Stewards sought an explanation from G. Colless regarding the performance of VASUKI. G. Colless explained that the gelding travelled well in the early and middle stages but did not respond to his riding from the 400m and weakened over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination of VASUKI revealed no abnormalities.
Race 2: GARY WOODGATE F&M MAIDEN H’CAP - 1030m
1st – Kiss And Wonder 2nd – Weilmoringle 3rd – Queen Rose 4th - Repetitious
After viewing the stewards’ patrol footage to determine whether he had grounds on which to lodge an objection against the winner, L. Cassidy, the rider of WEILMORINGLE, placed 2nd by the Judge, lodged an objection against KISS AND WONDER (S. Scriven) being declared the winner, alleging interference inside the final 100m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the video, it was established that after leaving the 150m WEILMORINGLE did shift in noticeably and near the 50m KISS AND WONDER shifted out slightly, resulting in both runners making contact. In the circumstances stewards were of the opinion that although KISS AND WONDER shifted out slightly, it was the significant shift inwards from WEILMORINGLE that resulted in the incident. Accordingly, stewards were not satisfied that the shift from KISS AND WONDER had materially affected the placings, dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings.
KISS AND WONDER (S. Scriven) jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and bumped QUEEN ROSE (E. Wilkinson).
KALUANUI (G. Cooksley) and REPETITIOUS (A. Spinks) were slow to begin.
THE SINGING BULLET (T. Harrison) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the home turn RONGONUI (P. Schmidt) was inclined to lay out and became awkward on the hind quarters of KISS AND WONDER.
G. Colless reported that YARRUM raced greenly throughout and near the 800m shifted in away from THE SINGING BULLET and became awkward at the heels of KISS AND WONDER. G. Colless added that following this YARRUM hung out and proved difficult to ride. Trainer M. Dunn was advised that YARRUM must barrier trial before racing again. A post-race veterinary examination of YARRUM revealed that the filly had been galloped on on the off hind leg.
Race 3: KEVIN RYAN 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Someday 2nd – Night Chills 3rd – Tale Of Harmony 4th – In Taipei
After being loaded into the barriers, GOLD BEST (G. Cooksley) lunged forward and struck its head. GOLD BEST was removed from barriers, examined by the veterinary surgeon and found to have blood in its offside nostril. GOLD BEST was declared a late scratching at 1.56 p.m. on veterinary advice. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on GOLD BEST be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
0 cent in the dollar for the Win #1 - SOMEDAY
3 cents in the dollar for place of winner #1 - SOMEDAY
8 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #2 – NIGHT CHILLS
9 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #7 – TALE OF HARMONY
VIEL LACHEN (J. Byrne) jumped awkwardly and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of IN TAIPEI (R. Wiggins).
After passing the 900m NIGHT CHILLS (S. Scriven), when overracing, had to be restrained from the heels of SOMEDAY (C. Munce).
Rounding the home turn MISS SWAN LAKE (G. Colless) was unable to improve when awkwardly placed at the heels of GLAZY (M. Hellyer) which had commenced to weaken.
Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight IN TAIPEI was held up when unable to obtain clear running.
K. Wharton reported that THIRD TIME LUCKY was unable to be restrained in the early stages and as a result raced wide on the track, placing him at a disadvantage. He added that THIRD TIME LUCKY was inclined to hang out for a major part of the race. Trainer B. Sturgess indicated that he would alter the gelding’s gear for future starts. Mr Sturgess was advised that THIRD TIME LUCKY must compete in an official barrier trial prior to racing again. A post-race veterinary examination of THIRD TIME LUCKY revealed no abnormalities.
NIGHT CHILLS lost its off hind plate in running.
Race 4: PAUL CURRAN CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Daytime Dazzler 2nd – Stream Of Light 3rd – Bossberg 4th – Intadom
Approaching the 1000m BRAMPTON (A. Spinks), when overracing, had to be steadied from the heels of BOSSBERG (L. Cassidy), which shifted in away from INTADOM (J. Byrne). Following this incident BRAMPTON raced fiercely in the early and middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination of BRAMPTON revealed that the gelding had sustained lacerations to the off foreleg. Trainer G. Burns was advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to BRAMPTON’s next start.
Near the 800m STEPHEN GOT EVEN, (T. Harrison), when overracing, was momentarily tightened between BRAMPTON and FLINDERS COMMAND (J. Taylor), which shifted in slightly.
FLINDERS COMMAND, TUNAHOG (M. Vance) and THE CRANBERRIES (P. Schmidt) raced wide throughout.
Rounding the home turn COUNT YOUR FINGERS (J. Lloyd) was held up when unable to secure clear running.
When questioned as to the performance of TUNAHOG, apprentice M. Vance stated that she was instructed to attempt to obtain cover. Ms Vance added that in the early stages she was unable to take up a position with cover close to the fence and was obliged to race three wide with cover. Ms Vance was of the view that as a result of being obliged to race three wide TUNAHOG failed to finish the race off as expected, however bearing in mind the circumstances, she was not overly disappointed with the gelding’s performance today. The explanation was noted. Trainer L. Mayfield-Smith agreed with the comments of apprentice Vance.
Race 5: TERRENCE LEWIS BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP - 1030m
1st – All That 2nd – Flinders City 3rd – Power Of Ed 4th – Magic Tartan
Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards the opportunity to view the patrol footage of an incident near the 800m to ascertain whether 2nd placegetter FLINDERS CITY (C. Munce) had sustained interference when tightened for room by the winner ALL THAT (T. Harrison). After viewing the video, stewards were satisfied that insufficient grounds existed on which an objection could be lodged against the winner. At a subsequent inquiry it was established that FLINDERS CITY raced in restricted room for some distance approaching and passing the 800m to the inside of ALL THAT, which shifted in when being restrained by its rider. Apprentice T. Harrison was issued with a severe reprimand and advised to ensure that she allows sufficient racing room to runners to her inside.
