KAROO (E. Wilkinson) began awkwardly and lost ground.
J. Cassidy, rider of FULL METAL JACKET, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 550m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of AUSWORLD (B. Stewart), which resulted in AUSWORLD (B. Stewart) being taken in onto TELESTO WARRIOR (B. Richardson), which had to be checked by its rider when tightened for room between AUSWORLD and the running rail. J. Cassidy was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 12 May and to expire at midnight, 20 May 2012.
Near the 300m, FULL METAL JACKET (J. Cassidy) and LAKE GEORGE (J. Adams) made contact.
AUSWORLD had difficulty obtaining clear running for the entire length of the straight.
Race 2: Class 6 H'cap - 1200m
1st – Excellantes 2nd – Zekeza 3rd – Raise up 4th - Tunahog
Following advice from trainer B. Baldwin that DEMANDING MISS was showing signs of mastitis, the mare was examined by the veterinary surgeon upon arrival at the course and was cleared to start.
Stewards accepted jockey C. Brown’s explanation for being overweight and unable to fulfil his engagement on RAISE UP. K. McEvoy was substituted as the rider of RAISE UP.
The start of this race was delayed when VINTAGE MOSS became fractious in the barriers. The horse was removed from the gates, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.
MAROON BELLS (G. Killen) was slow to begin.
GREY ASSIGNMENT (C. Munce) began awkwardly.
D. Browne, rider of EXCELLANTES, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 800m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of INVINCIBLE MATE (E. Wilkinson), resulting in that horse having to be checked to avoid the heels of EXCELLANTES. Subsequently, INVINCIBLE MATE shifted out, inconveniencing ZEKEZA, COUP RAYVAN and DEMANDING MISS. D Browne was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 19 May and to expire at midnight, 1 June.
Near the 700m, TUNAHOG (B. Stewart) improved onto the heels of SYMBIOTIC (L. Cassidy) and had to be steadied.
TUNAHOG overraced for a short distance approaching the first turn.
Passing the 400m, LIFEBUOY (T. Bell) had to be checked when tightened for room by TUNAHOG (B. Stewart), which laid in away from VINTAGE MOSS (J. Byrne) after that horse shifted in slightly when racing in restricted room to the inside of DEMANDING MISS (M. Vance).
ALTAI WARRIOR (R. Wiggins) and LIFEBUOY were unable to obtain clear running over the final 100m and went to the line without being fully tested.
GREY ASSIGNMENT, VINTAGE MOSS (J. Byrne) and DEMANDING MISS (M. Vance) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from M. Vance regarding the performance of DEMANDING MISS. M. Vance stated that the mare was obliged to race wide throughout and did not quicken under her riding as expected in the home straight. She added that, in her opinion, DEMANDING MISS is now looking for races over a further distance than that of today’s race. A post race veterinary examination of DEMANDING MISS revealed the mare to be sore in the off fore leg. Trainer B. Baldwin was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for the mare prior to its next race start.
Race 3: Hardy Brothers Hampden Stakes – 1200m
1st – Noogoora Burr 2nd – Hoss Amor 3rd – Saturn Rock 4th – Choice Bro
PHOENIX FORCE (B. Shin) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, bumping BOBAN (D. Moor).
Approaching and passing the 800m, TREES A CROWD (T. Bell) commenced to overrace and had to be steadied from the heels of BETTER THAN READY (R. McMahon).
DANSAL (L. Cassidy) hung in when placed under pressure over the final 300m.
BOBAN (D. Moor) laid out when racing wide throughout the event. Connections indicated they intended to experiment with a change of gear on the horse, and on this basis a warning only was placed on the horse.
Stewards sought an explanation from trainer D. Lawlor in respect of the seemingly improved performance of NOOGOORA BURR today. Mr Lawlor stated that he was very disappointed with the horse’s effort at the Gold Coast on Saturday, 5 May, following which he had the stable’s veterinary surgeon examine the horse during the week which revealed no significant findings. He added that he believed the addition of blinkers, together with the improved track surface today at Doomben, strongly contributed to the improved performance.
A post race veterinary examination of DANSONATE revealed the horse to have broken down in the off foreleg and was euthanased on humane grounds.
A post race veterinary examination of PHOENIX FORCE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 4: Act For Kids Doomben Dash – 1010m
1st – Seek And Find 2nd – Nuptse 3rd – Delago Bolt 4th – Shafeeq
SOMMERSEA DRIVE (M. Cahill) hung out rounding the home turn.
Approaching and rounding the home turn, DELAGO BOLT (B. Shin) was held up for clear running. DELAGO BOLT then shifted out in an endeavour to secure clear running and came into heavy contact with CARRY THE CLUBS (D. Browne), which resulted in DELAGO BOLT becoming very unbalanced. As a result, JOINT CHIEFS (B. Stewart), which was trailing these runners, was placed awkwardly at the heels of CARRY THE CLUBS for some distance leaving that point.
RESCUE MISSION (D. Moor), SOMMERSEA DRIVE (M. Cahill) and LEAPFROG (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.
Race 5: Chairman’s H'cap - 2000m
1st – Hume 2nd – Ironstein 3rd – Warrior Within 4th - Spechenka
RUNDLE (T. Bell) jumped away awkwardly and had to be steadied shortly after the start from the heels of HEAD NORTH (J. Taylor), which shifted out.
