Stewards inquired into the post-race condition of SMARTY JACK, which when returning to the mounting yard, appeared to have had lacerations both on the near and off- side. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding had received lacerations to the near and off-side lateral thorax, which in the professional opinion of the on course veterinarian, were consistent with the use of spurs. Upon a search of Jockey J. Kings race gear, stewards found, and seized, spurs that in their opinion, appeared to be modified and therefore were not deemed suitable for use by Stewards. Upon questioning, Jockey King acknowledged that the spurs in question, were those which he had used when as the rider of SMARTY JACK in this event. Jockey J. King was fined $500 under the provisions of AR.125 for using modified spurs that were not approved by the stewards. Further, Jockey King pleaded guilty to a charge under AR134 in that as the rider of SMARTY JACK, he had used his spurs in an improper manner. Jockey King’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of one calendar month, to commence midnight the 8th February 2020 and to conclude midnight the 8th March 2020, Jockey King was advised of his right to an internal review.