TABASSI (G. Colless) and CHAMPING (A. Spinks) bumped at the start.
POWER OF ED (D. Griffin) was slow to begin.
Near the 700m BEFORE THE STORM (M. Hellyer) had to be steadied when tightened for room by MR THATCHER (S. Galloway), which hung in despite the efforts of its rider.
MR THATCHER was inclined to lay in in the early part of the home straight.
SHAFEEQ (R. McMahon) had to be steadied when tightened for room near the 200m between NICKIERA (M. Vance) and TABASSI (G. Colless), which shifted out under pressure when not fully clear. G. Colless was issued with a severe reprimand and advised to ensure he makes a greater effort in the future to keep his mounts on a straight course.
Race 6: NEIL MCLEOD CLASS 3 PLATE - 1650m
1st – Cyclone Al 2nd – Noisy Ocean 3rd – Castle Express 4th – Shanghai Bund
Correct weight was delayed to allow L. Cassidy, the rider of 2nd placegetter NOISY OCEAN, the opportunity of viewing the stewards patrol footage to ascertain whether he had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner CYCLONE AL (S. Scriven), which shifted in and made contact with NOISY OCEAN near the finish line. After viewing the film, L. Cassidy indicated that he did not wish to lodge an objection and correct weight was declared on the Judge’s placings. At a subsequent inquiry S. Scriven was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
CASTLE EXPRESS (P. Schmidt) was slow to begin.
STRIP SHOW (J. Lloyd) overraced when racing three wide in the early stages and as a result was ridden forward to obtain the position outside the leader near the 900m.
SAINT SAIALA (A. Mundy) raced wide throughout.
After passing the 400m CASTLE EXPRESS shifted out and bumped GOTTA BE LUCKY (S. Galloway).
CASTLE EXPRESS was held up and unable to improve rounding the home turn.
Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy regarding the tactics adopted on NOISY OCEAN, which led the event today, which is in contrast to its most recent starts. Jockey Cassidy explained that it has been the intention at the two most previous starts to settle in a forward position, however two starts ago the gelding was slow to begin, which resulted in NOISY OCEAN settling further back than intended and at its most recent start, due to a wide barrier, NOISY OCEAN settled in a midfield position. L. Cassidy further added that when there was no pace in the early stages, NOISY OCEAN travelled comfortably in the lead.
Race 7: DRUMBEATS @ LYNDHURST CLASS 5 H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Choral 2nd – From London 3rd – Bingo Rose 4th – Matabrahma
Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards the opportunity to view the patrol footage in the home straight to ascertain whether there were grounds for an objection to be lodged on behalf of 4th placegetter MATABRAHMA (J. Byrne) against the 3rd placegetter BINGO ROSE (M. Hellyer). After viewing the film, stewards were satisfied that insufficient grounds existed for an objection to be lodged and correct weight was declared on the Judge’s placings. At a subsequent inquiry M. Hellyer was issued with a severe reprimand for allowing BINGO ROSE to shift out over the final 200m resulting in MATABRAHMA being taken wider on the track.
HEARTSHAKER (K. Matheson) was slow to begin.
DARTH (D. Green) raced fiercely in the early stages and for some distance approaching and passing the 1000m had to be restrained from the heels of FROM LONDON (J. Lloyd).
Near the 800m MAN FROM OZ (C. Munce), when overracing, had to be steadied from the heels of FROM LONDON. MAN FROM OZ continued to overrace for some distance following this incident.
BINGO ROSE, DARTH and MAGIC SHUFFLE (G. Cooksley) raced wide throughout.
Approaching and rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight until near the 300m MATABRAHMA was held up and unable to secure clear running.
After passing the 400m MAN FROM OZ shifted out and made contact with DARTH, which was taken out on to MAGIC SHUFFLE. C. Munce (MAN FROM OZ) was advised to show greater care when shifting ground.
CHORAL (T. Harrison) was inclined to lay out under pressure over the final 200m.
G. Colless reported that FANTASTIC FORCE failed to respond to his riding from the 500m and weakened in the home straight and was disappointing. Trainer A. Bailey stated that due to today’s pattern of racing FANTASTIC FORCE had to be ridden in a more forward position which he felt contributed to the gelding’s inability to finish the race off as expected. Nonetheless, Mr Bailey was disappointed with the performance of FANTASTIC FORCE and undertook to advise stewards of anything that comes to light in coming days that may explain the performance.
L. Cassidy was asked to explain the riding tactics adopted on LANDUNCAN, which settled in a position towards the rear of the field, which is in contrast to its normal racing pattern. L. Cassidy explained that LANDUNCAN, from a wide barrier, did not have the necessary early speed to take up a forward position and when racing in a position towards the rear of the field near the 800m had to be steadied from the heels of MAN FROM OZ when that runner was overracing and had to be checked by its rider. Stewards further questioned jockey Cassidy regarding the tactics approaching and rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight. Jockey Cassidy explained that he was unable to improve his position from the 600m when awkwardly placed at the heels of DARTH, which was weakening, and he was prevented from shifting out to improve as MAGIC SHUFFLE was racing to his outside. Jockey Cassidy added that rounding the home turn it was his intention to trail MAN FROM OZ into the race, however when that runner did not quicken as expected, he then attempted to improve between DARTH and MAN FROM OZ, but near the 250m was further inconvenienced when MAN FROM OZ shifted out slightly, which resulted in him having to alter course to the outside of DARTH to obtain clear running. Jockey Cassidy added that from that point LANDUNCAN worked to the line strongly. Stewards noted his explanation.
