Race 1: HENRY (DOC) SMILES MEMORIAL CLASS 2 PLATE – 1200M
The start of this race was delayed to enable the broadcast of an interstate event.
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to enable Stewards to consider an objection lodged immediately following the race by K. Yoshida, the rider of 3rd placegetter RESONARE, against WAIT A MINUTE (G. Geran) being placed 2nd, alleging interference near the 400m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the patrol footage, Stewards found that whilst WAIT A MINUTE laid in approaching the 400m forcing RESONARE inwards at that point, they could not be satisfied that the interference suffered to RESONARE was sufficient to uphold the protest bearing in mind the long head margin between those runners at the conclusion of the race. Stewards therefore dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge’s semaphored numbers.
FAKE TAN – Jockey W. O’Connell’s saddle slipped at the start which placed him at a significant disadvantage throughout. Raced wide in the middle stages.
HEART ATTACK – Steadied to avoid the heels of MASTER OF NORWAY (R. Goldsbury) which shifted in near the 800m. Jockey R. Goldsbury was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in the future. Had difficulty securing clear running over the concluding stages.
WAIT A MINUTE – Began awkwardly and made contact with the outside barrier partition. On return to scale, jockey G. Geran reported that he suffered some minor discomfort in his foot as a result of this incident. Overraced and also raced wide in the middle stages. Bumped by another runner near the 900m and became unbalanced for a short distance. Laid in near the 400m forcing RESONARE (K. Yoshida) inwards which in turn resulted in SIZZLING SUN (A. Fancourt) being tightened for room and losing ground. Trainer M. Kropp was advised that a warning will be placed on the gelding.
BOLD SENSATION – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Overraced in the middle stages. Jockey R. Wiggins could offer no explanation for the mare’s seemingly disappointing performance today.
FANTASAY – Bumped another runner near the 900m.
SIZZLING SUN – Tightened for room and lost ground near the 400m.
RATHER SALUBRIOUS – Raced wide in the middle stages. Steadied from heels for a short distance leaving the 600m when WAIT A MINUTE laid in.
Race 2: FERMOR PLUMBING QTIS 2YO H’CAP – 1100M
REAL FINE WINE – Reared at the start and lost ground. Laid in across heels approaching the 600m and, as a result, had to be restrained for a short distance. Shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages.
SASSY ENUFF – Began awkwardly and made contact with the inside barrier partition.
MAGIC IN ME – Raced wide without cover throughout.
FUNKY BEAT – Blundered of its own accord leaving the 600m. Apprentice Z. White pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 132(7)(a)(ii) in that she excessively used her whip prior to the 100m. Apprentice Z. White was fined $400. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration Apprentice White’s poor recent record in relation to this rule.
ROSETTES – Steadied to avoid the heels of SASSY ENUFF which shifted in leaving the 1000m. Laid out rounding the home turn.
OLD KENT ROAD – Began awkwardly. On return to scale, jockey Beau-Dene Appo advised that, in his opinion, his mount became awkward in its action from the 800m and, for this reason, he elected to retire the filly from the event. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly revealed no apparent abnormalities. The trainer’s representative was advised that the filly must barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to next racing, however Stewards also requested the stable representative to report to Stewards should anything come to light in the coming days regarding the horse’s post-race recovery.
Race 3: MICHAEL & VAL KELLY QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP – 1100M
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards viewed the patrol footage to ascertain whether SPINNING SPIRIT had been afforded a fair start. After viewing the films, Stewards found that SPINNING SPIRIT had reared simultaneously with the start being effected and, as a result, got its leg over the barrier partition, was unable to jump with the remainder of the field, and took no part in the race. As Stewards were satisfied that the sole reason for this incident was the filly’s own barrier manners, they declared the horse a confirmed runner. Trainer J. Hanna was advised that he filly will require a further barrier certificate prior to next racing.
WHITS END – When questioned by Stewards in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance, trainer G. Taylor advised that, after beginning poorly, the gelding settled in a position further back in the field which, in his opinion, disadvantaged the gelding as it performs better when able to obtain a position further forward in its races. He added that the gelding may not have been suited by its position on the fence today.
SHOTGUN SUNNY – The gelding, which rubbed its hip in the float enroute to the track, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination upon arriving on course, and was passed fit to start. Laid in for a short distance near the 800m. Raced ungenerously for a short distance approaching the 600m and again leaving the 400m. Had difficulty obtaining clear running upon entering the home straight, and shifted in to secure clear running.
ZARAGIGI – Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. Raced 3 wide without cover in the early and middle stages. Raced greenly throughout. Trainer L. Roche was advised that a warning will be placed on the filly’s racing manners.
DANINA – Began awkwardly and made contact with STRYKING PRINCESS to its inside.
Race 4: GLORIA HOSKINS MEMORIAL/G.J. GARDNER HOMES QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP – 1100M
The start of this race was initially delayed to enable the broadcast of an interstate event.
The start was further delayed when ADELITA ROSE proved difficult to load.
BOLD HUNTER – Disappointed for a run near the 200m and shifted out abruptly over the final stages.
SIR WHITTINGTON – Slow to begin.
TAKE A SHINE – Slow to begin.
