SmithSUPPLEMENTARY REPORTFROM COOKTOWN AMATEUR TURF CLUB, SATURDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2019Stewards today finalised an inquiry into an incident which occurred during the running of Race 4 the Cooktown Food & Ice Services/Musgrave Roadhouse/Seaview Motel Class B Handicap over 1290m. Verbal statements from App. R Shred and App. A Bakos and a written statement from Jockey M Kai, and available patrol footage revealed that WHINGING WIFE faltered when in clear running near the 400m and fell, dislodging App. Shred. MADEMOISELLE POLLY (App. Bakos) and THE FRONTIER, (Jockey Kai) which were following were unable to avoid the fallen runner and were both severely checked, dislodging those two riders. A subsequent veterinary examination revealed WHINGING WIFE to have sustained a compound fracture to its off foreleg.All three riders were subsequently transported to Cooktown Hospital to be stabilised prior to being airlifted to Cairns Base Hospital for further treatment. Based on the statements provided by the three riders, the video evidence and their own observations, Stewards were satisfied that the incident occurred solely as a result of the injury sustained in running by WHINGING WIFE and was not the fault of any rider in the race, and as such, concluded the inquiry.GENERALDue to the unsettled weather in the region, trainers’ explanations for late rider declarations were accepted by stewards.Race 1: 1300 RIDE SHARE QTIS 3YO H'CAP – 1250MRounding the 1000m turn KODAI (F Edwards) which was improving to the outside of Cactoblastis (P Cullen) shifted in taking that gelding in, resulting in tightening to the running REGAL HEART (S Wilson) which had to be restrained. Jockey Edwards was reprimanded for careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a).MT PETER MISS – Slowly into stride after beginning awkwardly. Lost its near fore plate in running.Race 2: GREAT NORTHERN BREWING CO QTIS 2YO H'CAP – 950MTENNESSEE BOY – Laid out rounding the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. A post-race swab sample was obtained.CLEAVER GREENE – Had a tendency to lay out rounding the home turn.GRACEFUL JEN – Raced greenly in the early stages. Laid in near the 600m.TWURKENITUP – Fractious in the barriers. Jockey S. Wilson reported that the filly had got its tongue over the bit in running.Race 3: CCW CABINET WORKS OPEN H'CAP – 950MVIA BALCIANO – Broke through the barriers after being fractious, quickly restrained, inspected by the veterinarian and passed fit to start prior to being reloaded.EXCEEDINGLY KOOL – Jockey B. Thomson was fined the sum of $300 for using the whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m.Race 4: LOOK SHARP PAINTING & DECORATING MAIDEN H'CAP – 1250MCREAM TART was a late scratching at 3:59 pm after refusing to load and delaying the start. Trainer T. Rowe was advised that the filly would be required to obtain one further barrier certificate prior to being permitted to race again. Prior to the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on CREAM TART be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 3:59 pm:14 cents in the dollar for the win #819 cents in the dollar for place of winner #818 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #4 RIO – Raced wide in the early and middle stages.BENVENUTI – Slowly away. Inconvenienced near the 100m by another runner which shifted in.BADBOY CHARLIE – Slowly away. Laid in badly in the home straight despite the efforts of Jockey B. Thomson. Trainer P. Rowe was advised that the gelding would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to its next start.MY GIRL POPPY – Shifted in near the 100m, inconveniencing another runner. Rider S. Kaya was advised of his obligations to straighten his mounts when they are shifting ground. Race 5: STYLES ELECTRIX CLASS 6 PLATE – 1250MBACHELOR’S ART – Restrained soon after jumping to obtain a position closer to the inside running rail. Laid in rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight.STARENA – Jockey S. Pawsey reported that the mare had changed stride near the 500m, making heavy contact with the running rail on several occasions and had never travelled from that point. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.RULER – Rider S. Wilson fined the sum of $200 for using the whip on 8 occasions prior to the 100m.ROSE CLIP – Reluctant to stretch out from the 600m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have a poor post-race recovery and be lame in both fore limbs. Trainer A Bailey was advised a Veterinary certificate of fitness would be required before the mare was again permitted to start in a race.Race 6: CAIRNS HARDWARE CLASS 3 PLATE – 1400MSHUNTER – Raced wide rounding the first turn. Shifted in marginally near the 500m, inconveniencing a runner to its inside. Rider E. Cass was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Restrained off heels near the 250m. CANDY GIRL – Raced ungenerously for a short distance passing the 1000m.HIGH BEAM – Inconvenienced when marginally tightened for room near the 500m. Jockey S. Pawsey, when questioned in relation to his riding of the mare, advised that in hindsight he may have erred in judgment by committing to a run to the outside of SHE’S NIC’N OFF rounding the home turn and this decision resulted in him being placed in restricted room for the majority of the home straight and being unable to fully test the mare.Race 7: CLARKE TRENCHING BENCHMARK 60 H'CAP – 950MSWEET TASTE – Raced wide for the majority of the event.MAGNITUDE LAD – Slowly away. Inconvenienced when tightened between runners soon after jumping.COUNTLESS ROCK – Collapsed post-race en-route to the race day tie-ups. Post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have succumbed to an internal haemorrhage. A post-mortem sample was obtained from the mare.LITTLE STRYKER – Slowly away.SER SER SCHON – Dislodged Jockey S. Sheargold on pulling up. Jockey Sheargold declared himself free of injury.KISS THE BOSS – Fractious in the raceday tie-up, inspected by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Performed below market expectations.
