GENERAL

As R. McMahon was injured and P. Holmes was ill, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: MOUNT FRANKLIN SPARKLING NMW H’CAP - 1020m

ELITE ATEATES (C. Munce) raced three wide without cover throughout.

Leaving the 700m ELITE ATEATES shifted in, momentarily tightening the room of SHAZZLE PAZZLE (A. Allen), which had to be steadied.

B. Gill, the trainer of UNIQUE FUSE, which was beaten a considerable distance, was advised that the horse would not be permitted to race in the metropolitan area until it establishes form in the provincials.

DON’T GET ME RONG (G. Colless) lost its off fore plate in running.

Race 2: MAKERS MARK H’CAP - 1020m

K. Wharton (JUNGLE HEAT) reported that he was held up between the 300m and the 200m when disappointed for a run between LIGHTFEET LADY (J. Byrne) and BUCKMOORE (R. Thompson), both of which shifted ground slightly.

R. Thompson reported at scale that BUCKMOORE had a tendency to hang in, which necessitated him changing his whip from his left hand to his right hand.

Race 3: JIM BEAM BM90 H’CAP - 1350m

D’JET (A. Holt) blundered on jumping away.

OUR HUSSEY (K. Wharton) raced wide throughout.

A. Allen, rider of MISHANI WARRIOR, which was held up for clear running in the early part of the straight, directed his mount outwards and came into contact with DE DOZEN STARS (J. Byrne) on several occasions between the 300m and the 150m when attempting to force a run between that horse and D’JET. As a result of DE DOZEN STARS maintaining its racing line, MISHANI WARRIOR became awkward at the heels of D’JET and had to be steadied. After considering the evidence presented by both riders at this inquiry and the comments of Jockeys’ Advocate S. Scriven on behalf of apprentice A. Allen, stewards informed apprentice Allen that whilst they encouraged competitive riding, it was their view that when jockey Byrne was successful in resisting the movement of MISHANI WARRIOR on several occasions leaving the 300m, apprentice Allen should not have persisted in the manner he did. A reprimand was issued.

When afforded the opportunity to explain the disappointing performance of INDUBIOUS, M. Cahill stated that after racing in a three-wide position, near the 600m the horse commenced to lay out and when he placed it under pressure from that point it was, in his opinion, most disappointing and he was at a loss to offer a tangible explanation for its performance.

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice A. Allen in respect of the tactics adopted on MISHANI WARRIOR at the top of the straight whereby he improved to the inside of DE DOZEN STARS passing the 400m which ultimately resulted in him being held up until inside the 150m when unable to secure clear running between the leader of the event, D’JET, and DE DOZEN STARS. Apprentice Allen explained that there was an opportunity to improve to the outside of DE DOZEN STARS approaching the 500m, however it was apparent to him leaving that point that DE DOZEN STARS was under pressure and he was of the view that given the manner in which his mount was travelling, he would be able to improve to that horse’s inside and dictate the line of DE DOZEN STARS outwards to secure clear running in the early part of the straight. Stewards informed apprentice Allen that in their view he would have had to move to the outside of DE DOZEN STARS before the 500m and given the circumstances it was not unreasonable for him to take the course of action that he did.

Race 4: THIRSTY CAMEL 1MW H’CAP - 1640m

LIBERTY’S MAGIC (T. O’Hara) was slow to begin.

HEART OF MANY (L. Cassidy) overraced during the early stages.

PRIMARY COLOUR (A. Allen) raced ungenerously for a short distance near the 1400m.

TROILUS FUSE (M. Cahill) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Leaving the 600m UNO FIVE (R. Thompson) was steadied after improving on to the heels of CHIPP’N AWAY (A. Holt).

Near the 200m PRIMARY COLOUR shifted out under pressure and brushed with LIBERTY’S MAGIC.

HEART OF MANY was inclined to lay in when placed under pressure in the home straight.

J. Byrne reported at scale that BOREHOLE was inclined to hang out from leaving the 1000m.

Race 5: COCA-COLA H’CAP - 2120m

Near the 200m ZA MAGIC (A. Butler) shifted out and momentarily became unbalanced.

