RACE 1: BTC YOUNG MEMBERS' H'CAP – 1350M
THE BOWRAL BATSMAN began awkwardly and lost ground.
THE BOWRAL BATSMAN was inclined to lay out and race a little awkwardly on the home turn.
When questioned regarding the performance of LORD DEHERE, M. Pelling stated that his saddle rolled to the off side during the middle stages of the race which placed him at some disadvantage and that the colt shifted ground very abruptly on the point of the home turn, placing him in further difficulty. He added, however, that this happening could not explain the horse's performance as he was most concerned by the manner in which it compounded over the concluding stages. A veterinary examination of LORD DEHERE subsequent to the event revealed the colt to be in a distressed state, however no other abnormalities could be detected. Trainer M Mair undertook to have a thorough examination carried out upon LORD DEHERE, including an ECG test. Mr Mair was further advised that LORD DEHERE must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to its next race start.
A veterinary examination of MACHTIG CUM LAUDE, which was tailed off throughout the event, failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 2: BECOME A BTC MEMBER H'CAP – 1620M
J. Taylor, the rider of SUPER IMPRINT, was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in at the 1400m resulting in EMOSEWA having to be steadied when tightened for room.
Leaving the 1200m BIONIC NED commenced to overrace and shifted out off the heels of SUPER IMPRINT. When BIONIC NED shifted back in to resume its position some distance later, SERGEANT PEPPERS had to be steadied.
PEKAN ROSE had difficulty obtaining clear running between the 300m and the 200m.
Trainer R. Spackman reported that BIONIC NED sustained lacerations to both hind legs.
RACE 3: NETWORK TEN THE GUARDIAN H'CAP – 1200M
LIGHTHOUSE ROAD jumped outwards at the start, tightening ZED STAR out on to STAR OF TELESTO.
When taken out by TRANSCEND at the entrance to the straight, POWER AND EGO had to be steadied away from the heels of TOP TORQUE which also shifted in slightly at that stage.
Passing the 200m CANADIAN GOLD attempted to force a run between STAR OF TELESTO and SAM'S GOLD. As a consequence of making contact with SAM'S GOLD, CANADIAN GOLD became unbalanced. S. Galloway, the rider of CANADIAN GOLD, was cautioned regarding this incident.
Some distance after the finishing line B. Swanton was dislodged from ZED STAR, however sustained no apparent injury.
RACE 4: AMP H'CAP – 2020M
On return to scale a protest was lodged by M Pelling, the rider of 2nd placegetter RHYTHMIC ROAD, against IDLE WARRIOR (K. Yoshida) being declared the winner, alleging interference between the 600m and the home turn. It was established that passing the 600m IDLE WARRIOR shifted out from behind the tiring INDIAN SLIPPER, making solid contact with RHYTHMIC ROAD. It was further established that IDLE WARRIOR continued to shift out approaching the home turn, causing RHYTHMIC ROAD to be further hampered. Bearing in mind the margin of a short head which separated both horses at the finish, stewards upheld the objection and amended the placings to read:
1st RHYTHMIC ROAD
2nd IDLE WARRIOR
3rd FRENCH KNICKERS.
RACE 5: GIANNIS RESTAURANT H'CAP – 1200M
SPORTY DANE was slow to begin.
On jumping away MELOIDIA was tightened for room between HATTA'S DANCER and SIGNAL GIRL, both of which shifted ground.
Passing the 1100m AURUM VALLEY shifted in slightly, placing HATTA'S DANCER and NELLIE DE AIR in restricted room. As a consequence, both NELLIE DE AIR and HATTA'S DANCER commenced to overrace, which resulted in NELLIE DE AIR having to be severely checked off the heels of FLORACE and shifting out hampering HATTA'S DANCER and AURUM VALLEY.
Leaving the 800m MELOIDIA lost ground after having to be steadied off the heels of NELLIE DE AIR which continued to race ungenerously.
Approaching the home turn SIGNAL GIRL had to be steadied off the heels of HATTA'S DANCER.
KOHINOOR BLUE was momentarily held up when making ground near the 250m.
RACE 6: AMP SUPERANNUATION SPRINT H'CAP – 1100M
Trainer G. Anderson was fined $50 for presenting KNIGHTLY DISPLAY without blinkers.
Apprentice L. Morrison, the rider of LORD KARIOI, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that approaching the first turn she permitted her mount to shift in when not clear of COUP DE GRACE, resulting in COUP DE GRACE being taken in and making contact with ROYALSYN. As a consequence, ROYALSYN was forced across the running of BATON which had to be severely checked. L. Morrison was suspended for a period of 8 meetings to commence at midnight on Saturday, 16 February, and expire at midnight on Thursday, 28 February.
RACE 7: NETWORK TEN THE GUARDIAN H'CAP – 1620M
When questioned regarding the performance of IF YOU PLEASE, P. Hammersley stated that after contesting the lead in the run to the first turn he elected to steady and allow MIDSHIPMEN ALL to cross his mount. He added that no sooner had MIDSHIPMEN ALL assumed the lead than the rider of that gelding slowed the pace which resulted in IF YOU PLEASE pulling very hard in the back straight before receiving some minor crowding from FLYING FEET at the 600m. He further stated that whilst on face value IF YOU PLEASE was somewhat disappointing with its failure to run on when presented with an inside run in the straight, he was critical of his own ride in that he should not have surrendered the lead on the first turn and placed himself in the awkward position which he eventually assumed. A veterinary examination of IF YOU PLEASE subsequent to the event failed to reveal any abnormality.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
