SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:

As apprentice J. Wood was injured and J. Taylor, G. Colless, P. Hammersley, J. Bowditch, S. Galloway and Matthew Palmer were delayed in traffic en route to the course, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: AMBASSADOR TRAVEL QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Adebisi 2nd – Smokin’ Joey 3rd – The Ringmaster 4th – Upsala

ALTAI WARRIOR (G. Schofield), SMOKIN' JOEY (C. Brown), EPIC (J. Byrne) and BIG KEN THE CELT (M. Speers) were slow to begin.

ALOTTA SPUR (L. Nolen) jumped out at the start and bumped LIESELE (E. Wilkinson).

BINGO ROSE (S. Seamer) and LIESELE raced three wide throughout.

Rounding the 800m turn SMOKIN' JOEY shifted out inconveniencing MILO (C. Munce), which had to be steadied.

Shortly after entering the home straight SMOKIN' JOEY was disappointed for a run between UPSALA (S. Scriven) and THE RINGMASTER (P. Wolfgram) when that runner shifted out slightly. SMOKIN' JOEY then altered course to the inside of THE RINGMASTER to improve. P. Wolfgram was urged to exercise more care in similar circumstances when shifting ground.

Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce regarding the disappointing performance of MILO. Rider C. Munce explained that the gelding, which was having its first start in the clockwise direction, did not travel comfortably at any stage during the race and was disappointing. Trainer M. Pitman was also disappointed with the performance and explained that the gelding may be better suited on a bigger track and that due to traffic delays it had a lengthy float trip from the Gold Coast. Mr Pitman undertook to report to stewards anything that may come to light that explains today’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of MILO revealed no significant findings.

Stewards sought an explanation from E. Wilkinson regarding the performance of LIESELE. E. Wilkinson explained that although the filly travelled comfortably until placed under pressure upon straightening, it failed to quicken in the straight and in his view was disappointing. Trainer L. Birchley was also disappointed with the performance of the filly, stating that she seemed to race flat today. He added that if nothing becomes apparent in coming days that may explain today’s performance, he would be recommending to connections that LIESELE now be spelled.

Stewards questioned trainer D. Forster in regards to the seemingly improved performance of ADEBISI as compared to its 14th of 16 in the Gold Coast Guineas on 7 May. Ms Forster explained that early in its career ADEBISI had difficulty running out a strong 1200m and when the horse was successful when ridden from a midfield position in the Gold Edition Handicap it led connections to believe that the horse performs best when ridden with cover. Ms Forster added that at its most recent starts this had been their approach to ensure the horse was able to finish its races off, however it had overraced and performed disappointingly. Ms Forster further added that she had trialed the horse with alterations to its gear and it had performed well. She stated that today she gave no specific instructions to apprentice T. Bell and felt that when the horse was able to lead unchallenged it travelled comfortably within itself and was able to finish the race off. She further added that her intention will be to have the colt ridden in this manner going forward.

Race 2: LED SUPER SCREENS 2MWLY H’CAP - 1615m
1st – Steel Lips 2nd – Lucky Luna 3rd – Heartshaker 4th – Seeyou

Trainer L. Mayfield-Smith was fined $200 under LR. 67 for failing to declare C. Brown as the rider of INTERTHEBLACK by the prescribed time.

As no other riders were available, stewards permitted replacement riders G. Schofield (SEEYOU) and P. Wolfgram (MR SLICK) to ride 1kg above their declared weight.

TEARY EYED (A. Butler) was slow to begin.

MR SLICK overraced in the early stages and after passing the 1100m HEARTSHAKER (L. Nolen) had to be restrained to avoid the heels of MR SLICK when that runner shifted in when not quite clear.

AUSWORLD (S. Seamer) and REGAL GAZE (E. Wilkinson) raced three wide throughout.

Near the 700m SEEYOU, when overracing, shifted out slightly which resulted in TEARY EYED, which was also overracing, improving to the inside of SEEYOU where there was doubtful room. A short distance later SEEYOU shifted back in resulting in TEARY EYED having to be checked to avoid that runner’s heels.

Approaching the 100m REGAL GAZE (E. Wilkinson) improved up onto the heels of AUSWORLD (S. Seamer) and had to be restrained. REGAL GAZE was then disappointed for clear running between AUSWORLD and WORK THE ROOM (L. Cassidy) until inside the final 50m.

