Race 1: LED SUPER SCREENS BRISBANE TOWN PLATE - 1350m

HOLLYWOOD BOUND (C. Munce) was slow to begin.

OUTSTRIP (K. Matheson) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out hampering JUST A PERLA (M. Cahill).

RASTEIRA (T. Harrison) was slow to begin and then hampered soon after the start by PERSIAN BOOK (P. Schmidt), which shifted out after being bumped by JUST A PERLA.

When the pace steadied after passing the 900m CREDIT ONLY (G. Goold), SOUTHERLY (R. McMahon) and HOLLYWOOD BOUND all commenced to overrace. Following this, HOLLYWOOD BOUND continued to overrace and shifted out and had to be restrained from the heels of SECRETS TO LOSE (M. Speers).

ROYAL REWARD (L. Cassidy), SECRETS TO LOSE, BANCHORY LASS (M. Rodd) and JUST A PERLA raced wide throughout.

Near the 400m JUST A PERLA had to be checked when tightened for room between I’M A GENEE (R. Wiggins) and SECRETS TO LOSE, which shifted in when tiring. A short distance later SECRETS TO LOSE then shifted out, taking JUST A PERLA wider on the track.

Approaching and rounding the home turn HOLLYWOOD BOUND was unable to secure clear running.

After passing the 300m CREDIT ONLY shifted out and bumped VIVE LE VENT (L. Innes), which in turn shifted out and brushed SOUTHERLY.

GOLD FLOW (P. Hammersley) was held up for clear running from the 300m until leaving the 200m.

Approaching the finish line DROP SHOT (G. Boss), when weakening, shifted out and became unbalanced, which resulted in G. Boss being unable to ride that gelding out in his normal manner.

C. Munce (HOLLYWOOD BOUND) reported that his mount hung in when placed under pressure in the straight, placing him at a disadvantage. A post-race veterinary examination of HOLLYWOOD BOUND revealed no abnormalities.

Race 2: AMBASSADOR TRAVEL QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1200m

Trainer R. Heathcote advised stewards that from the inside barrier it would be the intention to have HEZA JETSETTER (R. Wiggins) settle in a midfield position with cover. The horse was ridden accordingly.

HOLEY GADOLEY (G. Cooksley), which was treated for a slight injury just below the nearside eye in the week leading up to this event, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

LOVE FOR RANSOM (M. Rodd) was restrained from its wide barrier to gain a position close to the fence.

Near the 1100m LOVE FOR RANSOM shifted in and made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced and lost ground.

TUKIYO (G. Geran) jumped away awkwardly, shifted in and bumped REFLECTANCE (T. Bell).

G. Boss, the rider of MY SHABELLA, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that leaving the 400m he permitted his mount to shift out, resulting in SUNSET AFFAIR being severely crowded between MY SHABELLA and HOLEY GADOLEY and losing its rightful running. G. Boss’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Saturday 25 May, and expire at midnight on Friday 7 June 2013.

Near the 200m HEZA JETSETTER shifted out and brushed DISCREET (R. McMahon), which in turn shifted out and bumped SUNSET AFFAIR (J. Cassidy), resulting in that runner becoming unbalanced.

Over the final 150m both CHEAPSKATER (T. Clark) and LOVE FOR RANSOM were unable to secure clear running and as a result went to the line not fully tested by their respective riders.

After passing the 100m SUNSET AFFAIR shifted out and inconvenienced THE CONSPIRATOR (P. Hammersley).

A post-race veterinary examination of ROCKY KING revealed that the gelding had cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer T. Bourke was advised that before ROCKY KING is permitted to race again the gelding must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and he must produce a veterinary clearance including the results of an ECG.

R. Wiggins (HEZA JETSETTER) was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out to the end of the race.

Race 3: NOVOTEL BRISBANE AIRPORT CLASS 6 PLATE - 1350m

Trainer T. Sears advised stewards that from the wide barrier it would be the intention to have THE RINGMASTER (P. Hammersley) ridden back in the field. The horse was ridden accordingly.

Connections advised that LONGSHOREMAN (P. Schmidt) would be ridden closer to the speed if circumstances permit. LONGSHOREMAN settled at the rear of the field.

VIKING HEART (R. McMahon) was slow to begin.

EQUISSENTIAL (G. Goold) jumped out at the start, taking SOMEDAY (C. Munce) out on to THE RINGMASTER (P. Hammersley).

THE RINGMASTER raced wide throughout.

VENTURE ON (C. Whiteley) was held up and unable to improve from the 500m until soon after entering the home straight.

STEEP (R. Wiggins) hung out rounding the home turn.

Rounding the home turn SHOW AFFECTION (A. Allen) and VIKING HEART were held up for clear running.

