS (L. Tilley) was reluctant to be loaded.
MASTER FARALON (M. McGillivray) knuckled on jumping away.
MAIDONRICHES (W. Doyle) and ARVAKUR (S. Egan) were slow to begin.
USUAL TRICKS jumped awkwardly and made contact with the left barrier gate.
Shortly after the start, ARVAKUR laid in and made contact with MASTER FARALON.
Near the 800m RAGING RUPERT shifted in when racing greenly and was steadied from the heels of BLUE LASS (J. Brand), when being corrected, RAGING RUPERT then shifted out and inconvenienced ARVAKUR which was steadied.
Leaving the 700m USUAL TRICKS shifted in and bumped LUCKY DUCKY (F. Elliott) which became unbalanced.
MAIDONRICHES laid out rounding the home turn.
When questioned regarding the performance of ARVAKUR, jockey S. Egan stated that after being slow to begin his mount raced in restricted room near the 800m and lost ground. He added that ARVAKUR responded to his riding from rounding the home turn and finished the race off well.
L. Tilley reported that his left knee had struck the barriers on jumping away and that while he had a laceration to that area he did not require medical assistance and was fit to continue riding.
Race 2: Wilkes Building Services QTIS Benchmark 60 Handicap 1000m
Correct weight was delayed for stewards to establish if COME BY OFTEN (L. Appo), which did not jump with the field and took no part in the race, was afforded a fair start. After taking evidence from jockey L. Appo, trainer G. Currie and viewing the patrol footage, stewards established that when the start was effected COME BY OFTEN stood in the gates and refused to jump with the field. As stewards were satisfied that COME BY OFTEN was afforded a fair start they declared that horse a runner and gave correct weight on the Judges semaphored numbers. Trainer G. Currie was advised that COME BY OFTEN must obtain a further barrier certificate before being permitted to race again.
GENTLE GOOD NIGHT (S. Egan) began awkwardly striking the left barrier gate and lost ground.
Near the 700m KBENGAL (J. Brand) was eased and lost ground when tightened for room between MUNDO NOVA (C. Rogers) and FOUR JOY (Z. Scullie) which shifted in despite the efforts of the rider.
When questioned regarding the performance of GENTLE GOODNIGHT which performed below market expectations, jockey S. Egan stated that the mare was slow to begin and was unable to muster its customary early speed. He added that his mount was under pressure throughout and failed to respond to his riding. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3: Peter Moody Benchmark 65 Handicap 1400m
CRAWFISH (G. Steele) was slow to begin.
RAGING TO WIN (F. Elliott) and OH SO CLOSE (M. McGillivray) raced wide throughout
Approaching the home turn ZIPOLOITE (L. Tilley) was restrained from the heels of BELLESPY (W. Doyle). At a subsequent inquiry, stewards on considering the patrol footage and the riders evidence could not establish if ZIPOLITE had established a run to the inside of BELLSPY at that stage and therefore could not apportion blame to any one rider.
Near the 400m LAPEL (Z. Scullie) was retired from the race by the rider and a short distance later collapsed. The club veterinary surgeon reported that the horse was deceased on his arrival and had suffered a major cardiovascular episode.
Trainer J. Patterson expressed his disappointment in the performance of LA CLOISONNE and felt that the mare may not have backed up from its win the previous week at Quilpie and that it was his intention to send the horse for a spell.
Race 4: Gordon Lines Memorial Class B Handicap 1200m
ARNHEM LAND (R. Kerwin) was slow to begin.
FORCED SALUTE (Q. Krogh) and YOUTHFUL PRINCE (Z. Scullie) raced wide throughout.
GRAND SUITE (L. Tilley) laid out under pressure in the home straight.
R. Kerwin reported that ARNHEM LAND could not sprint early and had a tendency to hang in. She added that her mount resented the kickback from the track and was reluctant to stretch out. She further stated that she had indicated to the trainer that ARNHEM LAND would be suited to more firmer tracks than that of today. Trainer T. Elmes subsequently reported that the gelding had sustained a laceration high up on off hind leg but was not lame.
Stewards in reviewing this race established that the race had been started from the 1100m and not the 1200m as programmed. Stewards acting under the provisions of LR71 were satisfied that this occurrence did not materially prejudice the chance of the runners in this race and therefore ruled that the race had been run over the correct distance. All trainers in the race were contacted and advised accordingly. A report will be made to the Chief Steward at Racing Queensland with regards to this matter.
Race 5: XXXX Gold Newmarket Open Handicap 1200m
Trainer T. Austin was reprimanded for presenting PRIMED with incorrect gear.
TESTASCANA (J. Brand) was slow to begin.
Leaving the 1100m BIG BAD JOEL (M. McGillivray) was steadied when tightened for room between ELLIE LAVIE and PRIMED (S. Egan) which shifted in and away from REGAL PRINCE (J. Rudd) which was taken in by OLYMPIA’S FLAME. L. Tilley the rider of OLYMPIA’S FLAME was reprimanded for shifting ground when not sufficiently clear.
Near the 900m ADRIATIC OCEAN was steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of REGALPRINCE.
LONE ASSASSIN raced wide throughout.
A post race veterinary examination of LONE ASSASSIN revealed the gelding to be lame in the off hind leg. Trainer L. Baker will be advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for LONE ASSASSIN before racing again.
