Race 1: Powerade QTIS 2yo H'cap - 1110m

MISHANI TROY, which became fractious and slipped over in the mounting yard, dislodging A. Allen, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

Both ROSIE’S COMMAND (E. Wilkinson) and AIMEE (J. Taylor) began awkwardly.

DIAMOND DRAGON (D. Browne) was slow to begin.

DIAMOND DRAGON raced greenly in the early stages and leaving the 900m raced ungenerously with its head in the air when tightened momentarily by AIMEE, which shifted in slightly. DIAMOND DRAGON continued to raced ungenerously for some distance following this incident.

MISHANI TROY (A. Allen) raced greenly rounding the home turn and became unbalanced.

Soon after straightening, BROADWAY SHOW (C. Munce), which was weakening, was taken in slightly by SARISARA (T. Bell).

When returning to scale, jockey E. Wilkinson was dislodged from ROSIE’S COMMAND. Jockey Wilkinson was examined by the club doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.

Race 2: Canadian Club Benchmark 80 H'cap - 1020m

Connections advised that FUNDIDO, which led last start, would be ridden off the pace if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.

FEELING NAUGHTY (E. Kehoe) was slow to begin.

BUCKMOORE (T. Harrison) was a little slow to begin and was then hampered soon after the start between FUNDIDO (A. Allen) and WHO WILL (G. Goold), which shifted out.

WHO WILL raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

Race 3: Makers Mark Open H'cap – 2120m

Connections advised that from the wide barrier HI SON would be ridden in a rearward position if circumstances permit. HI SON was ridden accordingly.

Leaving the 800m, NOISY OCEAN (J. Johnson) shifted out to a 3-wide position, forcing SECRET GARDEN (T. Bell) wider on the track.

Passing the 500m, HI SON (R. Jamieson) was momentarily tightened for room between PLUMAGE (A. Allen), which shifted out slightly, and SECRET GARDEN, which shifted in under pressure.

Near the 200m, HI SON altered course to the inside of BANG ON (P. Schmidt) in order to improve.

When asked to comment on the performance of PLUMAGE, A. Allen reported that the mare travelled well in the early and middle stages, however when tempo of the race quickened near the 600m the mare was immediately under pressure and was unable to improve into the race, proving disappointing over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination of PLUMAGE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Stewards questioned T. Bell regarding the performance of SECRET GARDEN. Jockey Bell stated he had been unable to muster speed in the early stages and was content with the position at the tail of the field. He added that he attempted to improve leaving the 800m and was able to obtain a position trailing NOISY OCEAN, which he thought would improve into the race and take him into a competitive position rounding the home turn, however SECRET GARDEN was unable to maintain that position and was immediately under pressure and failed to respond to his riding over the concluding stages and could offer no further explanation for the performance.

Race 4: Mount Franklin Lightly Sparkling Class 6 Plate - 1200m

COMMANDARE was declared a late scratching at 1.26 pm due to the upgrade of the track to Good 2.

THE WHITE HOPE was presented to the mounting yard without blinkers, which it had raced in at its most recent start. Stewards interviewed trainer M. Dunn, who advised that he had effected a gear change removing the blinkers on 16 January and had informed media outlets that it was the intention to ride the horse more conservatively today with the removal of the blinkers. After deliberation, stewards agreed to allow the gelding to race without blinkers and media announcements were made to this effect.

Stewards sought an explanation from A. Allen regarding the performance of DREAM’N’IGNITE. He explained that the mare had to do some work in the early stages to cross to the position outside the leader near the 900m. Apprentice Allen added that DREAM’N’IGNITE then travelled comfortably in the middle stages but did not sprint when placed under pressure from the 400m, which he attributed to today’s firm surface. Trainer D. Forster agreed with apprentice Allen that the mare was not suited to racing on today’s firm track. A post race veterinary examination of DREAM’N’IGNITE did not reveal any significant abnormalities.

Trainer M. Dunn advised that THE WHITE HOPE would now be sent for an immediate spell.

Stewards questioned trainer D. Lawlor regarding the improved performance of NOOGOORA BURR. Mr Lawlor explained that he was satisfied with the horse’s most recent start over a shorter distance and felt that the 1200m today would suit the gelding much better. He added that the horse has recently worked well and he has made alterations to the feeding regime of the gelding this campaign. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 5: Coke Zero Open H'cap - 1200m

Connections advised that EXCELLANTES will be ridden in a forward position today. The horse was ridden accordingly.

G. Colless reported that SNITKSY hung out from the 500m.

Approaching the 200m, DE DOZEN STARS (C. Munce) attempted a narrow run to the inside of KEEP IT MOIST (B. El-Issa) and near the 150m was disappointed for that run and was obliged to alter course to the outside of the heels of KEEP IT MOIST. DE DOZEN STARS then was unable to secure clear running over the final 100m.

TOUGH TAIMZ (M. Cahill) was inclined to lay in when placed under pressure and approaching the 100m had to be steadied from the heels of SNITKSY when that runner shifted out.