SHOW AFFECTION, which had difficulty obtaining clear running inside the 200m, had to be checked near the 50m when tightened between DOUBLE IMPACT (E. Wilkinson) and HOLD ME TIGHT (T. Harrison), which shifted out. In the circumstances, apprentice T. Harrison was reprimanded.

Race 4: GLEN LOGAN PARK STAKES - 1350m

GAI’S CHOICE (G. Schofield) jumped awkwardly, shifted in and hampered FLYING JET (L. Cassidy).

DIADEME (C. Reith) overraced in the early stages.

Near the 900m ALLTHERIGHTMOVES (G. Boss), when overracing, had to be steadied from the heels of ARINOSA (B. Avdulla) and shifted out and bumped GAI’S CHOICE.

GAI’S CHOICE and SKATING ON ICE (J. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.

Approaching the 800m RISK AVERSION (C. Munce), when overracing, had to be steadied from the heels of EMMALENE (T. Clark) and shifted wider. RISK AVERSION then raced wide for the remainder of the event.

Near the 500m ALLTHERIGHTMOVES improved on to the heels of ARINOSA and had to be restrained.

Near the 300m (D. Browne) shifted in, taking PETTY CURY (M. Du Plessis) in on to the hind quarters of DIADEME, resulting in that horse becoming momentarily unbalanced.

B. Avdulla reported that ARINOSA was not comfortable racing inside other runners and had a tendency to lay in in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of ARINOSA revealed the mare to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer C. Waller was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for ARINOSA prior to it being permitted to race again.

Race 5: AL BASTI EQUIWORLD BRC SIRES’ PRODUCE STAKES - 1350m

ARCHITECT (C. Munce) stood flat-footed at the start and lost considerable ground.

HOOKED (R. Wiggins) and BOUND FOR EARTH (G. Schofield) bumped heavily at the start.

ROSENET (C. Reith) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, resulting in THE VOICE (G. Boss) and VO HEART (E. Wilkinson) being inconvenienced.

ARCHITECT raced very fiercely in the early and middle stages.

When the pace steadied near the 800m PAXIMADIA (K. McEvoy) commenced to overrace and had to be restrained from the heels of GLOBAL DREAM (M. Rodd). PAXIMADIA then shifted out taking VILANOVA (H. Bowman) wider on the track. HOOKED, which was following and also overracing had to shift out abruptly to avoid the heels of PAXIMADIA and made contact with THE VOICE, forcing that runner wider on the track.

Approaching the 600m HOOKED continued to overrace and had to shift out to avoid the heels of VILANOVA and as a result made heavy contact with THE VOICE, again forcing that runner wider.

Near the 600m ONE GREY (J. Byrne) improved on to the heels of ZOUSTAR (J. Cassidy) and had to be restrained and shifted out resulting in MISSY LONGSTOCKING having to be steadied.

Leaving the 200m MISSY LONGSTOCKING (D. Browne), when attempting a narrow run between VO HEART and GLOBAL DREAM, made contact with the hind quarters of GLOBAL DREAM, resulting in that horse wanting to turn inwards, tightening the running of MISSY LONGSTOCKING, which had to be checked. In the circumstances no further action was taken.

A post-race veterinary examination of MISSY LONGSTOCKING revealed no significant findings.

A post-race veterinary examination of LE VAL (R. McMahon), which was eased down in the home straight, revealed the gelding to be very lame in the near hind leg, with a suspected pelvic fracture. Trainer N. Doyle was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for LE VAL prior to its next start.

Race 6: SITA AUSTRALIA CHIEF DE BEERS H’CAP - 1110m

TOO MANY REDS (L. Cassidy) and METALLURGICAL (T. Bell) were slow to begin.

GRIFFON (D. Browne) jumped away awkwardly.

LATIN NEWS (T. Clark), SPIRIT SONG (C. Munce) and BENNY’S BUTTONS (M. Cahill) raced wide throughout.

Near the 500m GRIFFON improved on to the heels of EASY RUNNING (P. Hammersley) and had to be restrained.

Approaching the 200m LATIN NEWS, when tiring, shifted out and bumped BAQABA (M. Hellyer), which in turn shifted out resulting in SPIRIT SONG being tightened between BAQABA and BENNY’S BUTTONS.

When asked to explain the seemingly disappointing performance of KARUTA QUEEN, L. Nolen stated that the mare races best when able to lead, however from the wide barrier today and a good amount of speed drawn to the inside, it was unable to lead and was obliged to settle in the one-out, one-back. Jockey Nolen added that it has been shown that this pattern of racing does not suit KARUTA QUEEN and in the past when the mare has raced similarly and been unable to lead, it has compounded in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of KARUTA QUEEN revealed no abnormalities.