HEARTSHAKER was held up for clear running in the early part of the straight behind the heels of PLEASURE TIME (M. Speers).

Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy, the rider of WORK THE ROOM, regarding the seemingly disappointing performance today. Jockey Cassidy stated that the horse travelled well in a position a little worse than midfield and whilst he felt there was an opportunity to progress forward close to the fence passing the 500m he felt his best option was to move the horse wider on the track to ensure an unimpeded run to the finish. L. Cassidy added that he was able to obtain clear running in the early part of the straight, however WORK THE ROOM did not accelerate as expected and proved disappointing in the run to the line. Jockey Cassidy further added that he was at a loss to explain WORK THE ROOM’s disappointing performance other than to suggest that the horse may not have performed second up from a break. Trainer R. Heathcote stated that WORK THE ROOM had worked well leading into today’s race and whilst this was only the horse’s second run for him he had been advised by connections that the horse had performed disappointingly when second up in the past. The only explanation Mr Heathcote could offer was the fact that the horse was second up stepping up to a distance of a mile today following a very good first up run which may have flattened the horse somewhat. A post-race veterinary examination of WORK THE ROOM revealed no significant findings.

Race 3: STRATEGIC AIRLINES CLASS 6 PLATE - 1350m
1st – Alberton Park 2nd – Lake George 3rd – Jungle Heat 4th – Tycoon’s Pride

Trainer R. Heathcote advised that from the inside barrier it would be the intention to position CAPTAIN CLAYTON (L. Nolen) further forward in the field than its previous start. CAPTAIN CLAYTON was ridden accordingly.

GOOD MEDICINE (Matthew Palmer) began awkwardly and shifted in bumping LITTLE ANTICS (N. Yamada).

After being a little slow to begin ABSENT FRIENDS (L. Cassidy) was hampered soon after the start by MR ORIENT (B. Stewart) when that gelding blundered at the start and shifted out abruptly.

SIDE TO SIDE (J. Byrne) overraced in the early stages and for some distance after passing the 1200m had to be restrained to avoid the heels of ALBERTON PARK (M. Speers).

JUNGLE HEAT (R. Wiggins) overraced in the early and middle stages.

OUTSTANDINGLY (P. Hammersley), SILENT MOVIE (S. Seamer) and CICARELLI (C. Munce) raced three wide throughout.

At the 200m and again at the 50m LITTLE ANTICS was impeded for clear running and had to be steadied.

Near the 200m SIDE TO SIDE became awkward at the heels of ALBERTON PARK when that runner shifted out after being brushed by JUNGLE HEAT.

Leaving the 100m ALBERTON PARK shifted out under pressure taking SIDE TO SIDE outwards which resulted in tightening to both SILENT MOVIE and OUTSTANDINGLY.

Jockey L. Cassidy reported that he intended to get to the extreme outside on ABSENT FRIENDS in the early part of the straight, however the horse did not accelerate as expected and he was unable to secure clear running on the outside as a result of GOD’S HAND (A. Butler) holding a position tight to his outside. L. Cassidy added that there was then a general shift from runners forward of him and to his inside which resulted in him being held up for clear running from the 200m until well inside the 100m.

Race 4: SITA ENVIRONMENTAL THE PHOENIX - 1350m
1st – Fontelina 2nd – Lucky Morna 3rd – Cindarockinrella 4th –Saramehna

SHANGHAI BUND was a late scratching at 12.40 p.m. on veterinary advice that the gelding had heat in the near fore tendon. Connections were advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness for SHANGHAI BUND must be produced before it races again.

Trainer B. Guy advised that from the wide barrier, if circumstances permit, NOISY OCEAN (G. Colless) would be ridden in a mid to rear position. NOISY OCEAN was ridden accordingly.

BLACK JAG (J. Stanley) reared at the start and lost ground.

SWEET REWARD (L. Cassidy) was tightened for room near the 900m between BLACK JAG which, when overracing, shifted out slightly, and NOISY OCEAN, which shifted in slightly.

