QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT DALBY & NORTHERN DOWNS JOCKEY CLUB SATURDAY 2 MARCH 2024 WEATHER – Fine TRACK RATING – Good 4 RAIL – Out 2.5m from the 600m-300m; True remainder OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – C WarrenStewards – J Childs, E Tickner & D MacDonald GENERAL The commencement of the meeting was delayed approximately 15 minutes when QAS was delayed in arriving on course. Race 1: DALBY ROTARY CLUB / ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE MAIDEN PLATE 1400m Declaration of correct weight was delayed to when Jockey G Cartwright, rider of 3rd placed KAIROS LOUIE, lodged an objection against 2nd placegetter SMOKIN’ DE QUO (Jockey C Bayliss) citing interference throughout the home straight. After taking evidence from both riders and connections of both runners as well as reviewing the patrol footage Stewards determined that the contact between the two runners down the home straight, specifically the bumping rounding the home turn, soon after entering the home straight and leaving the 200m were as a direct result of SMOKIN’ DE QUO being shifted wider in an effort to obtain clear running in the first instance and laying out away from another runner in the latter and as such that the interference could be solely attributed to that runner as well as determining, with consideration to the margin and the manner in which both runners finished that event off, that the interference did have a tangible effect on the placings and as such upheld the protest, amending the placings accordingly. AS THE DAYS GO BY- Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the middle stages. CASINO CAT- Slow to begin. Held up rounding the home turn. Improved onto heels near the 50m. JIMMY GIGGLE- Performed disappointingly. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which reveal some minor upper-respiratory sounds. Trainer L Hatch advised connections would now consider the geldings immediate racing future with consideration to be given to retirement from racing. TIME FOR JACK- Laid out under pressure near the 100m. APPROVAL- Raced keenly when crossed near the 1000m. App A Donald advised that, in her opinion, the gelding may have resented the tongue tie in running. KAIROS LOUIE (NZ)- Raced wide for the majority. Bumped rounding the home turn and soon after straightening. Laid in and bumped approaching the 200m. Bumped again leaving the 200m. SMOKIN' DE QUO- Shifted out in an effort to obtain clear running bumping another runner rounding the home turn and again soon after straightening. Laid out and bumped approaching the 200m. Shifted out and away from another runner and bumped leaving the 200m. Race 2: LEE VOLK JEWELLERS / BUNYA VISTA MAIDEN PLATE 1400m AMONG US- Bumped on jumping. DUSTYIAM- Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. MERLOT- Raced wide for the majority. CHIEF BY- Began awkwardly. OLD SALT- Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. SUPER QUICK- Bumped on jumping. LILIPOP- Raced wide for the majority. Race 3: ROCKY'S TREE SERVICE / DALBY RURAL SUPPLIES BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1400m SUBSTITUTION- App C Sutherland was reminded of his obligations under the provisions of AR131(b). DAZZLING FLASH- Stable representative Ms L Sears advised the mare would now likely be sent for an immediate spell having come to the end of its preparation. TROPIC SANDS- Improved onto heels when marginally crowded leaving the 500m having to be restrained. DRAGON PINS- Laid in under pressure down the running. Performed below market expectations. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which revealed some upper respiratory sounds and mild heat stress. Jockey J Huxtable advised that, in his opinion the gelding may have come to the end of its preparation. RUBY'S LAD- Jockey A Allen was reprimanded under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(i) for his use of the whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100m. Laid in under pressure down the running. When asked to comment on the improved performance Trainer P Wallace advised that as the gelding was second-up in the preparation the stable had expected an improved performance after taking fitness from its previous run and with the easier run in transit in todays event he was not all together surprised by the winning performance. MARCADA- Raced wide for the majority. Race 4: MORT & CO QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1100m GALWAY HUSSLER- Fractious in the barrier. Trainer C Geran was advised a warning will be placed on the fillies barrier manners as a result. App C Sutherland advised on returning to scale that he was experiencing some minor soreness in his right hip as a result of the fillies barrier behaviour. Raced wide for the majority. Performed below market expectations. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which revealed the filly to be exhibiting mild signs of heat stress. Stable representative G Geran advised that, in his opinion, the filly would derive a significant fitness benefit from todays event. CATALYSE- Raced wide for the majority. SPEEDY GRACE- Jockey C Bayliss was severely reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) for careless riding in that he did direct his mount out to obtain clear running and in doing so made heavy contact with CRYPT DE PIN, taking that runner wider on the track passing the 400m. Jockey C Bayliss was admonished my Stewards and advised that the employ of such tactics could be construed as reckless and to ensure he refrains from similar actions in the future. In determining penalty Stewards noted that the interference, whilst notable, was largely minor in nature. Laid in under pressure own the running. CRYPT DE PIN- Bumped and taken wider on the track passing the 400m. BLACK COUNTRY- Momentarily steadied when marginally crowded approaching the 700m. Laid in under pressure down the running. Race 5: HENRY FAMILY LIGHTNING BENCHMARK 75 HANDICAP 1000m POLYLITHIC (NZ)- Laid out rounding the home turn before soon after being taken in by another runner. Performed below market expectations. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. GLOBAL CITIZEN- Over-raced when being restrained in an effort to obtain cover approaching the 800m, became awkwardly placed on heels passing the 800m as a result. AL PAL'S GAL- Bumped on jumping. ICED- Bumped on jumping. Raced wide for the majority. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a laceration to its near hind which required veterinary treatment. RUSHEEN- Bumped on jumping. Held up rounding the home turn. SHOCK AND AWE- Laid out under pressure down the running. LATENIGHTTOUGHGUY- Began awkwardly and was slow into stride. BRING ME KASH- Began awkwardly and bumped. Taken wider rounding the home turn before being shifted in taking POLYLITHIC in as a result. Jockey D Smith was advised to exercise greater care and ensure he does not dictate or direct the line of other runners in similar circumstances. Laid in under pressure down the running. Raced wide for the majority. Race 6: G.J.GARDNER HOMES DALBY & CHINCHILLA NEWMARKET OPEN HANDICAP 1200m Declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Stewards, and App S Callow (TARA JASMINE) to view footage of the start. After viewing footage all parties were satisfied that all runners were afforded a fair start and correct weight was declared on the Judges semaphored numbers. NED'S GULLY- Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after begin kicked by another horse behind the barriers and was passed fit to start. Bumped on jumping. Laid in under pressure down the running, becoming awkwardly placed on heels approaching the 100m, having to be corrected by its rider. OVIDIUS- Connections advised instructions would be to not use the whip on the gelding. This was advertised by way of oncourse announcement and social media address. Held up rounding the home turn. TARA JASMINE- Stood flat footed and lost ground. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which revealed a small abrasion above the left eye. Trainer P Minter was advised the mare would require a further barrier certificate prior to again being permitted to start in a race. I PROMISE YOU- Bumped on jumping, shifted out and bumped a further runner. Raced keenly when crossed near the 900m. CRACKER ESSGEE- Shifted out and bumped on jumping. Race 7: MASTER HIRE / LDC MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000m SERAPUS- Began awkwardly. Raced wide for the majority. Performed below market expectations. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. Following the running of this event App Webb was indisposed due to aggravating an existing injury with replacements permitted as per Stewards race day summary. App Webb was advised a medical clearance from a treating specialist would be required prior to again being permitted to race ride again. NOBLE VALOUR- Laid in under pressure down the running. PREVARICATE- Slow into stride before becoming awkwardly placed on heels soon after. Raced wide for the majority. NAVILLUS HELLFIRE- Momentarily held up on entering the home straight. HONEY QUEEN- Stewards permitted Jockey M Wishart to be substituted as rider of the filly when Jockey L Tilley was suffer some ill effects of dehydration in efforts to fulfil the allotted weight. Given the circumstances of the incident no further action was taken other than to reprimand Jockey Tilly pursuant to AR190(3). Laid out under pressure down the running. SMASH 'N' GRAB- Shifted in passing the 800m when not fully clear of JUST FOR PEASURE. Jockey J Huxtable was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) as a result of this incident. JUST FOR PLEASURE- Restrained off heels passing the 800m. CRAIGLEA THERA- Stewards permitted App N Olzard to ride the filly without claiming given the late notice of the ride. When queried regarding the performance Trainer K Johnston in all the fillies recent races it has been obliged to race excessively wide for the majority, noting todays easier run as a determining factor in the performance, adding that the filly had been pleasing in her recent work. Race 8: WESTERN DOWNS REGIONAL COUNCIL MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000m TANTALISING- Laid in and away from another runner passing the 600m, bumping a further runner and lost ground. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which no significant abnormalities. TOY DANDY- Checked from heels passing the 500m when marginally taken wider. FOSS- Began awkwardly and was slow into stride becoming awkwardly placed on heels soon after. STARRY GIRL- Tightened after being bumped and was obliged to steady passing the 700m. BASIL'S GIFT- Began awkwardly. Shifted in marginally passing the 600m before being corrected and then became awkwardly placed on heels having to be restrained. MAKE HASTE- Shifted in passing the 500m when not fully clear of TOY DANDY which was obliged to check. Jockey K Yoshida was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) as a result of this incident. In determining penalty Stewards noted that whilst Jockey Yoshida had commenced to shift into the line of running of TOY DANDY when not fully clear, TOY DANDY had also shifted out marginally at that time as a result of SPRESSI shifting out marginally to the inside. As such, the interference could not solely be attributed to Jockey Yoshida’s actions. SPRESSI- Laid out marginally passing the 500m. Race 9: CRITERION HOTEL DALBY BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1000m THIS IS ONE- Shifted out and bumped. ORACOLO- Slow to begin and became awkwardly placed on heels soon after. Bumped the inside running rail near the 300m. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which revealed the gelding to be exhibiting signs of mild heat stress. LIMITED REALITY- Bumped heavily passing the 200m. Raced wide for the majority. Performed below market expectations. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which revealed no significant abnormalities. INVINCIBILUS- Began awkwardly. SEA COMMITS- Held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight. ARABIAN FOX- Stewards permitted App N Olzard to claim only 1/2kg of her allowance on the filly given the late notification of the ride. FLY LIKE HELEN- Shifted out under pressure passing the 200m and bumped heavily. App R Thorburn was reprimanded as a result of this incident and advised to exercise greater effort sooner to correct his mounts in similar circumstances. VULTURE STREET- Shifted in and bumped on jumping. Race 10:ARROW ENERGY / POWERLINK BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1000m BOSTON CITY- Stewards accepted the reasons for the late declaration of rider on the gelding tendered by Trainer G Richardson. Was late arriving on course due to transport difficulties. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Pre-race blood samples were taken for analysis. ALL STASHED UP- Shifted in abruptly passing the 550m. Shifted in abruptly passing the 200m when not fully clear of HOT SUNDAE causing that runner to be restrained. App J Metcalfe was reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) as a result of this incident. Stewards expressed concerns with technical aspects of App Metcalfe’s ride and discussed these matters with the assistance of Senior Jockey Jason Taylor. Further, Stewards advised App Metcalfe that the ride would be referred to the Racing Queensland Apprentice Training Team for review and tuition. EMILEE'S EMPIRE- Laid in passing the 800m. Bumped passing the 700m. ROWDASH- Momentarily raced in restricted room leaving the 100m. SONIC ARROW- Began awkwardly. EXCLUSIVE DROP- Bumped passing the 700m. GERTIE GOER- Shifted in marginally leaving the 100m placing ROWDASH in restricted room, before being corrected by its rider. Jockey W O’Connell was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. Jockey O’Connell pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR132(5) in that he did use his whip in an excessive manner, 20 times in totality, throughout the event. Jockey O’Connell’s license to ride in races was subsequently suspended for a period of 7 days, to commence 10 March up to and including 16 March, 2024. Jockey O’Connell was advised of his right to an appeal. HOT SUNDAE- Stewards permitted Jockey A Allen to be substituted as rider of the mare as Jockey N Fazackerley had been mistakenly declared due to a miscommunication. Steadied when shifted in and away from another runner passing the 550m. Inconvenienced and obliged to shifted in away from heels approaching the 200m.