Race 7: MULLINS LAWYERS GRAND PRIX STAKES - 2200m

Trainer C. Conners advised stewards that DEAR DEMI (L. Nolen) had been treated for an inflamed eyelid on Friday. DEAR DEMI was inspected by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

DEAR DEMI raced ungenerously and got its head up in the early part of the straight on the first occasion.

AROUSING SUSPICION (B. Egan) overraced in the early stages.

Near the 1200m HIPPOPUS (C. Munce), when overracing, had to be steadied from the heels of AMBITIOUS CHAMPION (J. Riddell) and shifted wider on the track. HIPPOPUS then raced three wide for the remainder of the event.

Near the 800m RHYTHM TO SPARE (G. Boss) shifted out around the heels of AROUSING SUSPICION in order to improve, taking HONORIUS (M. Rodd) and HIPPOPUS wider on the track.

Near the 450m AMBITIOUS CHAMPION shifted in and made heavy contact with NEW SPUR (T. Bell).

HIPPOPUS was inclined to lay in when placed under pressure in the early part of the home straight.

RHYTHM TO SPARE hung in when placed under pressure in the straight, placing its rider at a disadvantage in fully testing the horse.

J. Riddell (AMBITIOUS CHAMPION) was fined $200 for using the whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.

Race 8: CARLTON MID DOOMBEN 10,000 - 1350m

STEPS IN TIME (N. Rawiller), which became fractious in the barriers and lunged forward, was removed, examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Trainer J. O’Shea reported that STEPS IN TIME returned to the enclosure following the race with a small amount of blood in its mouth.

YOSEI (M. Payne) was slow to begin.

SEA SIREN (J. Cassidy), MANAWANUI (G. Schofield) and SPIRIT OF BOOM (M. Cahill) raced wide throughout.

Approaching the 600m RANGIRANGDOO (T. Clark) broke down and was retired from the event. A veterinary examination of RANGIRANGDOO revealed that the gelding had fractured both sesamoids and the horse was euthanased on humane grounds.

RAIN AFFAIR (C. Reith) shifted in towards the running rail rounding the home turn and put in an awkward stride and became unbalanced.

R. McMahon, the rider of BETTER THAN READY, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 300m he permitted his mount to shift out, taking JETSET LAD (J. Riddell) out on to MANAWANUI, which was taken out on to the hind quarters of SPIRIT OF BOOM, which resulted in that horse being taken inwards, which further resulted in severe crowding to MANAWANUI and JETSET LAD. R. McMahon’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 9 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Saturday 1 June and expire at midnight on Friday 14 June 2013.

When asked to comment on the performance of RAIN AFFAIR, C. Reith stated that in his opinion RAIN AFFAIR may have come to the end of its preparation as the horse was unable to muster its customary early speed and was struggling to hold a forward position. He added that he had recommended to connections that the horse may benefit from a spell. Trainer J. Pride confirmed the stable’s intention to send the gelding for an immediate spell.

Race 9: THE CHANNEL SEVEN PREMIER’S CUP - 2200m

Trainer L. Brennan was reprimanded under LR. 30 for failing to have SAVANAH RUSH on course by the prescribed time.

SAINT ENCOSTA (M. Cahill) and ENDOR (G. Cooksley) were slow to begin.

GINGA DUDE (K. McEvoy), SAVANAH RUSH (M. Du Plessis), STUDIO (T. Clark) and MISS ARTISTIC (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.

Approaching the 600m STUDIO shifted out and made contact with SAVANAH RUSH.

T. Clark, the rider of STUDIO, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 100m he permitted his mount to shift out under riding when insufficiently clear of MARGINS (T. Bell), resulting in that horse having to be checked when tightened for room between STUDIO and PRECEDENCE (H. Bowman), which shifted in marginally. T. Clark’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 5 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Saturday 1 June and expire at midnight on Sunday 9 June 2013. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account jockey Clark’s extremely good record in relation to careless riding matters. H. Bowman was reprimanded.

Over the final 100m SAINT ENCOSTA was held up for clear running and as a result went to the line not fully tested by its rider.

Stewards sought an explanation from G. Boss regarding the performance of MIDSUMMER SUN. He stated that the gelding travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages but did not sprint as expected when placed under pressure soon after straightening. He added that he had concerns with the recovery of MIDSUMMER SUN. A post-race veterinary examination of MIDSUMMER SUN failed to reveal any significant findings. Trainer S. Kavanagh advised stewards that in his opinion MIDSUMMER SUN overraced in the early stages and this had a detrimental effect on the gelding’s overall performance. He added that he was pleased with the way in which the horse had pulled up following the event and it would be his intention to continue with its current preparation.