A post-race veterinary examination of DANISH WHISKEY (M. Speers), which hung out for a major part of the race and proved difficult to ride, revealed no significant findings. Trainer L. Birchley’s stable representative, B. Berwick, was advised that the filly would have to compete in an official trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to racing again.

Race 5: MULLINS LAWYERS GRAND PRIX STAKES - 2200m
1st – Turnitup 2nd – Mr Light Blue 3rd – Alma’s Fury 4th – Fillydelphia

A pre-race veterinary examination of THE CHEVRON (S. Arnold) cleared the gelding to start.

THE CHEVRON and ENDOR (C. Munce) were slow to begin.

Shortly after the start LEVI'S CHOICE (S. Galloway) was taken across the heels of MR LIGHT BLUE (T. Bell) by ECHOES OF HEAVEN (D. Dunn).

Approaching the first turn PLAYACTION (G. Schofield) was overracing and when being restrained by its rider lost ground. EQUISSENTIAL (P. Wolfgram), which was following, which had also commenced to overrace, then shifted out taking CHATEAU FORT (G. Colless) wider on the track. At the same stage ENDOR became unbalanced and made contact with the running rail and shifted out taking UNDERTHEBONNET (S. Scriven) wider on the track.

TURNITUP (L. Nolen) overraced in the early and middle stages.

MR LIGHT BLUE raced three wide in the early stages to a point near the 1100m where it was ridden forward to the position outside of the leader.

Near the 1400m TURNITUP, which was overracing, had to be restrained from the heels of FILLYDELPHIA (L. Cassidy). CHATEAU FORT, which was following, also had to be restrained and shifted out inconveniencing HOUR OF PERIL (J. Byrne).

When the pace slackened in the middle stages HOUR OF PERIL overraced at the heels of CHATEAU FORT, forcing its rider to move the horse to a three-wide position and improve forward.

Approaching the 700m THE CHEVRON improved on to the heels of ENDOR and had to be steadied.

S. Arnold, the rider of THE CHEVRON, reported that approaching the home turn he was momentarily tightened for room by ECHOES OF HEAVEN and was then held up when unable to improve rounding the home turn. S. Arnold added that in the straight he had difficulty obtaining clear running due to SATCH (P. Hammersley) and ENDOR shifting ground forward of him. Jockey Arnold further stated that once clear THE CHEVRON finished the race off very well.

G. Colless, the rider of CHATEAU FORT, which performed below expectations, explained that the colt travelled comfortably and from the 600m he followed HOUR OF PERIL into the race and upon straightening CHATEAU FORT did not quicken as he expected and in his opinion may not have stayed the distance of today’s race.

Stewards sought an explanation from trainer P. Murray regarding the riding tactics employed on ALMA'S FURY, which was ridden forward in the early stages to the lead which is in contrast to its most recent start. Mr Murray explained that at its last start he had instructed the rider to settle in a forward position with cover but after being slow to begin the gelding settled towards the rear of the field. Mr Murray added that he had instructed jockey H. Bowman to again attempt to settle in a forward position with cover, but after beginning well from a wide barrier ALMA'S FURY was ridden forward to the lead and travelled comfortably in this position. Rider H. Bowman explained that rather than be caught wide in the early stages he elected to proceed forward to the lead after beginning well. Stewards accepted their explanations.

TURNITUP lost its off fore plate in running.

Race 6: CHANNEL SEVEN PREMIER’S CUP - 2200m
1st – Shuffle The Cash 2nd – Tinseltown 3rd – Little Stranger 4th – De Fine Lago

SAINT ENCOSTA (T. Bell) stood flat-footed at the start and lost ground.

COUNT ENCOSTA (D. Dunn) and DE FINE LAGO (J. Bowditch) were slow to begin.

Approaching the winning post on the first occasion AMERICAN GANGSTER (N. Thomas) shifted in despite the efforts of its rider resulting in SHUFFLE THE CASH (L. Nolen) having to be eased when tightened for room.

HUMMA (L. Cassidy) raced wide in the early stages.

RAINBOW STYLING (C. Munce) raced three wide until a point near the 1000m where it obtained the position outside of the leader MR CLANGTASTIC (B. Avdulla).

LITTLE STRANGER (R. Wiggins) raced three wide throughout.

