WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD/FAST AFTER R.1 RAIL - 2.5M. ALL TRACK
GENERAL: FROM BTC, 17.1.01
Trainer F.W. Mitchell was fined $50 for nominating DAPHINGA for the 2yo Colts and Geldings Maiden event when ineligible.
RACE 1: BLACK TOYOTA ROMA H'CAP - 1010M.
Trainer R. Lipp was fined $25 for presenting NORTHERN FEAR in the enclosure without blinkers.
HUGGER MUGGER jumped away awkwardly and shifted out and brushed PRESENTLY, which was also slow to begin.
Approaching the first turn, HUGGER MUGGER shifted in abruptly and lost considerable ground. HUGGER MUGGER then shifted out and raced ungenerously for the remainder of the event. Trainer M. Mair was advised that a warning would be placed on HUGGER MUGGER in relation to its racing manners.
JUST THE DROP also hung out in the middle stages of the event.
The track rating was upgraded to fast following this event.
RACE 2: SHELL COMPANY OF AUSTRALIA H'CAP - 1010M.
IDESA BAY jumped awkwardly and then shifted in abruptly.
SECOVER was slow to begin.
Near the 900m., HAAYIL MARY had to be steadied to avoid the heels of CITY EXPRESS, which shifted in. P. Wolfgram, rider of CITY EXPRESS, was advised to exercise more care in future.
Approaching the 600m., CITY EXPRESS shifted in when racing greenly and brushed the running rail. TRIVIAL PURSUITS,which was following, also shifted in and brushed the running rail.
SECOVER was inclined to hang out in the middle stages.
Apprentice D. Griffin, rider of TURIN, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in under pressure, tightening the running of CITY EXPRESS, which had improved to that runner's inside.
HAAYIL MARY, which finished a distant last, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon who reported that the filly was shin sore in the off fore leg. Trainer's representative Mr L. Birchley advised that the filly would be immediately spelled.
Following the race, the club's veterinary surgeon also reported that MISS JAKEO had sustained a laceration to the front of the off fore pastern.
K. Pope, rider of MISS JAKEO, pleaded guilty to a charge under AR 137(c), in that he made a celebratory gesture prior to his mount passing the winning post. K. Pope was fined the sum of $200.
RACE 3: WIDELAND INSURANCE BROKERS H'CAP - 2100M.
JAY ELL jumped awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with LORD HIGH ADMIRAL.
After leaving the 600m., MIDNIGHT DEAL had to be checked to avoid the heels of the tiring AXELANDER.
AXELANDER collapsed onto the track near the 200m. after suffering an internal haemorrhage..
M. Cahill was questioned regarding the disappointing performance of JAY ELL. He stated that JAY ELL was slowly away after being restless in the barrier stalls and whilst the gelding had to be eased off the heels of runners near the 800m., JAY ELL was never travelling well and was under pressure prior to the home turn.
RIVER STAGE cast its off fore plate in running.
RACE 4: BLACK KUBOTA - ARCHERFIELD H'CAP - 1615M.
After receiving slight pressure from TELESIO approaching the 1400m., 'TIS LOVE shifted in and brushed the hind quarters of LIAM LAD. S. Galloway reported that after receiving this contact, LIAM LAD then commenced to race fiercely and had to be steadied and in doing so, shifted out, causing 'TIS LOVE to be taken out onto TELESIO and having to be checked.
Near the 50m., 'TIS LOVE had to be steadied to avoid the heels of LIAM LAD, which shifted in.
J. Byrne was questioned over his riding of TELESIO in the early and middle stages. J. Byrne stated he had been instructed to position the gelding close to the lead, however after being caught 4 wide making the first turn, he elected to ease TELESIO to gain a trail with cover as he was of the belief that TIME SCALE and COUNTERSHOT, which were racing wider than himself and progressing forward, would ensure a reasonable pace was maintained when they gained a position closer to the lead. He added that unfortunately the pace did not increase until near the 600m., at which stage he was forced to trail DIRECTOR'S SPECIAL when TELESIO could not sprint.
Apprentice A. Morrison was fined $200 for returning to scale in excess of half a kilogram over his declared riding weight.
RACE 5: PLASFAB PLASTICS AND SIGNS H'CAP - 1350M.
MYSTIFYING was slow to begin.
After leaving the 1200m., ALWAYS IRISH commenced to overrace and when being steadied, shifted in, tightening the running of KAORU QUEEN.
Near the 1100m. when the pace steadied, ANTS had to be restrained to avoid the heels of REAL FORCE.
J. Byrne, rider of the 3rd placegetter, VIDA CELESTE, was reminded of obligations to ride his mounts right to the finish line.
A veterinary examination of VERSETIME following the event revealed the mare to be suffering from heat stress.
RACE 6: SHELL HELIX H'CAP - 1200M.
ZUKA, which sustained lacerations and severe bruising outside of the off hock after being kicked behind the barriers, was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 3.51 p.m.. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on ZUKA were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 42 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 24 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time.
Shortly after the start, MINER shifted in, taking BUCKRIDGE in on to RIVER AFFAIR, which tightened the running of CENTRE FORCE, which had to be checked. Whilst stewards acknowledged that MINER had shifted in abruptly on this occasion, M. Cahill, rider of MINER was nonetheless reprimanded for failing to make a greater effort to prevent his mount causing interference.
Approaching the 1000m., PHOROUS shifted in, tightening MINER in on to BAGALINO, resulting in BAGOLINO having to be steadied. J. Byrne, rider of PHOROUS, was severely reprimanded and advised that he must ensure he allows sufficient racing room for runners to his inside.
After leaving the 1000m., BAGALINO had to be checked when further tightened by MINER, which was taken in by PHOROUS, which shifted in and away from SCHUMANN. In this incident, CENTRE FORCE clipped the heels of BAGOLINO and blundered.
RACE 7: BLACK TOYOTA AUSTRALIA DAY H'CAP - 1110M.
C. Whiteley, rider of MANNDO, accidentally dropped his whip at the 200m..
RACE 8:KUBOTA MOWERS & TRACTORS H'CAP - 1350M.
PEARL STAR shifted in under pressure inside the 100m., obliging J. Byrne to stop riding that gelding. J. Byrne was also obliged to stop riding his mount to avoid the heels of CINCHED, which shifted in close to the finish line.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