G. Colless, rider of STREETS AWAY, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near 1300m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of HUME (S. Galloway), taking that horse in on to MARKED (L. Cassidy) which when tightened for room to the inside of HUME, had to be checked by its rider. G. Colless was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 12 May and to expire at midnight, 23 May.
RUNDLE overraced in the early stages and near the 1400m, jockey Bell allowed RUNDLE to stride forward to obtain a position outside the lead near the 800m.
Near the 700m, IRONSTEIN (J. Adams) had to be steadied when momentarily tightened by RUNDLE, which shifted in.
Inside the 100m, IRONSTEIN shifted out, resulting in WARRIOR WITHIN (P. Hammersley) having to be steadied when taken out towards the heels of HUME (S. Galloway).
A post race veterinary examination of HEAD NORTH revealed to the horse to be suffering from slight heat stress.
A post race veterinary examination of SIX O’CLOCK NEWS revealed the horse to be lame in the off foreleg. A veterinary clearance will be required SIX O’CLOCK NEWS prior to its next race start.
Race 6: Mitty’s Rough Habit Plate - 2000m
1st – Brambles 2nd – Margins 3rd – Poste Restante 4th - Isopach

Leaving the 1600m, URUNGA (J.Riddell) commenced to overrace and improved to the inside of POSTE RESTANTE (C. Munce) where there was insufficient room, resulting in MARGINS (T. Bell) having to be checked severely. In the circumstances, no action was taken.
Passing the 1500m, CAPTAIN FASTBUCK (A. Spinks), which was overracing, had to be restrained from the heels of RETUNE (M. Cahill).
Near the 1400m, ISOPACH (N. Rawiller) had to be checked and lost ground when tightened for room by NASHVILLE (K. Myers), which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. In the circumstances, no direct action was taken. PEPPERED BLACK (B. Stewart), which was trailing, had to be checked as a consequence.
Near the 300m, ISOPACH was disappointed for a run and was forced to switch across the heels of TRUMP (D. Browne) to obtain clear running.
Near the 50m, ZIGURAT (M. Vance) had to be steadied from the heels of URUNGA (J. Riddell), which shifted out.
ARCTIC (R. McMahon) and TRUMP (D. Browne) raced wide for the majority of the race.
Race 7: Bundaberg Distilling Co. BTC Cup - 1200m
1st –Sea Siren 2nd – Scenic Blast 3rd – Beaded 4th – Varenna Miss
SATIN SHOES (B. Shin) was slow to begin.
SATIN SHOES was tightened for room soon after the start between WOORIM (D. Browne) and FACILE TIGRE (N. Rawiller), both of which shifted ground.
Near the 1000m, SCENIC BLAST (S. Scriven) had to be steadied from the heels of SPIRIT OF BOOM (R. McMahon), which was taken in slightly by VARENNA MISS (J. Byrne).
For some distance approaching and passing the 900m, ELITE FALLS (L. Cassidy) and BLACK PIRANHA (P. Hammersley) bumped on a number of occasions.
FACILE TIGRE and SATIN SHOES raced 3 wide throughout.
Trainer J. McLachlan was afforded the opportunity of explaining the disappointing performance of FACILE TIGRE. Mr McLachlan stated that FACILE TIGRE, being a big striding horse, may not be suited by the tight Doomben circuit. Mr McLachlan advised he was disappointed with the performance and undertook to advise stewards of any abnormality that comes to light which may have had a bearing on the performance today. A post race veterinary examination of FACILE TIGRE failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 8: Class 6 Plate – 1350m
1st – Solzhenitsyn 2nd – Gunner Knox 3rd – Viva Las 4th – Dusty Gold
ABSENT FRIENDS (M. Vance) was slow to begin.

MONEYSAVER (N. Perrett) knuckled at the start and as a result shifted in and inconvenienced MOSSRIVER (J. Byrne).
Near the 900m, GUNNER KNOX (B. Stewart) had to be steadied from the heels of VIVA LAS and shifted out and made contact with OAK STREET (C. Munce).
STRUMMING (D. Browne), PLAYACTION (J. Taylor) and DUSTY GOLD (G. Colless) raced wide throughout.
MONEYSAVER (N. Perrett) was unable to secure clear running in the straight until after passing the 100m.
Passing the 200m, TEA TATTLE (B. Richardson), which had difficulty obtaining clear running, shifted out and bumped the hind quarters of OAK STREET (C. Munce). Soon after this, TEA TATTLE was taken in on to the hind quarters of AMETSIS, resulting in AMETSIS being taken in towards the heels of VIVA LAS, which also shifted out under pressure.
Stewards sought an explanation in respect of the tactics adopted on SOLZHENITSYN, whereby the horse raced in a position just behind the speed, which was in contrast to its customary racing pattern. Trainer Mr R. Heathcote stated he did not give any specific instructions and he had expected SOLZHENITSYN to position midfield or worse. Jockey J. McDonald stated that when the horse began well he allowed it to stride forward and the horse travelled comfortably just behind the speed. The explanation was noted.
An inquiry was opened into the reason for VIVA LAS having to be steadied near the 1000m. After taking evidence from B. Shinn, rider of VIVA LAS, the inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
Trainer C. Voigt pleaded guilty to a charge under AR140A in that he was careless in fitting the gear to VIVA LAS by not securing the bandages by stitching. Mr Voight was fined $400.
STRUMMING lost its off fore plate in running.
