From Doomben 10 March 2018 – Race 4: Stewards questioned trainer B. Currie regarding his failure to advise that HANG had been gelded. Mr Currie explained that HANG has been gelded for all of its starts in its career. Stewards advised Mr Currie that in future he must notify when horses in his care are gelded so it is reflected correctly in publications. Although stewards took no direct action against Mr Curie, he was nonetheless advised to ensure that he notifies when runners in his care are gelded in the future.

GENERAL

As B. Thornton and app. Z. White were indisposed due to injury, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: WWW.BRC.COM.AU MAIDEN PLATE – 2240M

KUIPER – Bumped by another runner at the start. Brushed by another runner passing the 100m. Inclined to lay in under pressure over the final stages.

SCHWARZY – Hampered at the start.

STEPPIN’ OUT – Overraced in the early stages and as a result assumed the lead near the 1300m and was unable to be restrained by its rider for some distance in the middle stages.

THOUGHT PROCESS – Jumped awkwardly, shifted out and bumped another runner.

VICTORY IS MINE – Hampered when tightened for room at the start.

INSTANT’S HONOUR – Had to be checked at the start when tightened for room between runners.

KOA NUNI – Stewards permitted senior rider S. Cormack to replace apprentice B. Thornton on the basis that the horse’s allotted weight was equal to the riding weight of apprentice Thornton and as such the apprentice’s claim was at no stage going to be utilised.

RISEUPSKATING – Began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with another runner, resulting in rider L. Cassidy becoming unbalanced.

Following the running of this event the track was downgraded to HEAVY 8 retrospective.

Race 2: HAMILTON HOTEL QTIS 2YO H'CAP – 1110M

HOT GAMBLER – R. Stewart reported that his mount travelled well until the 500m and when placed under pressure failed to respond and weakened badly over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

OUT FOR JUSTICE – Raced greenly throughout.

I’M ROSIE – Raced three wide without cover throughout.

FIRST CLASS MISS – Jumped awkwardly and lost ground.

Race 3: GALLOPERS SPORTS CLUB F&M MAIDEN H'CAP – 1350M

WAKATA – Held up for clear running approaching and rounding the home turn. J. Lloyd was questioned regarding him restraining WAKATA at the start, which was in contrast to its most recent start. J. Lloyd explained that the horse had the blinkers off today and he was instructed to settle the horse towards the rear of the field as in his view at its last start with the blinkers on it overraced and that affected its ability to finish the race off. Trainer M. Dunn explained that he instructed jockey Lloyd to not be aggressive from the barriers and he had hoped that the horse would be a little worse than midfield with cover. Mr Dunn added that at its previous start, when racing in blinkers, there was no specific intention to ride the horse forward but when the horse began well, jockey Lloyd took the initiative and rode forward, however the horse did not finish the race off. Mr Dunn indicated that if the horse draws favourably in future starts he will instruct the rider to be more forward than today. Stewards accepted his explanation.

FOXARELLI – Began awkwardly.

PATRIOTIC ROSE – Held up for clear running approaching and rounding the home turn.

WENDOUREE RED – Raced three wide without cover throughout and overraced whilst racing wide in the early stages.

SOHO FLYER – Slipped over in the mounting yard, examined by veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. Blundered badly soon after the start, almost dislodging apprentice H. English. In this incident apprentice English lost the use of both of her irons and took some distance to regain them and as a result SOHO FLYER took no competitive part in the race.

Following the running of this race apprentice M. Murphy was examined by the Club doctor and stood down from his remaining engagement. Apprentice Murphy was advised that he must produce a medical clearance prior to riding again.

Race 4: ASCOT GREEN C,G&E MAIDEN H'CAP – 1350M

RIDGWAY – When questioned regarding the horse’s performance, J. Byrne explained that RIDGWAY only travelled fairly and although it raced in restricted room rounding the home turn, the horse did not quicken as he expected, which he felt could be attributed to the horse not being entirely comfortable on the rain-affected track. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

FOXY AFFAIR – Raced three wide without cover throughout.

VELITES – Slow to begin.

TELFORD – As apprentice M. Murphy had been stood down by the Club doctor, apprentice R. Ride was substituted as rider. Raced wide without cover. Apprentice R. Ride reported at scale that her mount hung out for a major part of the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer L. Derecourt reported that she was of the opinion that the tongue tie may have contributed to the horse hanging out today so she will remove that gear and experiment with a tongue control bit at its next start.

Race 5: BLOKES DAY OUT RACEDAY BENCHMARK 75 H'CAP – 1200M

DENARIUS – Stewards questioned apprentice T. Marshall regarding his riding of DENARIUS. Apprentice Marshall explained that he was instructed to settle the horse more forward today than at its most recent start and after beginning well he rode forward to settle outside the leader PATRONIZING and DENARIUS then commenced to overrace and despite his efforts could not be restrained and for this reason led the field by a considerable margin in the middle stages. Stewards accepted his explanation.

BARNSLEY – Raced three wide throughout with cover.

CASCATA ROSSA Raced three wide without cover throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a poor recovery rate and to be showing signs of dehydration.

LOVE YA MRS – Raced three wide without cover throughout.

Race 7: WEDDINGS AT BRC CLASS 3 H'CAP – 1350M

CANBERRA – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be striding short in front. Trainer C. Waller’s representative was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance before it races again.

DELAWAR – M. McGillivray reported that his mount never travelled well and that he had to ride the horse with vigour from the 500m. He added that it did not feel entirely comfortable in its action and for this reason he eased the horse down over the final 250m. A  post-race veterinary examination that the gelding was showing signs of dehydration and had cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer D. Vandyke was advised that the horse must trial satisfactorily and that a veterinary clearance, including the results of an ECG, must be produced prior to the gelding being permitted to race again. Mr Vandyke indicated that the horse would now be sent for a spell.

GREGORY – Slow to begin.

Race 8: SKY THOROUGHBRED CENTRAL BENCHMARK 65 H'CAP – 1650M

A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings other than that the horse had poor post-race recovery.

OMNIA MARKA TAYADA – The veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding returned to the enclosure with blood in its mouth after noting that the horse had made contact with the gate on jumping.
