SMOOTH PEBBLES – Held up for clear running over the final stages.

STORMY LEO – Apprentice A. Fancourt reported at scale that her mount was inclined to hang out for a major part of the race. A post race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer D. Scanes was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for the horse prior to its next race start.

Race 2: Sky Thoroughbred Central Maiden H’cap - 1200m

YES TONIGHT - The start of this race was delayed when YES TONIGHT cast its off hind plate during its preliminary and had to be attended to by the farrier behind the gates. Raced wide.  Stewards questioned jockey J. Lloyd regarding his riding of the horse in the early stages and whether he had the opportunity to improve to the inside of ARGIE BARGIE.  J. Lloyd explained that he was instructed to ride the horse in a midfield position with cover and for this reason he did not apply undue pressure in the early stages. He added that he changed his whip to his left hand soon after straightening and the mare was inclined to lay in, which placed him at a disadvantage in riding the horse out in his normal manner.  Jockey Lloyd added that his mount was resuming from a lengthy spell and will take a fitness benefit from the race.

APACHE BOOM – Passing the 800m had to be checked  when tightened for room and made heavy contact with the running rail, and as a consequence lost ground.  Apprentice T. Brooker was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that approaching the first turn she allowed her mount, CLEARWATER to shift in when not clear of FABERGE LASS, which was tightened and taken inwards across the rightful running of APACHE BOOM, which had to be checked.   Apprentice Brooker was suspended from riding in races for a period of 13 days, to commence at midnight, 2 July and to expire at midnight, 15 July.  Again became unbalanced when racing in restricted room near the 750m.

BIA TYCHE – Forced wider at the 700m.  Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

CLEARWATER – Had to be steadied near the 700m to avoid heels.

ZOFAST – A post race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the off foreleg.

Race 3: Mount Franklin  2yo Maiden Plate – 1350m

MILLY MUNCHER – As J. Guthman-Chester  was unable to produce a medical clearance to ride in this race, A. Fancourt was substituted as the rider of this horse. Apprentice Guthman-Chester subsequently examined by the doctor when he arrived on course and was able to  fulfil riding engagements in Races 5 and 7.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by B. Pengelly, rider of the 2nd placegetter, NAKED, against DIOMEDES being declared the winner, alleging interference over the final 100m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol video, it was established that DIOMEDES did shifted out inside the 100m causing minor interference to NAKED.   Stewards, bearing in mind the margin of three-quarters of a length at the finish, were not satisfied that this incident had a material effect on the placings and correct weight was confirmed the Judge’s placings.

MISPRINT – Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight.

NAKED – Passing the 200m shifted out abruptly to obtain clear running and made heavy contact with PORCINI.   B. Pengelly, rider of NAKED, was advised to exercise more care.

Race 6: Gallopers Sports Club Class 2 H'cap – 1660m

PIPELINE – Declared a late scratching at 9.05 am on veterinary advice.

BOCAGE – When questioned regarding the reason he improved around the field in the back straight to settle outside the leader, PRINCE OF TIE,  jockey J. Byrne explained that when the pace slowed approaching the first turn, his mount commenced to overrace at the heels of SNEAKY GLANCE and for this reason he was obliged to shift out to a 3 wide position and rather than race 3 wide for the remainder of the event, he allowed BOCAGE to stride forward to settle outside of PRINCE OF TIE.  Stewards accepted jockey Byrne’s explanation.