Jockey. B. El-Issa was questioned regarding the tactics he adopted on KEEP IT MOIST which led today which was in contrast to its most recent start. He explained that his instructions were to ride the horse in a handy position, and as he was caught 3 wide in the early stages he elected to ride forward and assumed to the lead near the 800m. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 6: Bottlemart Benchmark 85 H'cap - 1630m

Correct weight was delayed to allow S. Payne, rider of the 3rd placegetter DANAGAZE, to view the stewards patrol video over the concluding stages to ascertain if he had grounds to lodge a protest against CARMORA being declared 2nd. Subsequently S .Payne declined to lodge a protest.

BINGO ROSE (M. Cahill) was slow to begin.

In the middle stages, PIN (P. Schmidt) overraced and had to be restrained from the heels of CARMORA (C. Munce).

VIKING HEART (G. Colless) also overraced in the middle stages.

At the entrance to the home straight, EQUISSENTIAL (J. Byrne) had to be steadied when tightened for room between TRAKSTAR (R. Wiggins) and CORONER (E. Wilkinson), which after being initially being taken out by PIN (P. Schmidt), shifted out further from that runner. Apprentice Schmidt was advised to show greater care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.

Passing the 300m, CARMORA (C. Munce) shifted out slightly and DANAGAZE (S. Payne), which was following, attempted a narrow run to the inside of that runner. Soon afterwards, CARMORA shifted in slightly, which resulted in DANAGAZE being disappointed for that run and shifting in, making contact with the running rail and becoming unbalanced. S. Payne, rider of DANAGAZE, then attempted to shift to the outside of the heels of CARMORA but was unable to secure clear running as TRAKSTAR (R. Wiggins) had shifted in under pressure and improved to the outside of CAMORA. C. Munce, rider of CARMORA, was advised to ensure he exercises care when shifting ground under pressure in home straight.

A post race veterinary examination of CARMORA revealed some minor lacerations to its head, which may have occurred when it was fractious in the barriers.

Race 7: Coca-Cola Amatil QTIS 3yo H'cap – 1200m

ROJO GRANDE was a late scratching at 2.35 pm due to the upgrading of the track as the horse is not suited racing on firm surfaces.

ANYMORE (C. Munce) and EXCEEDINGLY (T. Bell) were slow to begin.

Approaching the 1000m, SHE’S A DANICA (R. Wiggins) shifted in and bumped ARCHITECT (B. El-Issa). Following this, ARCHITECT commenced to overrace and had to be restrained from the heels of ALQUERO (M. Cahill), which was also overracing when being restrained from the heels of EXCEEDINGLY (T. Bell). ARCHITECT continued to overrace for some distance.

Leaving the 700m, ALQUERO, when racing fiercely at the heels of EXCEEDINGLY (T. Bell), shifted out, inconveniencing SHE’S A DANICA. ANYMORE, which was following, had to be restrained from the heels of SHE’S A DANICA. ALQUERO then shifted in towards the rail and tightened the running of ARCHITECT, which had improved to its inside when overracing.

Rounding the home turn and in the home straight until the 150m, ARCHITECT was unable to secure clear running when awkwardly placed at the heels of CHOOSE A SAGA (E. Wilkinson).

CHOOSE A SAGA and REAL FAVULOUS (K. Matheson) raced 3 wide throughout.

Stewards interviewed trainer D .Lawlor when they had serious concerns with the action of ARCHITECT, particularly approaching the 200m where its galloping action was extravagant when racing between CHOOSE A SAGA and ALQUERO. Stewards will review the racing history of ARCHITECT to make a determination on the matter.

When asked to comment on the performance of ANYMORE, C. Munce reported that after receiving minor interference at the 800m the gelding had difficulty securing clear running in the home straight, and this, in his opinion, had a detrimental effect on the overall performance.

A post race veterinary examination of REAL FAVULOUS revealed it had been galloped on on the near fore lateral canon.

Race 8: Mount Franklin One Metro Win H'cap – 1350m

LADY AGULHAS, which was injured in its float when being transported to the course, was declared a late scratching at 1.05 pm. Connections were advised that veterinary clearance will be required for LADY AGULHAS prior to its next race start.

LITTLE BROWN HORSE was a late scratching at 3.57 pm after being injured in the horse stall area.

M. Vance, rider of TUNAHOG, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that approaching the 900m, she permitted her mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of LOST WORLD, which as a result was taken in across the rightful running of INDUBIOUS (R. Jamieson), which had to be severely checked. As a result of being checked, INDUBIOUS shifted out, resulting in TYPHOON RED (J. Byrne) also having to be checked. M. Vance was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 10 meetings, to commence at midnight, 8 February and to expire at midnight, 23 February.

Rounding the home turn, IMELDAMAY (A. Allen) was held up and unable to improve.

COLLAR (T. Harrison) raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

T. Harrison reported that COLLAR hung out throughout the event.

KILWINNING OPTION (K. Matheson) bled during the event. As this was the second occasion on which the horse has bled, it will now incur a lifetime bar from racing.
