WEATHER - FINE TRACK - DEAD RAIL - 5M. ALL TRACK
RACE 1: HARDY BROTHERS JEWELLERS H'CAP - 2200M.
PLACID REIGN and AULD HAT were both slow to begin.
At the 1200m., LORD MAYOR was momentarily tightened for room between LORDNOR and SAILOR'S LARK, which shifted out from behind MYSTIFYING once that horse assumed the lead.
MYSTIFYING overraced for some distance after leaving the 1200m. and struck the heels of LORDNOR at the 1000m..
RACE 2: THE COURIER-MAIL H'CAP - 1200M.
Stewards acceded to a request from connections to replace A. Merritt as the declared rider of TUPELO with apprentice N. Evans. It was established that a misunderstanding had occurred regarding A. Merritt's intended riding weight.
Passing the 100m., TORNATO LASS was hampered by MISS CRABOPPLE, which was inclined to shift out under pressure.
When questioned, N. Evans was unable to provide any explanation for the disappointing performance of TUPELO. He indicated that the horse travelled well however failed to respond once placed under pressure. A veterinary examination of TUPELO following the event revealed the mare had sustained a laceration to the outside of the off hind fetlock. A post race swab sample was taken from TUPELO.
The track rating was upgraded to good following this event.
RACE 3: THE CITYTRAIN SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1350M.
HAIRSPRAY was slow to begin.
I'M IN HEAVEN began awkwardly.
When steadied off the heels of FONTINA, which shifted in at the 1100m., SEMAGIC commenced to overrace and shifted out, making contact with CANTANTES. S. Shield, rider of FONTINA, was reminded of his obligations to be at least 2 lengths clear when shifting ground.
HAIRSPRAY was held up for clear running until near the 200m..
A veterinary examination of HAIRSPRAY, which performed disappointingly, revealed the filly to have pulled up shin sore in the near foreleg.
RACE 4: CHIEF DE BEERS H'CAP - 1350M.
After improving quickly to the inside of the heels of MAY ROYAL, AMAIZKAY was momentarily tightened when MAY ROYAL shifted in slightly at the 1100m..
The club's farrier reported that METAL MERCHANT had shifted its near hind plate in running, which resulted in the toe clip piercing the sole of its foot.
RACE 5: ARTHR ANDERSEN H'CAP - 1350M.
KENISKI and ASDAAM came together at the start.
Passing the 600m., TERTIARY was cramped for room inside REGAL CLASS.
Upon straightening, REGAL CLASS was held up when attempting to obtain a run to the inside of SWOOPING EAGLE where there was sufficient room. REGAL CLASS was again impeded over the concluding stages between INTERMANIA and SWOOPING EAGLE.
SWOOPING EAGLE was inclined to lay in over the concluding stages, which hindered G. Colless's efforts to fully test his mount.
RACE 6: THE NATION'S 100TH BIRTHDAY H'CAP - 1020M.
On the first turn, UNDERCOVER BROTHER had to be restrained to avoid the heels of LORD KARIOI, which shifted in when not quite clear. N. Tomizawa, rider of LORD KARIOI, was severely reprimanded for failing to exercise due care.
RACE 7: CENTENARY OF FEDERATION QUEENSLAND CUP - 1630M.
K. Pope, rider of the winner TOBOLSK, was fined $400 for being in breach of AR 137(c), in that he made a celebratory gesture just prior to the finish line. In determining penalty, stewards took into account this was K. Pope's third offence under this rule. Furthermore, K. Pope was given a formal direction by the stewards that he was to cease the practice of making such gestures either prior to or in the vicinity of the winning post.
S. Katsidis, rider of BRIGHTER SCENE, was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in near the 1400m. at a stage when not clear of TURF KING, resulting in TURF KING being hampered.
Approaching the 800m., BUCKRIDGE was cramped for room by MR. SMUGG, which was inclined ot lay in. As MR. SMUGG attempted to shift out from behind TURF KING at the 700m.,, BUCKRIDGE improved quickly to that horse's outside, which resulted in those horses racing tight for some distance. The tightening to MR. SMUGG was exacerbated at the 600m. when TURF KING shifted out.
MR. SMUGG dipped at the 250m..
RACE 8: HAMILTON ISLAND H'CAP - 1200M.
The start of this race was delayed due to AFLAC requiring farrier attention.
Approaching the finish line, AFLAC was accidentally struck across the head by the whip of A. Merritt, rider of WISELINK.
ALL WINNERS AND TUPELO WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
