As D. Dunn was unable to arrive at the track in time to fulfil his engagement, C. Lindop was substituted as the rider of ROCKEM. At a subsequent inquiry, D. Dunn was fined $200 under AR. 85B for failing to fulfil his engagement.
ANYWAYS (J. Taylor) and WARRIOR GIRL (K. Purdy) were slow to begin.
ROCKEM (C. Lindop) was inconvenienced at the start by PAPRIKA (S. Katsidis) which shifted out.
Shortly after the start ROCKEM and BOCUSE (B. Melham) made contact.
BOCUSE overraced in the early stages.
EIRE OF MAGIC (J. Byrne) overraced for a short distance rounding the 800m turn.
GUDERIAN (T. Bell), FUNTANTES (D. Browne), EIRE OF MAGIC and MORCOMBE (Matthew Palmer) all raced wide throughout.
BOCUSE was held up for clear running approaching the 200m and shortly after shifted to the outside of GUDERIAN to improve. BOCUSE was then tightened for room between FUNTANTES and GUDERIAN when GUDERIAN shifted out slightly under pressure.
Stewards sought an explanation from J. Taylor regarding the riding tactics he adopted on ANYWAYS approaching the 100m where he failed to position that gelding into a run between TOUR GUIDE (M. Rodd) and DAUNTING LAD (S. Seamer). J. Taylor explained that ANYWAYS was working to the line well and rather than take that run between TOUR GUIDE and DAUNTING LAD, he felt it was a better option to shift to the outside of the heels of DAUNTING LAD so as to ensure an unimpeded run to the finish. J. Taylor added that he was mindful that had he improved between those two runners he may have been held up over the concluding stages as GENERAL SECRETARY, which was racing forward of those two runners, was shifting out slightly under pressure. Stewards advised J. Taylor that in their view it would have been a better option to take the run between TOUR GUIDE and DAUNTING LAD and he would be expected to do so in the future. As stewards were of the view that his decision at that time was a mere error of judgement, they did not feel that J. Taylor had breached the rules of racing to the required standard.
When questioned regarding the performance of FUNTANTES, rider D. Browne explained that the filly raced three wide but with cover, however did not travel comfortably and was under pressure prior to the home turn. D. Browne aded that in his view FUNTANTES was disappointing today. Trainer R. Heathcote explained that whilst he was disappointed in the performance of FUNTANTES, he felt that due to the extended spell FUNTANTES would take great benefit from today’s outing.
A post-race veterinary examination of WARRIOR GIRL revealed the filly to be shin sore and to have sustained lacerations to both fore bumpers and the offside hind bumper. Trainer M. Thexton was advised that she must produce a veterinary clearance for WARRIOR GIRL prior to its next race start.
Trainer L. Birchley had advised stewards in the days after PAPRIKA’s disappointing performance at the Gold Coast on 8 May that blood tests that had been taken indicated a higher than normal white blood cell count which may have had an effect on the performance. Mr Birchley added that at the filly’s most recent starts it had drawn difficult barriers and as a result connections had been forced to issue instructions for the riders to lead which in his opinion may not be the best way to ride the filly.
Race 2: GLENLOGAN PARK STAKES - 1350m
1st – Wealth Princess 2nd – Jerezana 3rd – Flying Tessie 4th – Acquired
FLYING TESSIE (N. Rawiller) was slow to begin.

For some distance approaching and passing the 1200m PRINCESS QUALITY and KANZAN bumped on a number of occasions.
KANZAN, BEJEWELLED (J. Cassidy) and PRINCESS QUALITY raced wide throughout.
PENNACCHIO (C. Munce) was inclined to lay in when placed under pressure in the early part of the straight and near the 150m had to alter course to the inside of the heels of CONQUERING QUEEN (S. Katsidis).
Approaching the 100m DEER VALLEY (J. Byrne) attempted a narrow run between RARE DIAMOND (T. Bell) and PERTINENCE (D. Browne). A short distance later DEER VALLEY brushed the hind quarters of PERTINENCE, resulting in that runner shifting in slightly and DEER VALLEY having to be checked. Stewards were satisfied that there was no one rider at fault in this matter and took no further action.
When questioned regarding the performance of WEALTH PRINCESS, rider M. Walker explained that the mare raced flat at Caloundra on Sunday, 9 May, as it had travelled from New Zealand three days prior to that race. M. Walker explained that WEALTH PRINCESS has since settled into its normal routine and its performance today reflected that the mare is back to her best form.
S. Katsidis advised that CONQUERING QUEEN, which weakened over the final 300m, in his opinion may benefit from being freshened up.

Approaching the 600m STRYKER (J. Cassidy) commenced to overrace and had to be checked to avoid the heels of LOCHIEL. MISS WITH ATTITUDE, which was following, had to be checked in consequence and shifted out abruptly and made heavy contact with STREETS AWAY (G. Colless), forcing that runner wider on the track and out on to PATAPINDA (D. Browne), which was also forced wider.
Also near the 600m LOCHIEL shifted in and bumped LAUNAY (K. McEvoy), which tightened the running of BEETHOG (J. Stanley). As a result of this SOPHROSYNE (M. Zahra), which was following, also had to be steadied, and that runner shifted out resulting in DUAL CHAMBER (C. Munce) having to be checked.
Over the concluding stages DUAL CHAMBER (C. Munce), when weakening, was tightened for room between SOPHROSYNE and UMANUGGET (S. Seamer) which shifted out.
Rider J. Stanley was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of BEETHOG today. He explained that although the filly was hampered near the 600m, she failed to respond to his riding in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of BEETHOG failed to reveal any abnormalities.
A post-race veterinary examination of CAPTAIN CLAYTON revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg and had lost its off fore plate in running. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that he would be required to produce a veterinary clearance for CAPTAIN CLAYTON prior to it racing again.
A post-race veterinary examination of PATAPINDA revealed that it had an elevated heart rate.