Near the 400m THE HOMBRE (J. Byrne) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so tightened the running of FEMINA FASHION (G. Colless) and HUMMA. At the same point HUMMA shifted in slightly, causing further tightening to FEMINA FASHION which in turn forced THE HOMBRE across the heels of MR CLANGTASTIC and having to be checked. In this incident VIKING HERO (G. Schofield), which had improved to the inside of the heels of THE HOMBRE, had to be severely checked. At a subsequent inquiry stewards were unable to attribute blame to any one rider, however J. Byrne and L. Cassidy (HUMMA) were advised that in similar circumstances they exercise greater care.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight DE FINE LAGO and WARRIOR WITHIN (P. Hammersley) were held up and unable to improve.

A post-race veterinary examination of RAINBOW STYLING revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg. Connections were advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness for RAINBOW STYLING must be produced before it races again.

Post-race veterinary examinations of MR CLANGTASTIC, THE HOMBRE and VIKING HERO revealed no significant findings.

Race 7: CARLTON MID DOOMBEN 10,000 - 1350m
1st – Beaded 2nd – Love Conquers All 3rd – Black Piranha 4th – Border Rebel

Correct weight was delayed when C. Munce, the rider of 2nd placegetter LOVE CONQUERS ALL, was afforded the opportunity of viewing the patrol film over the concluding stages to determine whether he had grounds to lodge an objection against BEADED (C. Brown) being declared the winner. After viewing the film, C. Munce indicated that he did not wish to lodge an objection. A further delay to correct weight occurred when L. Cassidy, the rider of BUFFERING, viewed the stewards’ footage of the start to determine whether he had grounds to make an application regarding his mount being afforded a fair start. After viewing the footage, L. Cassidy was satisfied that BUFFERING had been afforded a fair start and correct weight was declared on the Judge’s placings.

SNIPER'S BULLET (J. Winks) and BUFFERING (L. Cassidy) made contact at the start.

ALL SILENT (B. Avdulla), after receiving contact from SNIPER'S BULLET, shifted out under pressure in the straight.

Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy, the rider of BUFFERING, in regards to the gelding’s seemingly disappointing performance. Jockey Cassidy stated that his intention was to lead or sit outside the leader, however after beginning slowly he was forced to ride the horse in behind the leaders. L. Cassidy added that BEADED held the position one off the fence and he had to dictate the line of that runner in order to obtain the one off position and in doing so made contact with BEADED. This resulted in BUFFERING commencing to overrace. Jockey Cassidy further stated that whilst this may have had an effect on the horse’s capacity to finish the race off he felt that if the horse is to be successful over distances of today’s event and further it would have to take up a position in the lead. Trainer R. Heathcote was of the view that after being slow to begin and after coming into contact with BEADED in the early stages, BUFFERING overraced which is uncharacteristic and he was of the view that this was the reason for the gelding not finishing the race off. He indicated that he would proceed towards the Stradbroke Handicap and will have his stable veterinary surgeon conduct a precaution examination of the horse. A post-race veterinary examination of BUFFERING revealed no abnormality.

Race 8: STRATEGIC AIRLINES CHIEF DE BEERS - 1110m
1st – Gundy Son 2nd – Metallurgical 3rd – Nickiera 4th – Gold Trail

Upon arrival at the barriers, at the request of L. Cassidy GENERAL SECRETARY was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.

CARIAD (J. Byrne) was tightened for room at the start between CARRY THE CLUBS (C. Brown), which shifted out slightly, and BEETHOG (J. Bowditch), which shifted in.

Near the 800m DRENALIN (B. Stewart) improved up on to the heels of BEETHOG and had to be steadied.

GOLD TRAIL (H. Bowman), ULLADULLA (E. Wilkinson) and GENERAL SECRETARY (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.

Near the 600m PERUGIN THOUGHT (C. Munce) improved up on to the heels of BALAVAN (D. Dunn) and shifted out taking ULLADULLA wider on the track.

An inquiry was opened into the reasons for CARRY THE CLUBS having to be checked near the 200m. After evidence was taken from C. Brown (CARRY THE CLUBS) and B. Stewart (DRENALIN) the inquiry was adjourned to enable rider D. Dunn (BALAVAN), who had left the course, to provide evidence.

CARIAD was unable to obtain clear running over the final 100m.
