STEWARDS REPORT

DALBY TURF CLUB – THURSDAY 7 JUNE 2018

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – R. Hitchener
Stewards – B. Cooke, J. Childs, T. Reed
Clerk of Scales – S. Fahey
Judge – J. Moody, I. Thompson, K. Hauff
Veterinarian – M. Berghofer
Swab Attendants – E. Hodges
Starter – P. Brennan
Stewards Secretary – M. Weir

Race 1: DINGO AUSTRALIA BENCHMARK 65 H’CAP – 1400M

RULER’S PRIDE – Steadied from heels for some distance approaching the 800m. When questioned by Stewards, jockey S. Bogenhuber reported that her mount was inclined to lay in rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight and, as a result, she had some difficulty shifting that runner to the outside of heels in the early stages of the straight to secure clear running.

MACHU PICCHU – Overraced in the early stages.

ARGYLL BAY – Began awkwardly, and was buffeted between runners shortly after the start. Stewards questioned Apprentice C. Bayliss regarding his riding in the early stages following a concern raised to Stewards by the horse’s trainer, Mr. P. Butterworth with respect to the horse settling further back in the field than he had anticipated. Apprentice Bayliss advised that, after being slightly hampered at the start in the early stages, he formed the view that he would have insufficient pace to cross the runners to his inside, and he therefore elected to allow the horse to settle one off the fence in a rearward position. Apprentice Bayliss added that, in his opinion, if he had continued to ride his mount along in the early stages, it would have resulted in him racing wide without cover throughout. He further added that during the middle stages of the race the gelding was inclined to race somewhat ungenerously, and changed stride on a number of occasions, which also contributed to him settling further back in the field than anticipated. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 2: DALBY FLORIST MAIDEN PLATE – 1400M

EDDIEADO – Tightened for room on jumping away.

BULLTRUCK – Steadied from heels after being crossed approaching the 1000m.

CLOWN IN THE MOON – Raced ungenerously whilst being restrained during the middle stages. Raced wide without cover throughout. Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight.

IT’SGLORIAMA – Hung out from the 600m until straightening.

Race 3: DALBY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1000M

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards viewed the patrol footage of the start to ascertain whether SMARTY JACK had been afforded a fair start. After viewing the films, it was established that SMARTY JACK turned its head into the adjoining barrier as the start was effected and, as a result, lost considerable ground. As Stewards were satisfied that the reason for SMARTY JACK turning its head in the barrier and losing ground was due to its own manners, the horse was declared a runner and correct weight was declared on the Judge’s numbers.

DAISY’S APART – Jumped a bare section of the track at the 800m, and hung out from that point.

EUCHI – Slow to begin. Apprentice R. Goldsbury reported that her mount hung out throughout, which prevented her from fully testing the filly in the home straight.

SIOUXSIE – Began awkwardly and bumped another runner.

SUNRISE GOLD – Hung out rounding the turn near the 600m and shifted wider on the track.

Race 4: HART PLUMBING CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1000M

KEEN INSTINCT – A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which performed below expectation, revealed a laceration to the off fore leg which required treatment by the on course veterinarian. Trainer Mr. P. Butterworth was advised that the gelding will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

FIVE SPICES – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

CLOSE ENOUGH – Laid out in the middle stages.

FIRST BID – Turned its head on jumping away and, as a result, lost ground at the start.

Race 5: MIKE & VAL KELLY FILLIES AND MARES BENCHMARK 58 H’CAP – 1200M

BUBBA ROCKER – Jockey B. Stower reported that it was not her intention for the mare to race as far forward as it did today however, after beginning well, she was able to secure a forward position without pressuring her mount.

WHERE’S SNIPPY – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

SHEMAGICSMY WORLD – Bumped heavily on jumping away. Raced 3 wide with cover throughout.

Race 6: JTW CLEANING SERVICE COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES BENCHMARK 58 H’CAP – 1200M

PICK OF THE PUBS – Began awkwardly. Stewards questioned Trainer D. Reynolds in relation to the seemingly improved performance of the gelding which was subject to a significant market move today before finishing a narrow second. Mr. Reynolds advised that 3 starts ago at Bundaberg the gelding performed only fairly which he attributed to the sand racing surface on that occasion. He further added that 2 starts ago the horse finished down the track in a race which was won by a horse which, in his opinion, has significant ability. He went on to say that at its most recent start, the gelding was forced to race wide, and raced fairly on that occasion. Mr. Reynolds added that, in his opinion, when racing today at a venue where the horse has previously raced well, and due to it being down a class, he had expected an improved showing. Mr. Reynolds further added that whilst he did support the horse, it was late in betting at a price at the bottom of the market, and therefore the significant betting action on the gelding was not stable influenced. Stewards noted the explanation.

DAMN FINE – Connections advised that it would be the intention for the gelding to be ridden more forward today if circumstances permit. The gelding was subsequently ridden aggressively in the early stages before settling in a position worse than midfield. Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

TURKANA – Raced wide with cover throughout. Apprentice C. Gallagher reported that his mount hung in throughout.

OUR ROCK O’REILLY – Trainer G. Richardson was fined $100 for failing to produce the horse’s Thoroughbred Identification Card.

Race 7: CRITERION HOTEL BENCHMARK 58 H’CAP – 1788M

ANNIHILATION – Bumped by another runner exiting the home straight on the first occasion.

SALUTE THE PRINCE – Jockey N. Tomizawa could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance other than it may not have stretched out due to the Good 3 track surface. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

REAL MONTE – Jumped in the air at the start and lost ground.

BOWIES BAYCONI – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.

CAN HE RAP – Jockey B. Stower reported that the gelding may have choked down during the event and may benefit from the addition of a tongue-tie to its gear.
