Race Day Stewards’ Report

Cairns Thoroughbreds

Date: 21/03/2020

Weather: Fine

Track: Soft 5

Rail: +2m from 575m-325m True Remainder

Stewards Panel: C Warren (Chairman), P Lane (Birdcage)

Officials:  E Maloney (Vet/ Swab Collection Official), P Kennedy (Starter), R Ballard (Judge), B Gray (Clerk of Scales), Stewards (Bookmakers Supervisor).

GENERAL
As a result of the prevailing government restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 virus, jockeys’ access to weight reducing facilities has been curtailed and therefore stewards acting under the Racing Queensland overweight policy permitted the following weight variations:

Race 1- SER SER SCHON (S. Sheargold) +1kg
Race 4- IRISH EHART (S. Sheargold) +1kg
Race 5- DON’T WE LOVE IT (F. Edwards) +0.5kg

Apprentice E Cass was reprimanded under the provisions of AR143 for failing to present her winning rides book to the Stewards before the race meeting.

Race 1 – Backpacker Shack Benchmark 65 Handicap (950m)

VOLTAIC- Began awkwardly and lost ground.

SER SER SCHON- Wide throughout. Inclined to lay in over the concluding stages.

Declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow App. S Gittos to view footage of the start to ascertain whether there was grounds to be declared a non-runner. After viewing the footage App. Gittos was satisfied and correct weight declared on the Judge’s placings.

Race 2 – Russell Signage Maiden Plate (1250m)

BENVENUTI- Stood flat footed losing considerable ground. Trainer F Weiland was advised the gelding will be required to obtain one (1) further barrier certificate before again being permitted to start in a race. Improved onto heels approaching the 800m having to be restrained.

Passing the 300m SCARAMOUCHE (Jockey C Jokic) shifted in marginally before being straightened. Simultaneously RIO (Jockey S Pawsey), which was racing ungenerously, shifted out despite the efforts of its rider. As a result of these shifts FURE (Jockey S Kaya) was placed in restricted room and checked losing ground. After hearing evidence from the riders involved and viewing the patrol footage Stewards were of the opinion that this was a raing incident and fault could not be attributed to any one rider.

RIO- A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a minor laceration to the near hind fetlock in running.

Race 3 – Walkabout Backpackers Class B Handicap (1250m)

TAKING CHARGE- Shifted in on jumping hampering another runner.

MY GIRL POPPY- Hampered by another runner which shifted in on jumping. Hampered by another runner which shifted in passing the 900m. Disappointed for clear running throughout the home straight and went to the line without being fully tested.

VAN GAAL- Shifted in near the 900m hampering another runner. Jockey S Pawsey was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) as a result of this incident. Awkwardly placed on heels and restrained near the 550m when the pace slackened.

AS YA WOOD- Shifted in down the running under hard riding. Jockey G Watson was reminded to exercise greater care and straighten his mount in similar circumstances.

Race 4 – Jills Stationery Benchmark 55 Handicap (1500m)

MAKARIOS- As Jockey W D’Avila unable to ride at todays meeting Jockey S Pawsey was substituted to ride the gelding. Inclined to shift in under pressure throught the home straight.

SHUDAKEPTIM- Due to an administrative error the Official programme did not include blinkers as part of the gelding’s race gear. Stewards permitted the gelding to race in blinkers and Trainer S Horner was advised to follow up with Racing Australia prior to next race start.

PARTY PIES- Fractious in the barrier.
