WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - TRUE
RACE 1: THE NUNDAH LODGE H'CAP - 1350M.
On return to scale, a protest was lodged by M. Rice, rider of the 3rd placegetter, TAMING THE SHREW, against PRINCE PERCY being declared the 2nd placegetter, alleging interference approaching the finishing line, was upheld and the Judge's placings amended to: No.4 - IN THE MIDNIGHT - 1st; No.9 - TAMING THE SHREW - 2nd; No. 5 - PRINCE PERCY - 3rd.
A further protest lodged by M. Rice against IN THE MIDNIGHT being declared the winner, also alleging interference near the finish line, was withdrawn by M. Rice, however stewards considered the objection on its merits and the protest was dismissed. At a subsequent inquiry, C. Spry was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that approaching the finish line, he permitted his mount to shift out when not sufficiently clear of TAMING THE SHREW, resulting in TAMING THE SHREW having to be checked, and resulting in further interference being suffered by LION ISLAND. C. Spry was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 10 July, and to expire at midnight, 25 July 2004.
S. Galloway was also found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that approaching the finish line, he permitted his mount to shift in, resulting in interference being suffered by LION ISLAND. S. Galloway was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 11 July, and to expire at midnight, 24 July 2004.
ITISISIT jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, hampering DONALD'S GIFT.
Approaching the 800m., LION ISLAND raced ungenerously and had to be restrained off the heels of PRINCE PERCY.
Nearing the 300m., TAMING THE SHREW shifted out and made contact with LION ISLAND.
RACE 2: BINIRIS H'CAP - 1110M.
On return to scale a protest was lodged by S. Katsidis, rider of the 4th placegetter, GROUND SWELL, against PICCOHI being declared the 3rd placegetter, alleging interference near the 200m.. It was established that after leaving the 200m., PICCOHI shifted out into the rightful running of GROUND SWELL, forcing S. Katsidis to stop riding, resulting in that horse losing momentum. Bearing in mind the margin of a half neck at the finish, the protest was upheld and Judge's placings amended to read: No.10 - KING'S CLAN - 1st; No.2 - BOOM SHAKER - 2nd; No.9 - GROUNDSWELL - 3rd; No.3 - PICCOHI - 4th.
ROYAL CANNY and GROUND SWELL came together on jumping away.
ROYAL CANNY was inclined to hang out in the middle stages.
M. Cant and trainer Mrs H. Page were questioned in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of MISS HAVERSHAM. M. Cant stated that the horse jumped awkwardly, and as a consequence had to be hard ridden in the early stages to maintain a forward position, however he was caught wide approaching the first turn and was obliged to race wide. He felt that this aspect had contributed to the disappointing performance. A veterinary examination of MISS HAVERSHAM failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.
RACE 3: BRISBANE TURF CLUB - MT OLIVET PLATE - 1200M.
Passing the 800m., DEPUTY DEAL had to be steadied off the heels of CELESTIAL DIVA.
In the straight, LOOK AT HIM was inclined to shift in under pressure.
RACE 4: BREAKFAST CREEK CRICKET CLUB H'CAP - 1615M.
EARLSTOUN GRACE was a late scratching 2.11 p.m.. Following an explanation form trainer T. Hancock that the horse could not be loaded on to the float, no action was taken.
M. Cant was substituted as the rider of HENRY THE OCTOPUS, and D. Green as the rider of OCHEROUS in race 5 when P. Hammersley was to be overweight for both engagements. P. Hammersley was fined the sum of $300.
SPOT ON ALICE was slow to begin.
A short distance after the start, SPOT ON ALICE had to be eased off the hind quarters of HENRY THE OCTOPUS.
Near the 1400m., CHASING BUTTERFLYS had to be eased to avoid the heels of CARLITA MISS, which shifted in. G. Colless, rider of CHASING BUTTERFLYS, was cautioned and advised to provide more clearance in future when shifting ground.
LEICA FERRARI was caught wide rounding the first turn and raced 3 wide for the majority of the race.
A veterinary examination of CHASING BUTTERFLYS revealed the mare to be lame in the near hind leg.
RACE 5: LEO MURPHY'S BUS BOYS H'CAP - 1010M.
QUIPPER and CAPTAIN'S WAY came together on jumping away.
Approaching the 800m., MARIKAL shifted in, making contact with KAZAKING.
At the 800m., QUIPPER shifted in away from KAZAKING and made contact with CAPTAIN'S WAY, forcing that horse in on to SNIPPY.
At the 700m., QUIPPER had to be eased to avoid the heels of KAZAKING.
Near the 500m., SNIPPY shifted out and made contact with QUIPPER.
OCHEROUS was held up for clear running until near the finish line.
When questioned in relation to his riding of SNIPPY in the straight, G. McKeon stated that near the 300m., he was momentarily baulked when attempting a run between CAPTAIN'S WAY and KAZAKING when both horses shifted ground slightly. However, when able to obtain a run between both horses, he accidentally dropped his whip, and he indicated from that point onwards the horse was reluctant to take a run between CAPTAIN'S WAY and KAZAKING.
RACE 6: XXXX - MOUT OLIVET WELTER - 1200M.
No incidents.
RACE 7:TATTERSALL'S BOWLS CLUB H'CAP - 2020M.
M. Crawford replaced L. Morrison as the rider of LORD CLINTON due to L. Morrison being dually engaged for this horse and SWEET INNOCENCE. L. Morrison was fined the sum of $200.
PARAMETER, which had sustained a small laceration to the inside of the near nostril, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed to race.
SOME RED was slow to begin.
LORD CLINTON was inclined to pull hard rounding the first turn.
A veterinary examination of MOOKFREUX revealed the gelding to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Connections will be advised that MOOKFREAUX must undergo an ECG and trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.
ALL WINNERS AND MISS HAVERSHAM WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