ADELITA ROSE – Laid in for a short distance approaching the 800m. Laid in leaving the 600m and made contact with BOLD HUNTER. Shifted in over the concluding stages.
EXCEPTIONAL BELLE – Raced keenly throughout. Eased when placed in restricted room over the final stages when ADELITA ROSE (G. Geran) shifted in. Jockey Geran was reprimanded as a result of this incident.
BELLA RUBINO – Jumped in the air at the start and made contact with the outside barrier partition and, as a result, began awkwardly and lost ground. On return to scale, jockey E. Ljung reported some soreness in her left knee as a result of this incident. Forced wider on the track by another runner over the concluding stages.
Race 5: DALBY HANDY MAN MAIDEN PLATE – 1400M
BILL OF RIGHTS – The gelding, which got down in the float enroute to the track and sustained a minor abrasion to its hip, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination upon arriving on course and was passed fit to start.
VINNY VAVOOM – Raced wide without cover in the middle stages. Apprentice M. Savva was fined $300 for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m.
STROKE OF MIDNIGHT – Made contact with the inside barrier partition on jumping away and was slow to begin. Shifted in to secure clear running upon entering the home straight, and was then shifted out by its rider near the 150m to obtain an unimpeded run to the finish.
REAL SMILES – On return to scale, jockey C. Eaton advised that her mount was inclined to lay out in the early stages.
Race 6: DALBY & DISTRICT FRIENDLY SOCIETY DISPENSARY BENCHMARK 58 H’CAP – 2000M
The start of this race was delayed to enable the broadcast of an interstate event.
MAXWELL – Began awkwardly and lost ground. When questioned by Stewards in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance, jockey B. Andrew advised that, in her opinion, the gelding jarred up shortly after jumping and was reluctant to stretch out under hard riding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in its off fore leg. Trainer B. Andrew was advised that the gelding will require a veterinary certificate prior to next racing.
TACTICAL MANUEVER – Stewards acceded to the request of trainer R. Davidson to permit Apprentice N. Fazackerley to ride the mare despite him only claiming ½ kilogram of his 1½ kilogram allowance. Apprentice Fazackerley was fined $300 for failing to claim his full allowance. Began awkwardly. Steadied from heels for a short distance approaching the 500m when REAL ESTATE shifted out.
WESTBROOK WARRIOR – Overraced in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no apparent abnormalties.
CLEAR SAILING – Jockey E. Ljung pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 132(7)(a)(ii) in that she excessively used her whip prior to the 100m. Jockey Ljung’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 5 days to commence at midnight on Sunday 8 March 2020 and conclude at midnight on Friday 13 March 2020. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Ljung’s very poor recent record in relation to this rule.
MOSS GO NOW – As R. Wiggins was to be overweight, S. Bogenhuber was substituted as rider. R. Wiggins was fined $200. Laid in in the home straight.
STELLA’S CHANCE – Overraced in the early and middle stages.
REAL ESTATE – Connections advised that it would be the intention for the horse to be ridden further forward today, with the intention of leading, if circumstances permit. The gelding subsequently settled in a midfield position.
Race 7: WILD RIVER CONCRETE LIGHTNING OPEN H’CAP – 800M
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to enable Stewards to consider an application made by jockey R. Wiggins immediately following the race for BOLD XAVVI to be declared a non-runner, and to further ascertain whether there were grounds to declare a no race. After viewing the patrol footage and hearing evidence from jockey Wiggins and the starter, Mr. I. Henderson, Stewards found that BOLD XAVVI lunged forward in the barrier just prior to the start being effected resulting in its barrier opening prematurely and in an advance of the remainder of the field. For this reason, jockey Wiggins, who believed that he had gained an unfair advantage, immediately restrained his mount which took no competitive part in the race. As Stewards were satisfied that all of the other runners in the event had not been disadvantaged as a result of this incident, and that the starter had effected the start, they were of the opinion that there were insufficient grounds to declare a no race. Stewards were however satisfied that BOLD XAAVI had gained an unfair advantage at the start, and therefore declared the gelding a non-runner acting under the provisions of AR. 204(2). Following the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all monies invested on BOLD XAVVI be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
16 cent in the dollar for the Win #8
15 cent in the dollar for place of winner #8
16 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #1
10 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #9
CAMBOOYA ROCK – Made the turn near the 500m awkwardly.
CASH’N’RUN – Apprentice Z. White pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 132(7)(a)(ii) in that she excessively used her whip prior to the 100m. Apprentice White’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 5 days to commence at midnight on Saturday 7 March 2020, and conclude at midnight on Thursday 12 March 2020. In determining penalty, Stewards were mindful that Apprentice White had been made aware of her breach following Race 2, and that she has a very poor recent record in relation to this rule.
Race 8: PAUL & DAVID WINTER NEWMARKET OPEN H’CAP – 1200M
The start of this race was delayed when RHYMING PUPPET, which became fractious and cast in the barriers, was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 5.18pm. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on RHYMING PUPPET be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
9 cents in the dollar for the Win #1
11 cents in the dollar for place of winner #1
12 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #5
10 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #4
Trainer B. Cavanough was advised that RHYMING PUPPET will require a further barrier certificate prior to next racing.
In this incident, BLUE JEST, which was drawn in the adjoining barrier, was removed and underwent a veterinary examination before being passed fit to start.