A post-race veterinary examination of WARRIOR WITHIN (K. Wharton), which finished a distant last, revealed no abnormalities. Trainer B. Hill advised that the horse would be retired.

Stewards sought an explanation from D. Browne with regard to the seemingly disappointing performance of MUKADDAMAH SON. Jockey Browne stated that the horse began well and whilst he was conscious of the fact that the horse has raced poorly when forced to do work in the early stages, he had no other option but to apply pressure to MUKADDAMAH SON in the early stages in order to clear RAEBURN (E. Wilkinson) and take a position one off the fence. D. Browne added that the horse travelled quite well during the middle stages and he was able to improve forward trailing BREAK THE ICE (L. Cassidy) from the 600m, however approaching the 400m he was held up at the heels of that runner, which commenced to weaken, and as a result lost ground when MALING (J. Byrne) took a position to his outside. Jockey Browne further added that despite this MUKADDAMAH SON did not accelerate as expected in the straight and he felt the work the horse had to do in the early stages was a telling factor in the horse’s inability to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination of MUKADDAMAH SON revealed the gelding to have sustained lacerations to the near fore fetlock consistent with being galloped on.

Race 6: CANADIAN CLUB BM85 H’CAP - 1200m

Rounding the 800m turn TOM’S LUCK (J. Byrne) hung out and had to be steadied from the heels of NOOGOORA BURR (A. Spinks).

SEA TRYST (M. Cahill) hung out in the middle stages.

A post-race veterinary examination of NOOGOORA BURR, which finished last, revealed the gelding to have intermittent cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer D. Lawlor was advised that before NOOGOORA BURR is permitted to start again the horse must trial satisfactorily and he must produce veterinary clearance, including the results of an ECG.

Race 7: COKE ZERO H’CAP - 1640m

CUDDLESOME (C. Munce) made heavy contact with the fence when proceeding on to the track. CUDDLESOME was inspected by the veterinary surgeon after arriving at the barriers and was passed suitable to race.

SAM’S TOWN (R. Wiggins) reared at the start and lost ground.

NOISY OCEAN (J. Johnson) was slow to begin.

For a short distance leaving the 1400m EPIC TERRA (T. Harrison) overraced in the position outside the leader.

Near the 500m RACING HEART (A. Holt) was held up on the heels of CONVENT HILL (R. Thompson) for a short distance, shifted out and in doing so inconvenienced SAM’S TOWN. Apprentice Holt was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

C. Munce reported at scale that CUDDLESOME was excitable in the enclosure and during the preliminary and after beginning well raced fiercely in the lead and refused to settle.

Apprentice T. Harrison (EPIC TERRA) was reminded of her obligations regarding raising her arm above shoulder height when using the whip.

When asked to comment on the seemingly improved performance of EQUISSENTIAL, trainer N. Saunders stated that the horse was extremely well placed at the weights today and whilst his instructions were to take up a prominent position in running today, the rider reported to him that the gelding was unable to take up a forward position given the strong early speed in the race and as it eventuated, this enabled EQUISSENTIAL to finish the race off strongly today. The explanation was noted.

Race 8: MOTHER ENERGY QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1350m

Connections advised that OLYMPIC ANTHEM (M. Cahill) would be ridden in a midfield position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.

BODEGA NEGRA (K. Wharton) and VON MOGLICH (R. Thompson) made heavy contact on jumping away.

TORNADO MISS (G. Colless) raced fiercely in the early and middle stages.

AQUATOR (J. Byrne) raced three wide without cover throughout.

TORNADO MISS was held up on the heels of STILL AS (A. Spinks) from entering the straight until the 250m.

Apprentice A. Allen reported that he became concerned with the action of FASTA THAN LIGHT over the concluding stages and as a result did not unduly pressure the horse inside the 100m. A post-race veterinary examination of FASTA THAN LIGHT revealed no abnormalities at time of examination.
