QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT CAIRNS JOCKEY CLUB MONDAY 2 JANUARY 2023 WEATHER – OVERCAST TRACK RATING – SOFT (7) RAIL – 1M: 1400-W/POST; TRUE REMAINDER PENETROMETER – N/A OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – P. Kennedy GENERALDue to a wet section outside the running rail at the 950-metre chute where the barriers would need to be manoeuvred, stewards in consultation with the Cairns Jockey Club had the barriers moved forward approximately 10 metres with all races out of the chute to be approximately 940 metres. As jockeys F. Edwards and D. Smith were not riding at today’s meeting due to illness, replacements were made as per steward’s summary. Both riders were advised they must provide a medical clearance prior to their next race ride. Race 1: LINDON REED MORTGAGE CHOICE QTIS Two-Year-OldMaiden Handicap 940 metres JUST JONESY - As jockey N. Day was delayed arriving on course due to transportation difficulties, he was replaced by M. Abe. Began awkwardly and lost ground. Shifted out shortly after the start tightening JAAKUNA. KING CANUTE – Slow to begin. Made the 750 metre crossing awkwardly. Tightened for room near the 500 metres by SHIHO which shifted in when racing greenly causing KING CANUTE to clip its heels and blunder. TURN BIRD – Began awkwardly and shifted out bumping SHIHO on the hindquarters, then shifted in soon after crowding JAAKUNA. JAAKUNA – Slow to begin and shifted out bumping TURN BIRD. Was buffeted between runners shortly after the start. Raced wide rounding the home turn. SHIHO – Bumped on the hind quarters on jumping and was unbalanced.Raced greenly approaching the 500 metres and hung in tightening the running of KING CANUTE which clipped its heels and blundered. When trying to be corrected the saddle shifted to its offside causing rider L. Morrison to lose both irons and being placed at a distinct disadvantage for the remainder of the race. Trainer T. Rowe was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s racing manners. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to its off-hind leg consistent with being galloped on. Trainer T. Rowe was advised he must provide a veterinary clearance prior to SHIHO being permitted to race again. Race 2: CAIRNS CAR BROKERS QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap 940 metres FODOR – Slow to begin. Lost its off-fore plate during running. ARTIE'S LAD – After dwelling at the start shifted out tightening SIMPLY BEANS. WAKE UP SOO – Began awkwardly and shifted in tightening SIMPLY BEANS. SIMPLY BEANS – Slow into stride and tightened for room on jumping. Rider S. Sheargold pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR132(5) in that he used his whip in an excessive manner by striking the gelding 15 times which is one more time than is permitted. Jockey Sheargold was reprimanded. Race 3: POOL STORE PLUS OPEN Handicap 1250 metres DUNATUN – Contacted the gate post on entering the course proper. Was examined by the veterinary surgeon when arrived at the barriers and was cleared to start. Slow to begin. SEA ECHO – Slow to begin and threw its head in the air for a short distance when being urged forward. INCHING CLOSER – Slow to begin. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages. SMART IMAGE – Restrained off heels for a short distance leaving the 400 metres. Race 4: ELDERS REAL ESTATE TABLELANDS Class 6 Handicap 940 metres SOUTHERN SWING – Slow to begin. ENDORSE – Bounded in the air on jumping and lost ground. Restrained off heels for a short distance leaving the 500 metres. Laid in under pressure in the home straight proving difficult to ride. TRIGGER – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority. SOLOMON – Raced wide for the majority. Race 5: CBIS INSURANCE BROKERS RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 Handicap 940 metres GLORIOUS EXPRESS – Slow to begin. PRINCE SHUVEE – The off-side winker became detached from the bridle near the 750 metres. MASTER ORR – Raced wide for the majority of the race.After racing below market expectation trainer M. Dale advised stewardsthat whilst he was not entirely disappointed with its performance today, he does expect the gelding to derive benefit form todays race. Jockey L. Morrison explained that MASTER ORR was dropping back in distance form its previous start and raced wide for the majority and further that it never travelled comfortably throughout the race and failed to respond to her riding when placed under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. MILLAA MISS – Raced wide for the majority of the race. Lost both front plate during running. MACH SEVEN – Raced wide for the majority of the race. TICTOC TICTOC – Raced wide for the majority of the race. Race 6: R & J BATTERIES BENCHMARK 55 Handicap 1400 metres SWANKY SUE – Slow into stride. PETRILLO (NZ) – Slow into stride. TOFF ROCKS – Over-raced in the early and middle stages. Shifted wider leaving the 200 metres to obtain clear running. FEMALE OFFICER – Over-raced in the early stages. WELL CHARRED – Over-raced in the early and middle stages. Race 7: GREAT NORTHERN BREWING CO. Maiden Handicap 1250 metres GULF OF LION – Slow to begin. Commenced to over-race and improved into a narrow run to the inside of CLASSIC CHANCE which shifted in on the point of the turn near the 500 metres and was restrained. LORD POWER – Began awkwardly and was restrained from its wide barrier to take a position closer to the inside running rail. Restrained near the 500 metres when inconvenienced by GULF OF LION which was restrained. CONQUERED JOURNEY – Shifted out near the 900 metres bumping BELLAS’ IN COMMAND. Hung out rounding the home turn. Raced greenly in the home straight and shifted in abruptly near the 150 metres crowding TO BOOGIE. Trainer R. Miller was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s racing manners. BELLA'S IN COMMAND – Bumped the 900 metres and was unbalanced. MAKANUI – Over-raced in the middle stages. CLASSIC CHANCE – Shifted in near the 500 metres when not fully clear of GULF OF LION which improved to its inside and had to be restrained. Whilst stewards noted the particulars of this incident rider J. Taylor was nonetheless reprimanded and advised to show greater care in similar circumstances. TO BOOGIE – Shifted in abruptly near the 150 metres when crowded for room. Raced wide for the majority of the race. IMPEACHER – Raced wide for the majority of the race. Race 8: ELITE SECURITY PERSONNEL Class 3 Handicap 1250 metre CUNNAMULLA – Began awkwardly and lost ground. JOURNEY OF SONG – Restrained off heels near the 900 metres. MY SISTER SAL – Over-raced in the early stages. PLAGIARIZED – Laid out under pressure over the concluding stages. DARK REBEL – Raced wide without cover for the majority of the race.
